Plan Ahead
Read this entire manual before beginning installation. The WeatherBug HD MotionCam
installation can be straightforward and easy to complete if all steps are followed closely.
In order to ensure the most efficient installation possible, you MUST follow the steps
in “Indoor Preliminary Setup” BEFORE installing ANY equipment outdoors.
The most important aspect of preparation is safety. Installation of the HD
MotionCam requires working with cable, drilling through walls or other dense support
structures, standing on ladders, and possibly, walking on roofs. Please carefully read
the following section on “Safety.”
Please pay close attention to the section on “Site Evaluation.” A complete site evaluation
determines proper placement of the camera and will prevent the need to have to re-mount
the camera and re-route the cable.
All additional parts needed (such as ladders, drills, bits, etc.) should be assembled and
inspected before beginning installation. WeatherBug cannot accept responsibility for
damage caused by these tools so all safety precautions should be adhered to. This would
include the use of leather gloves and goggles when appropriate.

Safety!
Only qualified personnel should install the HD MotionCam.
While installation of the HD MotionCam is not particularly difficult, it does usually
require installation near the rooftop and working with wiring, which presents some
amount of risk.
To limit risk to self and property, this manual should be thoroughly read and understood
before beginning installation. Adhere to all warnings on the unit and in the operating
instructions.
Installation must conform to national, state, and local building code requirements with the
most stringent guidelines being adhered to.
The HD MotionCam should only be installed by someone comfortable with being on a
high ladder or rooftop and who is authorized by the site to perform the installation. Roof
and ladder safety is crucial!
Allow only qualified Electricians to make electrical connections. Take all reasonable
safety precautions – double checking a power cable connection could save a life.
Stay as far away from other electrical wiring as possible. Never allow the camera
housing, the cabling, a drill bit, or any other item to contact electrical wires or
conduit. Injury or death could result.
A qualified installer will need to securely mount the unit to a supporting structure capable
of sustaining the weight of the unit (approximately 16 pounds) by using appropriate tools
and hardware. Failure to properly secure the HD MotionCam could result in the unit
separating from the support structure and falling. This would not only damage the
camera, but could injure anyone standing nearby.
If needed, WeatherBug may be able to recommend professional installers and an estimate
of the cost. If this is desired, please call WeatherBug Technical Support at (800) 6244205 or email [email protected].

Site Evaluation
All sites will have certain building restrictions. To get the most out of the camera, a
location needs to be chosen that will present the least restrictions.
The sky, sun, and clouds are important elements in the captured images. A “perfect”
picture includes about 60% sky and about 40% earth.
Remember that the camera will be operating throughout the year. A good view in the late
fall or winter may be obstructed by tree growth in the spring and summer.
Spend time looking at the lighting and shading based on the time of day, types of
weather, and time of year. It is best to center the camera facing toward the prevailing
winds – generallywesterly in the United States. If you invest the time now in site
evaluation, your efforts are sure to pay off in the end.
The camera must also be securely mounted to avoid distortion of the camera images. The
mounting arm must be wall mounted for optimal stabilization. The camera should be
mounted high enough so that there is a clear view of the horizon. The unit should be
mounted so that it is easily accessible. This will aid in any maintenance or adjustments
that may have to be made. Once you have chosen the direction you want the camera to
face, it should be mounted on the outermost wall in that direction. This will keep any
roofs and unnecessary structures out of your camera view.
Select and verify a route to run the cable from the camera to the interior of the building.

Note: The HD MotionCam Ethernet Cable is not UV rated. Cable must
be routed in conduit when running outdoors to protect it. The cable
should be run inside as much as possible. Cable can be run in ceiling
spaces.
HD MotionCam Installation Manual
Routing the Cables
It is best to work with a team of at least two people, as cable will have to be handled from
both the inside and the outside of the building.
Keep in mind the standard HD MotionCam package contains 200 feet of Ethernet cable.
These cables must reach from the camera to the corresponding network connection.
1. With the end of the cable as close as possible to the network and power
connections that will be used, and allowing about eight extra feet, tape the end of
the cables to something sturdy in the area to hold it in place, keeping in mind that
the cables cannot run directly across the floor and will have to be attached to areas
such as the base of walls when the job is complete.
2. Run the cable to the general area that the camera will be mounted outside; fish
tape may be used here to make this step easier.
3. Tape the cable down as close to where the camera will be mounted as possible,
keeping in mind the cable will need to be run through the mounting arm for the
camera.
4. At the outside location where the camera is to be mounted, as close to the camera
as possible, install conduit to cover any outside portion of the cables. Make sure
the cables will reach through the mounting arm to where the camera will be
mounted.

Troubleshooting
Difficulties Acquiring an IP Address
First, make sure the camera is connected to the same subnet as the computer that is being
used to acquire the address. If this is confirmed, but the camera is still not acquiring an
address, the network may not automatically assign DHCP IP Addresses. It may be useful
to connect a network cable directly to the computer being used through a switch to
guarantee the computer can talk to the camera. A Static IP address can be assigned by
going to download.aws.com and downloading the HD MotionCam finder tool and
following the steps in this manual outlined in the section titled, “Setting a Static IP
Address for Your HD MotionCam.”
Power Issues
In cases of malfunction, the most common cause is lack of power to the HD MotionCam.
Be sure to check power supplies and connections to ensure that the HD MotionCam has
the proper power supply and that the components are turned on. When the camera is
powered on, the booting process and movement of camera is audible when standing
directly next to the unit.
Captured Images Not Visible
If the station power has been verified and images are available locally but captured
images are not retrievable through http://weather.weatherbug.com, verify Port 21 TCP for
outbound traffic is open for FTP.
Image is Poor Quality
It is important to make sure not to adjust the factory image settings of the camera in the
Setup portion of the SNC Toolbox. The settings on the camera were deemed optimal
during manufacturing. If adjustment(s) to the image settings are made and decided
unfavorable, please remember the camera will not be handled as defective.
Live Video Not Available
IMPORTANT: Once power is connected to the camera, make sure 2 full minutes have
passed before attempting to access live video from the camera.
If trying to view live video on a computer on the same subnet as the camera, verify the IP
address is correct. The finder tool may need to be reopened to do this if DHCP was used.
If the camera was installed using a static IP address, please verify the correct IP address
is being used by contacting the local network administrator.
EN.PM.UM24 20160211 -26-Page 26 of 29
Page 27
HD MotionCam Installation Manual
If viewing live video from a computer that is not on the same subnet that the camera is
installed upon is desired, verify that Port 80 TCP is open for inbound traffic to the
camera.
In the event that the provided troubleshooting steps have been attempted and the camera
is still inoperable, contact WeatherBug Weather Station Technical Support at (800) 6244205 or email [email protected].
Maintenance
There is little maintenance needed for the HD MotionCam. As long as the camera
housing remains tightly closed and the three rubber plugs are in place, there should rarely
be a need to clean anything inside the camera top enclosure.
The clear dome surrounding the camera may be very loosely wiped with a dry, soft cloth
to remove dust and debris. The dome can then be wiped with the cloth using a very small
amount of water.
DO NOT use volatile solvents such as alcohol, benzene, thinners, or ammonia as they
may damage the surface finishes. DO NOT use abrasive cleaners, cloths, or sponges.
Please keep in mind that most household cleaners (such as Windex, etc.) contain
ammonia.
