This manual has all the feature operations and troubleshooting necessary to install and operate your new VTech product. Please review this manual thoroughly to ensure proper installation and operation of this innovative and feature rich VTech product.

Product introduction
BM5000 is a baby monitor which consists of one baby unit
(BM5000 BU), one parent unit (BM5000 PU).
The parent unit may be shipped with protective stickers covering the displays. Remove the protective sticker before use.

Important safety instructions
When using your equipment, basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock and injury, including the following:
Follow all warnings and instructions marked on the product. Adult setup is required. This product is intended as an aid. It is not a substitute for
responsible and proper adult supervision and should not be used as such.
This product is not intended for use as a medical monitor. Do not use this product near water. For example, do not use
it next to a bath tub, wash bowl, kitchen sink, laundry tub or swimming pool, or in a wet basement or shower.
CAUTION: Use only the batteries indicated in this manual. There may be a risk of explosion if a wrong type of battery is used for the parent unit. Use only the supplied rechargeable battery or replacement battery pack for the parent unit. Do not dispose of batteries in a fire. They may explode.
Use only the adapters included with this product. Incorrect adapter polarity or voltage can seriously damage the product. Baby unit power adapter: Input 100-240V AC 150mA 60Hz; Output: 6V DC 600mA; Parent unit power adapter: Input 100-240V AC 150mA 60Hz; Output: 6V DC 400mA.
The power adapters are intended to be correctly oriented in a vertical or floor mount position. The prongs are not designed to hold the plug in place if it is plugged into a ceiling, under-the-table or cabinet outlet.
For pluggable equipment, the socket-outlet shall be installed near the equipment and shall be easily accessible.
Unplug this product from the wall outlet before cleaning. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners. Use a damp cloth for cleaning.
Unplug the power cords before replacing batteries. Do not cut off the power adapters to replace them with other
plugs, as this causes a hazardous situation. Do not allow anything to rest on the power cords. Do not install
this product where the cords may be walked on or crimped.

This product should be operated only from the type of power source indicated on the marking label. If you are not sure of the type of power supply in your home, consult your dealer or local power company.
Do not overload wall outlets or use an extension cord. Do not place this product on an unstable table, shelf, stand or
other unstable surfaces. This product should not be placed in any area where proper
ventilation is not provided. Slots and openings in the back or bottom of this product are provided for ventilation. To protect them from overheating, these openings must not be blocked by placing the product on a soft surface such as a bed, sofa or rug. This product should never be placed near or over a radiator or heat register.
Never push objects of any kind into this product through the slots because they may touch dangerous voltage points or create a short circuit. Never spill liquid of any kind on the product.
To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not disassemble this product, but take it to an authorized service facility. Opening or removing parts of the product other than specified access doors may expose you to dangerous voltages or other risks. Incorrect reassembling can cause electric shock when the product is subsequently used.
You should test the sound reception every time you turn on the units or move one of the components.
Periodically examine all components for damage. Be aware of possible loss of privacy while using public airwaves.
Conversations may be picked up by other nursery monitors, cordless phones, scanners, etc.
Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the product.
The product is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety.

Cautions
Use and store the product at a temperature between 0oC and 40oC.
Do not expose the product to extreme cold, heat or direct sunlight. Do not put the product close to a heating source.
Batteries should not be exposed to excessive heat such as bright sunshine or fire.
Make sure the baby unit(s) and the adapter cord(s) are always out of reach of the baby, at least 1 metre away from the baby or crib, to avoid a possible strangulation hazard.
Never place the baby unit(s) inside the baby’s crib or playpen. Never cover the baby unit(s) or parent unit with anything such as a towel or a blanket.
Other electronic products may cause interference with your baby monitor. Try installing your baby monitor as far away from these electronic devices as possible: wireless routers, radios, cellular telephones, intercoms, room monitors, televisions, personal computers, kitchen appliances and cordless telephones.
Do not attach the wire-free sensors to a baby’s cot or playpen. Ensure the wire-free sensors are installed out of the reach of children.

