The Touran 2016 is an all-new development and is being built using the modular transverse matrix for the first
s548_001
time. It combines innovative technology with an optimum use of space. In addition to the new design, the construction and functional advantages of the MQB can be seen in the individual assembly groups for the Touran.
The increase in the exterior length mainly results from the longer wheelbase. This has created more space in the interior and the largest luggage compartment volume among the five- and seven-seaters in this class. All individual seats on the second and third seat rows and the front passenger seat can be folded down to create an extensive cargo area.
The innovative technology includes, for example, the infotainment systems from the modular infotainment matrix (MIB) along with the App Connect function.
Lightweight technology in the powertrain and body assembly groups has allowed us to reduce the weight by up to 62 kg compared with the previous model. The lower weight and improved aerodynamics have decreased the fuel consumption of the TSI and TDI engines by up to 19%.
The established driver assist systems and also the trailer manoeuvring system, which is being used for the first time in an MPV, provide more safety and convenience. A Climatronic system with three temperature zones and up to 47 stowage possibilities complete the new convenience features in the Touran 2016.
You will find more information on the technology in the new Touran in this and other Self-study Programmes.
This Self-study Programme describes the design and function of newly developed features. The contents will not be updated.
For current testing, adjustment and repair instructions, refer to the relevant service literature.

Seating design
s548_055 s548_053
The seat system is a new development. It consists of five individual seats for the first and second seat rows and a further two optional individual seats that form a third seat row. The backrests for the second and third seat rows and the front passenger seat can be folded down individually or all at the same time. They then create an extensive cargo area. Thanks to the longer wheelbase, you can adjust the longitudinal position of the three individual seats in the second seat row by up to 200 mm.
5-seater
The features of the second seat row:
Three individual seats
Backrest tilt can be adjusted to three positions
Integrated armrest on centre seat, optional
Seat heating, optional
ISOFIX attachment points
Top tether anchoring points
Seat belt reminder system

Body

Body structure

The body has been completely redesigned. It is based on the modular transverse matrix platform. Compared with the Golf, the vehicle floor has been raised 31 mm inside the body. This enables a higher seat position. The Touran has a 110mm longer wheelbase than the Golf SV. This has been achieved by making the rear cross member 110 mm longer. Modern manufacturing techniques like laser welding, soldering and spot welding along with clinching and riveting are used. An increased usage of press-hardened steel sheets and hot-formed steels guarantees a high level of crash safety combined with a low body weight.
Strengths of steel sheets
< 160 MPa soft steel
< 220 MPa high-strength steel
< 420MPa higher-strength steel
< 1,000MPa ultra-high-strength steel
> 1,000MPa ultra-high-strength hot-formed steel

Body assembly

Equipment

The Touran 2016 is more spacious thanks to its longer wheelbase. The fold-flat seat system allows the backrests on the second and third seat rows to be folded down simply with a strap and the complete seats to be lowered flush with the luggage compartment floor. The illustration shows the equipment features of the Touran. They may vary according to country and equipment level.
Frameless interior mirror
Windscreen heater with heating wires
Panoramic sliding/tilting sunroof, electrically operated with indirect lighting
High-gloss package, chrome strips all round the side windows
Fold-flat seat system in rear

Allergen filter
Climate control versions
The Touran 2016 uses air conditioning components from the modular transverse matrix. A manually/electrically controlled air conditioning system is offered as basic equipment. It appeared in the Golf model year 2013 and has been adapted for the Touran.
A Climatronic system with a third climate zone in the rear is available for the first time in the Touran. The three-zone Climatronic system allows the driver and front passenger as well as the rear passengers to independently set their own preferred temperature between 16°C and 29.5°C. Regulation is fully automatic. The three climate zones are supplied by a heater and air conditioning unit fitted in the front.
Pure Air three-zone Climatronic
A polyphenol coating has been added to the dust and pollen filter with activated charcoal. This coating is a natural product that has anti-inflammatory properties and occurs in many plants. It absorbs allergens and renders them
harmless. The yellow-coloured coating makes the filter easy to distinguish from conventional dust and pollen filters. An air quality sensor G238 located in the plenum chamber detects pollutants in the ambient air. The air conditioner compressor is activated and the air conditioning system switches to air recirculation mode according to the level of pollution in the ambient air.

Headlights
Three different versions of the headlight are available for the Touran 2016 based on the MQB:
Halogen headlights
“Basic” LED headlights
“Mid” LED headlights with Dynamic Light Assist
Halogen headlights
Technical features
The Touran features a warning lamp monitoring function for all conventional versions of the headlights. It uses the dash panel insert and the “Vehicle” menu in the infotainment system to inform the driver about any defective bulbs. The halogen headlights are equipped with manual headlight range control, which can be adjusted using a potentiometer on the rotary light switch.

