The Polo 2015 – a new generation
S533_002
At first glance, the new Polo doesn’t appear to have changed much. Visually, the front and rear sections have been redesigned in detail. If you take a second look, the newest generation of the Polo has been comprehensively redeveloped and in terms
technical components, is now oriented towards the “modular transverse matrix” concept.
of
The drives have been completely redesigned and all engines meet the EU6 emission standard. New three-cylinder tu
rbo diesel engines with varying performance levels as well as the new petrol engine in conjunction with dual
clutch gearboxes reduce consumption by up to 21 per cent.
Several convenience and safety technologies which were introduced with the Golf 2013 can be found in the new
olo too. The multicollision brake is now also included as standard. The driver assist systems, such as the Driver
P
ert System, the Front Assist area monitoring system with City Emergency Brake and the adaptive cruise control
Al are optional features.
The second generation modular infotainment module (MIB) w system is state-of-the-art.
New electromechanical power steering improves braking properties and for the first time, features an optional “S
port Select” running gear. Electronically switchable dampers can be controlled at the touch of a button.
You will find more information on both the technology and the CrossPolo and Polo BlueGT models in the rest of this Sel
f-study Programme.
ith its specially adapted radio and radio navigation
The Self-study Programme shows the design and function of
developments.

Body

Air humidity, rain and light sensor G823
S533_075

The vehicle body

The body structure is exactly the same as that of the Polo 2010. Only the roof of the new Polo has been changed. Due to a new aerial design, the roof aerial connection has been redesigned.

The roof

The roof has a newly designed hole for the new short rod aerial. The hole is now diamond-shaped.

The interior mirror

For the first time, the Polo 2015 has an interior mirror which not only has the combined rain and light sensor but also a humidity detection sensor.
The new combined sensor has the following functions:
Further information on the body structure can be found in the Self-study Programme no. 444, “The Polo 2010”.
Rain sensor – for automatic windscreen wiper contr
ol
Light sensor – for automatic light switching
Humidity sensor – for automatic anti-mist control on the inside of the windscreen
The humidity sensor detects the level of humidity on
ner side of the windscreen and provides the air
the in conditioning system with this information. Anticondensation measures are then introduced via the air conditioning system, and for vehicles with the start/stop system the engine is prevented from being automatically switched off.

“Sport Select” running gear

The Polo 2015 can be optionally equipped with the “Sport Select” running gear. The driver can then select their preferred setting from the two damper modes, “Sport” and “Normal”, at the touch of a button.
The benefit to the customer is that this sporty vehicle becomes more comfortable at the touch of a button.
Key
4 dampers with switch valve
Display in dash panel insert
The “Sport Select” running gear contains four dampers with integrated switch valves, a control unit and a button.
The damper with switch valve has two characteristic curves in the compression and rebound stages, respectively. The valve is a two-level solenoid valve.
The driver can switch the damper characteristic curves according to preference via the button on the control unit and from there to the solenoid valves.

Switch valve function
The images show the oil flow and current flow of the valve.
There is a hollow-bored piston rod in the damper, which has a solenoid and a switch valve built into the lower half. The switch valve is made up of the rotary slide, the normal valve and the sport valve. If the button is pressed and the valve is subject to a voltage, the flow direction of the hydraulic oil changes.
In sport mode, the coil is not supplied with a current (0 A). The spring therefore pushes the rotary slide onto the normal valve. The upper boreholes are closed and the oil only flows through the sport valve.
In normal mode, the coil is supplied with a current (0.5 A) slide by 0.4 mm. This causes the upper annular gap to open and the hydraulic oil flows through the normal valve.

Characteristic curve comparison

The characteristic curves of the switchable damper differ from those of the standard damper in that the rebound
compression stages each have 2 characteristic curves. The rebound and compression stages in the standard

Heating and air conditioning

S533_079
S533_080

The different climate control versions

Heating and ventilation system
The adjustment of the temperature flap and the air flaps is transferred from the operating unit to the flap mechanism on the heater unit via flexible bearings. The air recirculation flap is controlled via the button for air recirculation. This is operated with a control motor. The feedback LED shows whether the air recirculation flap is open.
Manual air conditioning system
In the manual air conditioning system, adjustment of the temperature and air flaps is mechanical. Adjustment takes place using flexible bearings. The desired temperature must also be manually adjusted, if necessary. Adjustment of the air recirculation flap is done using a control motor.
Climatronic
All functions are controlled automatically in the Climatronic. The entire vehicle interior represents a climate zone. The air, air recirculation and temperature flaps are
justed via control motors.

Further information on heating and air conditioning systems in the Polo can be found in the Self-study Programme no. 263 “Polo Model Year 2002” and no. 444 “The Polo 2010”.

Camera installation position
The reversing camera has been installed in the Polo for the first time. It is in the rear bumper above the number plate and produces a live video image from the area behind the vehicle.
Video image on the infotainment display
When terminal 15 is actuated and the reverse gear is engaged, the camera’s video signal is relayed to the control unit 1 for information electronics J794 or to radio R. The control unit 1 for information electronics J794 or
radio R display the live video image. The static
the guiding lines which are overlaid onto the image of the surroundings come from radio R or control unit J794 and help to make estimating distances easier. The camera does not need calibration.
Further information can be found in the Self-study Programme no. 407, “Reversing Camera System”.
The reversing camera can be combined with the following radio navigation systems: Composition Colour, Composition Media and Discover Media.