Parent unit battery installation
You can power up the parent unit by connecting it to AC power or to the rechargeable battery provided. Even if the parent unit is connected to AC power, we recommend you also install the battery. This guarantees continual operation in case of a power outage.
Install the battery as shown below.
To replace the battery, unplug the battery connector from the socket, and then pull the battery out of the battery compartment. Follow the steps above to install the battery.
The operating time for using the rechargeable battery is short. If you want to monitor your baby for a long time, we recommend you connect the parent unit to AC power.
If the parent unit will not be used for a long time, disconnect and remove the battery to prevent possible leakage.
Use only the battery supplied with this product.

Baby unit and parent unit installation
You can power up the baby unit by connecting it to AC power.
Install the baby unit as shown below.
Bundle the power adapter cord neatly with a twist tie. The baby unit turns on when it is powered up.

Use only the parent unit power adapter and the baby unit power adapters supplied with this product. To order a replacement, contact VTech on 1 300 369 193.
The parent unit power adapter and baby unit power adapter are intended to be correctly oriented in a vertical or floor mount position. The prongs are not designed to hold the plug in place if it is plugged into a ceiling, under­the-table or cabinet outlet.
Make sure the parent unit, the baby unit and the power adapter cord are out of reach of children.

Getting started
Parent unit battery charging
Once you have connected the parent unit and installed its battery, it powers on automatically. The battery icon indicates the battery status (see the following table).
The parent unit battery is fully charged after 11 hours of continuous charging.
It takes longer to charge the battery when the parent unit is turned on. To shorten the charging time, turn the parent unit off while charging.
The standby time varies depending on the sensitivity level you set, your actual use and the age of the battery.

The visual sound indicator has two functions. One is to show the sound level detected by the baby unit. The other one is to show the volume level during speaker volume setting.
Sound level detected by the baby unit
One to three green lights indicate a moderate sound level detected by the baby unit.
Additional red lights indicate a higher sound level detected by the baby unit (e.g. baby crying loudly).
Speaker volume level
One to three green lights indicate Level 1 to Level 3 of the speaker volume setting.
Additional red lights indicate Level 4 to Level 5 of the speaker volume setting.

Positioning the baby monitor
This baby monitor is intended as an aid. It is not a substitute for proper adult supervision, and should not be used as such.
CAUTION
Keep the baby unit out of the reach of the baby. Never place or mount the baby unit inside the baby’s cot or playpen.
Place the baby unit at least 1 metre away from your baby.
If you experience audio feedback on either the parent unit or baby unit, move the parent unit further away until there is no
more audio feedback.
Place the parent unit at least 2 metres away from the baby unit.
You can increase the speaker volume of the parent unit if you cannot hear the sounds transmitted from the baby unit.
3. Press on the baby unit to turn on the projector. It projects some colorful images to the environment. Adjust the angle of the baby unit so that the images are clearly projected to the ceiling or a wall.

Operating range
The operating range of the baby monitor is up to 300 metres outdoors or 50 metres indoors. The actual operating range may vary depending on the environmental conditions, and other interferences such as walls, doors, and other obstructions.
Test your baby monitor before use
You may test the baby monitor before initial use, and at regular times thereafter.
To test your baby monitor:
1. Place the parent unit and the baby unit in the same room to test the product. Make sure the baby unit is at least 2 metres away from the parent unit.
2. Press power on button to power on the baby unit.
3. Upon initial use, press to power on the parent unit.
If both units are not connected, the parent unit displays
NO LINK TO BABY UNIT OR SENSORS on the screen. The
LINK light first flashes and then turns off. Move the parent unit closer to the baby unit.

Power on or off the baby unit
Press power on to power on the baby unit. The power on
lights up.
Press and hold power on again to power off the baby unit. The power on turns off.
Power on or off the parent unit
Press to power on the parent unit. The screen turns on. Press and hold again to power off the parent unit. The
screen turns off.
The parent unit powers on automatically once it is connected to AC power or battery installed. The baby unit also powers on automatically once connected to AC power.
The parent unit takes approximately 10 seconds to link to baby unit when turned on. This includes reloading date and time information.
Adjust the speaker volume for baby unit
Press volume + or volume - on the baby unit at any time.
Adjust the speaker volume for parent unit
You can adjust the speaker volume from VOLUME 1 to VOLUME 5, or turn it off.
Press or when the parent unit is not in use.
When the speaker volume is set to off, the screen displays .