The LED lamps are distinguished by an increased light intensity, a pleasant light spectrum and low power consumption.
Technical features
Like a halogen headlight, the “Basic” LED headlight uses reflector technology. The LED lamps project their light onto a reflector that distributes it over the road in accordance with legal requirements. The daytime running light and the side light functions are fulfilled by two LEDs in the upper part of the reflectors. The LED light is dimmed for the side light function. The “Basic” headlight features dynamic headlight range control.

“Mid” LED headlights
The “Mid” LED headlight is another headlight from the MQB. In addition to the conventional lights, it also has the following functions:
Dynamic cornering light (AFS)
Dynamic main beam control in conjunction with Dynamic Light Assist
Technical features
The LED unit for the dipped beam and the main beam uses the LED lens technology. The LEDs project their light through a lens. The “Mid” headlight has an LED unit for an additional main beam using reflector technology. The seven LEDs in the dipped and main beam unit are used for the dipped beam function. When you switch on the main beam headlights, the four LEDs in the dipped and main beam unit and the multi-chip LED in the additional main beam unit are also activated. If the dynamic main beam assist is activated and, for example, an oncoming vehicle is detected, the LED in the additional main beam unit will be switched off. The 11 LEDs in the dipped and main beam unit will remain switched on. The dipped and main beam unit is swivelled horizontally and vertically to avoid dazzling vehicles in front and oncoming traffic. The “Mid” headlight features dynamic headlight range control.

Reversing camera R189
The Touran 2016 features a reversing camera to help the driver assess the area behind the vehicle when parking and manoeuvring. It provides a video image of the current situation behind the vehicle. The camera is based on the MQB reversing camera used in the Passat 2015. It is located next to the button for opening the rear lid and is thus exposed to the environmental conditions. For this reason, the camera is equipped with a washer jet.
The image processing control unit is also integrated into the camera housing. The control unit electronics system for the reversing camera participates in the infotainment CAN bus. It has the task of rectifying the distorted video image and displaying static and dynamic orientation lines depending on the view mode.
If the vehicle is equipped with Trailer Assist, it will have a different version of the reversing camera, which has more comprehensive software.
Activating the washer jet
If the reversing camera is renewed or repaired, it will need to be calibrated. Please refer to the current workshop manual for information on this.

Voice enhancer

The voice enhancer is a unidirectional communication system inside the vehicle. It helps the driver and the front passenger communicate better with the rear passengers at speeds above 100 km/h. The system uses a calculation algorithm to amplify the level of the voices according to the level of the exterior noises. The system is a software module in the control unit 1 for information electronics J794 and uses the microphone for the hands-free system and the rear loudspeakers of the infotainment system as hardware. The sound in the front area of the interior is picked up by the microphone and amplified via the rear loudspeakers. The amplification factor can be adjusted to your individual needs via the infotainment system.

Personalisation allows the different users of a vehicle to immediately access their personal settings without having to repeatedly change the respective vehicle settings.
The active user is identified via the ignition key. When the vehicle is unlocked, the driver is identified and a user account that is assigned to the remote control key is activated. In addition, you can select the user account while the welcome screen is displayed in the dash panel insert.
You can change the user in the infotainment system or modify the user settings at any time when the ignition is switched on. Changes to the settings, e.g. for the driver assistance systems, are saved in the respective active user account.

Media interfaces

The Touran 2016 can be equipped with various media interfaces:
USB and AUX-IN socket in the unit panel (Composition Touch/Colour)
USB and AUX-IN socket in the storage compartment in front of the selector lever
USB socket in the rear
The USB sockets in the storage compartment and in the unit panel can be ordered with Apple compatibility. You then do not require a special adapter cable as the Apple authentication chip is integrated into the USB connection. The original telephone adapter cable can be used to connect devices.
USB and AUX-IN sockets in the unit panel
On the Composition Touch and Composition Colour, the AUX-IN socket has been integrated into the radio unit. The USB socket is in the storage compartment.
USB and AUX-IN sockets in the storage compartment
If the control unit 1 for information electronics J794 is installed with the Composition Media and above, the USB and AUX-IN sockets can be found in the storage compartment in front of the selector lever.

Android Auto
Android Auto is a standard that is developed and managed by Google. It allows you to connect a smartphone to the infotainment system. You can then control the smartphone via the vehicle touchscreen. The interactive “Google Now” user interface is displayed on the infotainment system with Android Auto. In this way, various information is displayed on the start screen depending on how the user has configured the smartphone and on the location services they have enabled. The following information is displayed:
Weather
•Navigation
Missed calls
When an Android Auto connection is active, the smartphone is in standby mode and can only be operated via the infotainment system. The vehicle needs to be stationary when you set up the connection for the first time because you will have to confirm several system messages. A Bluetooth connection for the hands-free function is automatically set up while the cable is connected.
Requirements
Android smartphone with Android operating system 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher
Vehicle and smartphone connected via a USB data cable.

