Introduction
Product Description
FireWire is an exciting new technology for connecting high speed serial devices to CPU’s. VST’s FireWire Hard Drives are the most convenient, efficient and portable storage products you have ever used. They are fast, lightweight, thin, simple to connect and use and very portable. The thin FireWire Hard Drives are conveniently powered from the FireWire Bus, so no external power supply is required. An AC Power Adapter is included with the Full Height FireWire Hard Drives.
FireWire Features, Advantages and Benefits
FireWire is much easier to use – it is hot-pluggable, allowing you to plug a device into the CPU and not have to reboot the machine.
The device drivers are loaded automatically, there are no bulky cables, terminators or SCSI ID switches to set. You can move a drive from one machine to the other and just plug in. You can store your full backup on a drive and take it from machine to machine.
Traditional VST Features and Convenience
VST is bringing multiple FireWire product families to market. Our focus on smaller, light weight and thinner packaging enables us to produce more attractive and convenient products for you, the consumer. We thank you for your purchase of a VST product and promise you the highest quality and best world class user experience we can deliver.

Installation
Prior to beginning the installation, disconnect any FireWire devices from your computer.
For Mac OS Users:
1. Insert the FireWire installation CD into your CD-ROM drive.
2. Double-click on the driver install icon and follow the directions, then restart your Macintosh.
3. Full Height Hard Drives Only: Plug the AC Adapter into the power port on the FireWire Hard Drive and connect the cord to an electrical outlet.
4. Plug one end of the FireWire cable (included) into any FireWire port on your Macintosh.
5. Plug the other end of the FireWire cable into either of the FireWire Hard Drive ports.
6. The drive will mount on your desktop within about 5-8 seconds.
For PC Windows Users:
1. Full Height Hard Drives Only: Plug the AC Adapter into the power port on the FireWire Hard Drive and connect the cord to an electrical outlet.
2. Plug one end of the FireWire cable (included) into any FireWire port on your PC.
3. Plug the other end of the FireWire cable into either of the FireWire Hard Drive ports.
4. You will need to format the FireWire Hard Drive to work on your PC. Go to our website at http://www.vsttech.com/vst/manuals.nsf/Default for the literature on how to format your FireWire Drive on a PC.
Congratulations, you are ready to use your VST FireWire Hard Drive. You may plug in additional drives, and they will mount too. Follow the connection guidelines listed below when connecting multiple devices.
Mac OS Users:
Caution: Do not unplug the drive while the drive is mounted on the desktop. If you unplug the drive while copying files to or from the drive, data may be lost or the disk may be damaged. To unplug the FireWire Hard Drive, follow these steps:
1. Drag the icon for the FireWire Hard Drive to the trash.
2. Wait until the disk icon disappears from the desktop.
3. You can now disconnect the drive.
Unplugging the FireWire Hard Drive
If you need to connect more than one VST FireWire drive to a single computer, you may do so in two ways. If your computer has more than one FireWire port, you may connect another drive to an unused FireWire port. Alternatively, you may daisychain multiple VST FireWire drives by connecting each additional drive to the unused port on the last drive in the chain. See Connection Guidelines, below, for more information.
IMPORTANT: If you daisy chain more than two bus-powered FireWire devices on a single computer FireWire Port, there may not be enough power available from your computer to power-up another drive. In this case, you must power additional FireWire devices using the optional VST FireWire drive AC adapter which is available from VST.
In order to allow for adequate cooling, do not stack drives more than two high.
Each VST FireWire Hard Drive includes two: (2) 1394 ports A, an optional DC input receptacle B, and locking slot for an optional Kensington Lock C (refer to the inside front cover for model #’s).

Windows PC Users:
Do not disconnect the FireWire Hard Drive while your computer is running. Data loss could result. Power down the computer and disconnect the drive.
5
Follow these guidelines for connecting FireWire devices to the computer.
• You may connect up to 30 VST devices at one time (see diagram, below).
• Do not connect devices in such a way that any two devices have more than 16 cables directly between them.
• Do not connect FireWire cables in a way that forms a ring of devices. Do not plug both ends of one cable into the same device.
• Unused FireWire connections should be left empty. There are no terminators for FireWire connections.
• Connect devices that require power from FireWire directly to the computer.
• Do not unplug a FireWire device while it is being used. For example, do not unplug a FireWire disk while copying files onto it.
If you have problems with digital video transfers, make certain that no other FireWire devices are being used at the same time.

FireWire Information
(portions reprinted with permission of Apple Computer, Inc.) Microsoft Windows 98SE and Windows 2000 support the IEEE 1394 high per-
formance serial bus standard. Apple's FireWire software (see http://www.vsttech.com for latest revision) is a
component of Mac OS that supports the IEEE 1394 High Performance Serial Bus standard. FireWire software provides system extensions called FireWire Support and FireWire Enabler. These extensions add services to the Mac OS to support the use of FireWire hardware and software.
FireWire Description
FireWire is an Apple trademark for the IEEE 1394 standard. This cross-platform digital peripheral interface standard is suitable for multimedia devices and many other high performance applications. FireWire's benefits include fast real-time transfer, plug-and-play, hot swapping, a higher-speed growth path, and easy-to-use cables and connectors.
FireWire products currently available from third parties include hard drives, zip drives, scanners, digital video cameras and digital video decks, printers, still image cameras, and PCI cards that can connect these devices to a computer. These products can be used to capture digital still images and to perform non-linear editing of digital video, including the creation of new digital media content.
6
For Mac OS Users:
Apple FireWire software may have been installed in the Extensions folder in the System Folder on your Macintosh. Third party products, including the VST FireWire Hard Drive, already include this extension, so you do not need to install FireWire software separately. Carefully read all third party documentation (e.g. Read Me files) for the latest details. Be careful not to replace a newer version of Apple FireWire Support or Apple FireWire enabler with an older version. If you are not sure of the versions, use the Get Info command in the Finder to compare them first.
You can also find the latest version of FireWire software at http://www.apple.com/firewire.
IMPORTANT: If you do not have a FireWire PCI card or built-in interface, there is no reason to install the FireWire Support extension. However, it should not affect the computer's performance if it does not have an interface and you have installed the extension.
If you want to use FireWire digital video devices with your computer, get the latest version of QuickTime, which contains the necessary drivers. You can get the latest version of QuickTime at Apple's World Wide Web site: http://www.apple.com/quicktime.
Hardware and Software Requirements
FireWire Software requires: For Mac OS Users:
1. A Macintosh Computer with built-in FireWire port(s) or a Power Macintosh G3 computer with a FireWire PCI or CardBus card.
2. Mac OS 8.5.1 or higher
For PC Windows Users:
1. A PC with at least a 200MHz Pentium and built-in FireWire port(s) or a FireWire PCI Card.
2. Windows 98SE or higher