Adjust the sound sensitivity of the baby unit
You can choose to hear sounds from the baby unit all the time, or to hear sounds that exceed a certain level. You can use the parent unit to adjust the microphone sensitivity of your baby unit. The higher the sensitivity level, the more sensitive the baby unit is in detecting sounds for transmitting to the parent unit.

The parent unit speaker is constantly on, and you will hear all sounds (including background noises) from your baby’s room.
High sensitivity level
The parent unit speaker turns on for soft babbling and louder sounds from your baby. It remains quiet when your baby sleeps soundly.
Medium sensitivity level
The parent unit speaker turns on for loud babbling and louder sounds from your baby. It remains quiet when your baby makes soft sounds.
Low sensitivity level
The parent unit speaker turns on for crying and louder sounds from your baby. It remains quiet when your baby makes soft sounds.
Lowest sensitivity level
The parent unit speaker turns on for loud crying or screeching sounds from your baby. It remains quiet when your baby makes soft sounds.

To enter the sensitivity menu of the parent unit, the baby unit must be turned on.
Set date and time
You can set the date and time so that the alerts will be logged in the sensor log with correct time stamps.
Press menu when the parent unit is not in use. Press or to choose Set date/time, then press select.
Press or to choose the day, then press select.
Press or to choose the month, then press select.
Press or to choose the year, then press select.
Press or to choose the hour, then press select.

Sound alert
Sound alert feature works only when the parent unit is in mute. If you turn on the sound alert, the parent unit beeps when the
baby unit detects loud sounds which light up four sound level indicators on the parent unit.
When the sound alert of the parent unit is turned on,
displays. The sound alert is preset to Off.
Press menu when the parent unit is not in use. Press or to choose Sound alert, then press select. Press or to choose On or Off. Press select to confirm your selection. The screen
displays Saved and you hear a confirmation tone.
Vibration alert
If you turn on the vibration alert, the parent unit will vibrate when the baby unit detects loud sounds which light up four sound level indicators on the parent unit.
When the vibration alert of the parent unit is turned on,
displays. The vibration alert is preset to Off.
Press menu when the parent unit is not in use. Press or to choose Vibration alert then press
select. Press or to choose On or Off. Press select to confirm your selection. The screen
displays Saved and you hear a confirmation tone.
Each time you set the vibration alert to ON, the parent unit vibrates briefly after you press select.
We recommend not to turn on the vibration alert and the lullaby at the same time, as the lullaby will trigger the vibration alert frequently.

Temperature
Your baby unit measures the surrounding temperature. If the detected temperature goes above a desired temperature range, the parent unit screen will display TOO HOT. If the detected temperature goes below a desired temperature range, the parent unit screen will display TOO COLD.
You can change the settings for the temperature range and format.
Set the temperature range
You can set the desired minimum and maximum room temperature of the baby unit, so that the parent unit will alert you when the temperature is too high or too low.
Press menu when the parent unit is not in use. Press or to choose Temperature, then press
select. Press select to select Range. Press or to adjust the minimum temperature
between 55 F and 59 F (11 C and 20 C), then press select.
Press or to adjust the maximum temperature between 83 F and 86 F (21 C and 30 C), then press select.
Press select to confirm your selection. The screen displays Saved and you hear a confirmation tone.

You can set the temperature format to Celsius or Fahrenheit.
Press menu when the parent unit is not in use. Press or to choose Temperature, then press select. Press or to choose Format, then press select. Press or to choose Celsius or Fahrenheit. Press select to confirm your selection. The screen
displays Saved and you hear a confirmation tone.