Apple CarPlay
Apple CarPlay is a standard defined by Apple that allows you to connect an iPhone to the infotainment system. Once connected, the iPhone can be operated via the infotainment system touchscreen and still also be used normally. Apps that are started via the infotainment system are run visibly on the smartphone. Displayed apps are:
Telephone
•Music
•Maps
Messages
The connection is made via an iPhone-specific USB data and charging cable that you connect to the iPhone and a USB socket located in the vehicle. Apple CarPlay will start automatically if the “Siri” voice-recognition software is activated in the iPhone preferences. Any existing Bluetooth connections between the iPhone and vehicle, for example, HFP, are disconnected. All of the data and the speech for the hands-free function are transferred via the data cable.

MirrorLink
MirrorLink is a cross-operating system standard that enables smartphone content to be displayed on the infotainment system screen. This standard was developed by the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC), which is made up of several vehicle, smartphone and infotainment system manufacturers. Only smartphones with the Android operating system currently support the MirrorLink standard. MirrorLink allows apps, which have been approved by the CCC, to be displayed while you are driving.
The infotainment system and smartphone are connected via a USB data cable. Only image and music data are transferred via the data cable. You also need to pair the smartphone via Bluetooth in order to use the hands-free function in the vehicle. The smartphone needs to be connected to the Internet for MirrorLink to work. This is the only way to download the certificates that are required to display the app while you are driving.
Requirements
MirrorLink-capable smartphone (currently only available for the Android operating system)
Connection via USB data cable
The app needs to have been approved by the CCC.
Design
Key
1 Disconnect the MirrorLink connection
2 Close active apps
3 Activate mirroring
4 Setup menu for infotainment system

Cam Connect
s548_091
Cam Connect allows users to display the picture from a “GoPro Hero camera” on the infotainment system screen.
Requirements
GoPro Hero3, Hero3+ or Hero4
MirrorLink-capable smartphone
DiscoverPro or DiscoverMedia
App Connect
Set-up
In order to use Cam Connect, the “GoPro Hero camera” needs to be connected to a smartphone via WLAN. The Cam Connect app, which you can download from Google Play, needs to be installed on the telephone. The video signal from the GoPro is sent to the smartphone via this network and the app processes the signal and shows it on the display. A MirrorLink connection needs to be set up between the smartphone and the infotainment system to display the picture on the infotainment system. The Cam Connect app is MirrorLink-certified. When the vehicle is stationary, it allows you to open live video streams and, while you are driving, to open still images that can be updated every five seconds.

(Secure Digital card) Small and robust memory cards, e.g. for digital cameras.
Side Assist
(Lane change assist) Driver assist system that supports the driver when overtaking and changing lanes.
SSD
(Solid State Drive) Storage medium without moving mechanical parts.
Subwoofer
(Term for bass loudspeaker) Subwoofers are special loudspeakers that reproduce very low-frequency bass sounds. A distinction is made between active and passive subwoofers. Active subwoofers have their own power amplifiers; passive subwoofers do not have their own power amplifiers and are connected to an amplifier output like a normal loudspeaker.
TFT
(Thin Film Transistor) Abbreviation for a flat screen with a transistor display matrix.
TPMS
(Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) Assist system that informs the driver about the current tyre pressures. It is a directly measuring system. If the tyre inflation pressure is too low or there is a rapid pressure loss, the driver is warned by optical and/or acoustic signals.
TPLI
(Tyre Pressure Loss Indicator) Driver assist system that alerts the driver if the tyre pressure at any of the four wheels deviates from the set target pressures.
Top tether system
The top tether system is used for additional child seat anchoring on the rear seat bench.

Traffic Alert
When reversing out of a perpendicular parking space, this system warns the driver about moving objects in the area behind the vehicle.
Traffic Jam Assist
When equipped with Traffic Jam Assist, the car can react to the vehicle in front in congestion. The car brakes, accelerates and steers semi-automatically and thus increases driving comfort in stop-and-go traffic.
Trailer Assist
This trailer manoeuvring system simplifies reversing manoeuvres with a trailer. The system takes over the steering once you enter the direction and the turning angle. The vehicle and the trailer are steered precisely while the driver only has to operate the accelerator and brakes.
USB
(Universal Serial Bus) A standardised interface between various electronic devices such as computers, printers, scanners, televisions etc.
