Fixed-Line UMA Telephone Service Application Note
Here’s the Problem
As the mobile subscriber market reaches saturation, mobile
service providers must increase average revenue per user
(ARPU) to realize revenue growth.
In addition, costly subscriber churn results from competitors
who can offer more complete suites of services.
These situations are driving mobile service providers to deliver more services to their subscribers. However, many new
service opportunities require significant network investment
for risky untested value propositions.
As many as 84 percent of Americans own
a cell phone, according to the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Wireless subscribers have quadrupled
in the past decade and about 80 percent
of people in the U.S. now have mobile
phones, according to CTIA-The Wireless
Association.
Here’s the Solution
With the deployment of Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) technology, mobile
services that are delivered over Radio Access Networks are now delivered over
Generic Access Networks (GAN); primarily IP broadband networks like DSL,
cable, and FTTH.
The Westell UltraVoice UMA Terminal Adapter (TA) with Router enables
mobile service providers to leverage their UMA network to deliver trusted fixedline phone services to the home.
Now service providers can increase the ARPU of mobile phone subscribers by
delivering fixed-line phone service to their homes. Many mobile service providers have deployed UMA networks, leveraging dual-mode handsets, to keep
their subscribers on the line while at home. This same UMA network can be
used to deliver fixed-line service to subscribers’ homes, and to increase their
customer base with fixed-line phone service delivered to new customers.
• Increase subscriber ARPU with xed-line service to the home.
• Reduce churn of mobile phone subscribers with a complete suite of voice
services and a single billing plan.
• Leverage a common mobile core, HSS and subscriber proles for mobile
and fixed lines.
• Use existing broadband networks for backhaul to the core.

Fixed-Line UMA Telephone Service
Application Note
Leverage the mobile core network to deliver fixed-line service over broadband connections to
the home
Here’s How It Works
The UltraVoice UMA TA provides RJ11 connectivity and dialtone for
analog, digital and cordless phones in the home.
The UltraVoice UMA TA interfaces with the UMA Network Controller (UNC) over an IP broadband network (aka Generic Access
Network, or GAN). It establishes secured Access Stratum (AS) connections using IPSec for reliable transport of Non-Access Stratum
(NAS) user- and control-plane traffic. The UltraVoice UMA TA ensures QoS for voice traffic.
The UNC interfaces with the mobile circuit-switched (using A or
IuCS) and packet-switched (using Gb or IuPS) core networks.
The UltraVoice UMA TA interfaces with the Mobile Switching Center (MSC) using GSM Non-Access Stratum signaling to establish
calls on the mobile core network. The UltraVoice UMA TA houses
and reads a SIM card for subscriber identification to the mobile
core.
The mobile core network delivers services to the subscriber’s home
phones over the UMA access network in the same way it delivers services to a mobile handset over the Radio Access Network.
It uses the same Home Subscriber Server (HSS) or Home Location
Registry (HLR) for maintaining subscriber profiles.
The Mobile Switching Center (MSC) manages call control and
transport of voice calls to the PSTN or PLMN.
Here are the Advantages
With the Westell UltraVoice UMA Terminal Adapter (TA) with
Router, phone services based on the mobile core network are made
available to analog and digital cordless phones in the home.
Mobile and fixed phones may now share a common billing plan, subscriber profile, and services.
The Westell UltraVoice UMA TA delivers reliable high-performance voice
services in the home for people using their own existing analog and cordless phones. Using UMA/GAN technology for GSM and UMTS networks,
it assures QoS for voice calls over any broadband network (DSL, cable,
FTTH). The dual-core processor with hardware acceleration for routing
delivers high-performance in a small lightweight form factor.
• Supports one or two voice lines with full-stack UMA and IPSec
• QoS for voice trafc prioritization
• Dual SIM card reader
• High performance dual-core processor and line-rate routing
• Integrated full-featured single-port router with rewall, NAT, DHCP,
DNS
• Ethernet connectivity to any broadband network
• Fast setup and simple GUI, yet highly congurable
• Remote conguration and management
• Lightweight and small footprint
Fixed-Line UMA - 121508
The Westell UltraVoice UMA TA ensures QoS for UMA phone traffic,
along with line-rate routing of other home network traffic, to the
broadband connection.
