INTRODUCTION
This booklet is designe d to cover the total range of Waterco Comman domatic domestic water softeners, purie rs and lters.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Commandomatic domestic units may be divided broadly into t wo types:-
1. Water Filters
a) Sediment F ilters are used to remove suspen ded material from the water. Sediment, mud and algae are ltered out down to the siz e of approximately 10 microns by a lter bed of anthracite , sand and gravel.
b) Carbon Fil ters contain a deep bed of activated carbo n as the lter media.
Carbon is a highly adsor bent material with a very h igh capacity fo r the
removal of tastes/ odours, chlorine and Trihalomethanes.
2. Water Softeners and Purier
a) Water Softener s remove hardness ( Calcium and Magnesium ) fro m water. The hardnes s minerals are trapped by the ion exchange resin bed.
b) Purier So fteners are a co mbination unit. They have both softening a nd purifying resins in t heir resin beds. This unit is well suited to use on water that is modera tely hard and ha s an organic content.

COMMANDOMATIC SEDIMENT FILTER
Each unit comp rises of:
Pressure vessel co ntaining a mixed bed of eith er:
a) An thracite, Sand and Gravel. b) Ac tivated Carbon.
A10 valve, whi ch directs the  ow of water thro ugh the cycle o f backwash and service.
COMMANDOMATIC HOME SOLUTIONS
Refer to the c hart below to  nd the unit that best suits the problem.
1. Based on 1 43mg/L hardness for softeners, Puriers/ Softeners.
2. Water softener satisfactory to 0.3mg/L.
3. Water Purier/ Softener satisfactory to 0. 1ppm.
This char t has been prepared as a guide based on municipal water supplies. These products are not designed for the removal of microorganisms and some may result in th e accumu lation of them in certain circumstances. Therefore, for drinking water, it is important that they are used on microbiologically safe water and that  ushing and maintenanc e protocols are st rictly adhered t o.

How does a Commandomatic Sediment/ Carbon Filter work?
The filte r medi a is h eld wi thin a cyli nder. The lter media sits on top of a gravel
bed and a centre tu be passes through the
media. Normal service ow is down through the lt er bed and back up the centre tub e. During backwashing, the ow is reversed ushing sedime nt out of the  lter bed.

COMMANDOMATIC WATER SOFTENER/ PURIFIER SYSTEMS
Each unit comp rises of:
Pressure vessel co ntaining a bed of cation or cation/ anion exchange resin, which does the softening/ purifying.
Brine tank to store and provides the salt, to make up the sal t brine solution needed for regeneratio n.
A 10 valve, wh ich directs the ow of water th rough the c ycle of regeneration and servi ce.
How does a Com mandomatic wate r Softener/ Purier work?
The water soften ing/ purifying resin is held with in the pressure vessel. The resin sit s on top of a gravel bed and a centre tube passes throu gh the resin to provide up or down ow when required. Nor mal ow is down through the resin bed and ba ck up the centre tube. During salt regeneration, the ow is reversed.
Salt is stored in the brine tank. A oat allows a set amount of water in to the brine tank. This water dissol ves enough salt to regenerat e the water softener/ puri er. The brine solution is then tra nsferred into the resin cylind er.
This is achieved by means of an injection sy stem, which draws t he brine solution up, and passes it through the
resin bed and ou t to the drain.