Projector and lullaby
You can turn on the projector and lullaby on the baby unit. The baby unit projects colorful images to the environment, and plays the lullaby to comfort your baby.
When the projector is turned on, or displays on the parent unit screen. The baby unit will play lullaby.
On the baby unit:
Press once to turn on the projector and play lullaby. The interesting and colorful images is projected at the same time.
Press again to stop playing the lullaby. The baby unit keeps projecting the colorful images.
Press again to stop projecting the colorful images. The baby unit play the lullaby again.
Press for a fourth time to turn off the projector. The interesting and colorful images fade out.
On the parent unit:
Press menu when the parent unit is not in use. Press or to choose Nightshow, then press select to
enter the sensor settings menu. Press or to choose Nightshow (to turn on projector
and play lullaby), Projector (to turn on projector only), Melodies (to play lullaby only) or Off (to turn off both projector and lullaby).
Press select to confirm the setting
The projector and lullaby will automatically turn off after 15 minutes.
We recommend not to turn on the vibration alert and the lullaby at the same time, as the lullaby will trigger the vibration alert frequently.
If the baby unit receives talkback from the parent unit during lullaby playback, the lullaby will be paused. It resumes after the talkback finishes.

Talk to the baby unit
You can broadcast messages from a parent unit to the baby unit and the other parent unit. If you have two parent units, you can use both of them at the same time to talk to the baby unit.
Press and hold talk on the side of the parent unit. The screen displays TALK when the voice connection to the baby unit is made. Speak towards the mic on the parent unit. Your voice is broadcast to the baby unit and the other parent unit.
If the speaker volume of the parent unit is set to VOLUME OFF, it will be reset to the default volume when you press and hold TALK.
Find/page the parent unit
Use this feature to find misplaced parent unit.
Press page on the baby unit. The idle parent unit rings and displays PAGING.
To end paging, press any key on the parent unit, or press page on the baby unit.
Paging rings the parent unit even if the speaker volume of parent unit is set to VOLUME OFF.
The baby unit cannot page any parent unit that is turned off, out of range or talking to the baby unit.

Adding sensors
You can add Contact Sensors (VS001), or Motion Sensors (VS002) to your baby monitor. All sensors are sold separately.
Press menu when the parent unit is not in use. Press or to choose Sensor settings, then press
select to enter the sensor settings menu. Press or to choose Add sensor, then press select.
The screen displays Place your sensor next to Baby Unit. Press SELECT.
Press select. The screen displays Enter sensor pairing mode. For help refer to manual.
To enter the registration mode, press and hold the pair button on the Contact Sensor, or use a narrow pointed object such as a pencil to press and hold the PAIRING button on the Motion Sensor, until the LED light flashes green.
The LED light on the sensor flashes. The parent unit screen displays Registering…Please wait, and then Registered when the registration process completes. This process takes about 90 seconds to complete.
Your BM5000 can pair up to 20 sensors simultaneously.

Sensor alerts
You can manually turn on or off the sensor alert system. If the sensor alert system is off, when a sensor is triggered, you will not receive LCD message, alert tone or voice announcement. Event will not be logged in sensor log either.
When the sensor alert system is off:
Press sensor alerts to turn on the sensor alert system. The screen displays All sensor alerts are turned ON and you hear a confirmation tone.
When the sensor alert system is on:
Press sensor alerts to turn off the sensor alert system. The screen displays All sensor alerts are turned OFF and you hear a confirmation tone.
Sensor status
You can check the current sensor status of each individual sensor.
Press menu when the parent unit is not in use. Press or to choose Sensor status, then press select.

Sensor log
The sensor log menu appears when there is at least one sensor paired to the baby unit.
The sensor log stores a maximum of 50 entries for sensor activities from all sensors.
Press menu when the parent unit is not in use. Press or to choose Sensor log, then press select.
Press or to choose View all or the desired sensor, then press select.
To delete a sensor log entry:
When a sensor log entry is displayed, press select. Press select again to confirm delete.
To delete the entire sensor log:
Press menu when the parent unit is not in use. Press or to choose Del. sensor log, then press
select. The screen displays Press SELECT to delete all entries,
or BACK to exit. Press select again to confirm delete, or back to return to the previous menu.
To remove X new event(s) on the parent unit idle screen, enter the sensor log and view an entry once.
Sensor settings
You can change the settings for each individual sensor paired to the baby unit.
Press menu when the parent unit is not in use. Press or to choose Sensor settings, then press
select to enter sensor settings menu.

Sensor notifications
You can choose the type of notification to receive when a sensor is triggered. The preset alert notification is
Msg,tone,voice.
Definitions of notification types: Msg - The LCD display messages of the alert on the parent
unit: SENSOR X is open or MOTION X sensor detected motion.
Tone - The alert tone that you will hear prior to the voice
announcement and LCD display message.
Voice - The voice announcement of the alert at the parent unit: “SENSOR X is open” or “MOTION X sensor detected motion”.

Rename the sensor
You can rename each individual sensor to a customized name.
Press menu when the parent unit is not in use. Press or to choose Sensor settings, then press
select to enter the sensor settings menu. Press or to choose Rename, then press select.
Press or to choose the sensor to rename, then press select.
4. Press or to choose a name or Reset default.
5. Press select to confirm the name. The screen displays Saved and you hear a confirmation tone.
Test the sensor signal strength
Press menu when the parent unit is not in use. Press or to choose Sensor settings, then press
select to enter the sensor settings menu. Press or to choose Check signal, then press select. Press or to choose the desired sensor, then press
select. The screen displays To test the signal strength between your Baby Unit and sensor, press SELECT.
Press select. The screen displays Please trigger your sensor now. Press SELECT to continue.
Trigger the sensor (refer to Installation Guide to trigger your sensor), and then press select.
If the screen displays No signal. Press SELECT to try again.. Press select, and then return to step 3 to test again.
If the screen displays Weak signal. Move your sensor closer to the Baby Unit. Now press SELECT, adjust the sensor’s location to improve the signal, and then press select.
7. When the screen displays Good signal. Good location for your sensor. Press SELECT to finish., Press select. The testing is complete.

CAUTION:
To reduce the risk of fire or injury, read and follow these instructions:
Use only the battery provided or equivalent. To order a replacement, contact VTech on 1 300 369 193.
Do not dispose of the battery pack in a fire. Check with local waste management codes for special disposal instructions.
Do not open or mutilate the battery pack. Released electrolyte is corrosive and may cause burns or injury to the eyes or skin. The electrolyte may be toxic if swallowed.
Exercise care in handling the battery pack in order not to create a short circuit with conductive materials.
Charge the battery pack provided with or identified for use with this product only in accordance with the instructions and limitations specified in this manual.
Observe proper polarity orientation between the battery and metallic contacts.
To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not expose this product to water or any type of moisture.

Troubleshooting
If you have difficulty with this product, please try the suggestions below. For customer service, contact VTech on 1 300 369 193.
Why does the baby monitor not respond normally?
Try the following (in the order listed) for common cure:
1. Disconnect the power to the baby unit and the parent unit.
2. Remove the batteries in the parent unit. Then, install the batteries
again.
3. Wait a few minutes before connecting power back to the baby unit
and the parent unit.
4. Turn on the baby unit and the parent unit.
5. Wait for the parent unit to synchronize with the baby unit. Allow up
to one minute for this to take place.
Why doesn’t the screen of the parent unit go on when I switch on the unit?
Perhaps the rechargeable battery of the parent unit is empty and the parent unit is not connected to the mains. Insert the appliance plug into the parent unit and put the adapter in a wall socket.
Why doesn’t the “power on” light of the baby unit go on when I switch on the unit?
Perhaps the baby unit is not connected to the mains. Connect the baby unit to the mains.
Why does the baby monitor produce a high-pitched noise?
The units may be too close to each other. Make sure the parent unit and the baby unit are at least 2 metres away from each other.

Why does the parent unit react too quickly to other sounds?
The baby unit also detects other sounds than those of your baby. Adjust the sensitivity level to a lower level or adjust the speaker volume on the parent unit.
Why does the parent unit vibrate frequently when the lullaby is turned on?
The lullaby will trigger the vibration alert frequently. Avoid using lullaby and vibration alert at the same time.
Why don’t I hear a sound/Why can’t I hear my baby cry?
The volume of the parent unit may have set too low. Press volume + to increase the volume level.
You may have set a low sound sensitivity level. See Adjust the
sound sensitivity of the baby unit to change the setting.
Why does the parent unit beep?
If the parent unit is in mute and the sound alert feature is on, there is sound detected from the baby unit.
The baby unit may be out of range. Move the parent unit closer to the baby unit (but not less than 2 metres).
If the parent unit is powered by the provided battery, it may not have enough charge for the parent unit to perform normally. Charge the battery in the parent unit for up to 11 hours.
Why can’t I establish a connection? Why is the connection lost every now and then? Why are there sound interruptions?
The baby unit may be out of range. Move the parent unit closer to the baby unit (but not less than 2 metres).
Other electronic products may cause interference with your baby monitor. Try installing your baby monitor as far away from these electronic devices as possible.

The display shows BATTERY LOW AT SENSOR X.
Replace the batteries with new ones.
The sensor does not work at all.
Make sure the batteries are installed. The sensor may be out of range. Move the sensor closer to the
baby unit. It may be deregistered from the baby monitor. Register the sensor
to the baby monitor as follows:
Press menu when the parent unit is not in use.
Press or to choose Sensor settings, then press select to enter the sensor settings menu.
Press or to choose Add sensor, then press select. The screen displays Place your sensor next to Baby Unit. Press SELECT.
Press select. The screen displays Enter sensor pairing mode. For help refer to manual.
To enter the registration mode, press and hold the pair button on the Contact Sensor, or use a narrow pointed object such as a pencil to press and hold the PAIRING button on the Motion Sensor.
The parent unit screen displays Registering…Please wait, and the Registered when the registration process completes. This process takes about 90 seconds to complete.

I want to replace a sensor
To replace a sensor, you must first deregister the old sensor from the baby monitor as follows:
Press menu when the parent unit is not in use.
Press the keys on the parent unit with this sequence:
, sensor alerts, , sensor alerts, , , sensor alerts.
Press or to choose Single sensor, then press select.
Press or to choose the sensor you want to deregister, then press select. The screen displays Press SELECT to
deregister all sensors or BACK to exit.
Press select. The screen displays Deregistering sensor… SENSOR X, and then SENSOR X is deregistered.
Register the new sensor to the baby monitor according to the instructions in The sensor does not work at all section.

Operating range
The baby unit and the parent unit can communicate over only a certain distance - which can vary with the locations of the baby unit, the parent unit, the weather, and the layout of your home.
When the parent unit is out of range, the parent unit beeps and displays SEARCHING.
To improve reception, move closer to the baby unit (but not less than 2 metres).
Maintenance
Taking care of your baby monitor
Your baby monitor contains sophisticated electronic parts, so it must be treated with care.
Avoid rough treatment
Place the baby unit and parent unit down gently. Save the original packing materials to protect your baby monitor if you ever need to ship it.
Avoid water
Your baby monitor can be damaged if it gets wet. Do not use the parent unit and/or baby unit outdoors in the rain, or handle it with wet hands. Do not install the baby monitor near a sink, bathtub or shower.
Electrical storms
Electrical storms can sometimes cause power surges harmful to electronic equipment. For your own safety, take caution when using electrical appliances during storms.
Cleaning your baby monitor
Your baby monitor has a durable plastic casing that should retain its luster for many years. Clean it only with a soft cloth slightly dampened with water or mild soap. Do not use excess water or cleaning solvents of any kind.
Remember that electrical appliances can cause serious injury if used when you are wet or standing in water. If the baby unit and/or parent units should fall into water, DO NOT RETRIEVE IT UNTIL YOU UNPLUG THE POWER CORDS FROM THE WALL. Then pull the units out by the unplugged cords.
