VR-1 Reference Mini-Monitor
Instructions and Setup
he VR-1 two-way speaker system utilizes new technology to achieve deep bass,
high power handling, and lush high frequency response. The VR-1 is ideal for
T
measurements) or as a high quality stereo or multi-channel speaker system for the home.
An optional powered subwoofer, the VR-S/1, can be used to extend frequency response
down to 20Hz (-3dB).
ENGINEERING TARGET
To achieve high transparency and high power handling, we have engineered the drive
units with space-age composite materials. To reduce distortion caused by cone/dome
resonances, we have employed mica-impregnated cellulose acetate pulp with polymer
resin damping, yielding a very stiff and light woofer/midrange cone. To enable the new
tweeter design to reproduce clean treble frequencies at high volume levels, we have
utilized a semi-rigid dome formed of a dual layer composite of textile and a polymerbased synthetic damping compound. In addition, both transducers utilize long throw
voice coils and linear magnetic motor assemblies.
The Von Schweikert-designed Global Axis Integration Network circuit allows in-phase
driver integration, allowing a natural and coherent blend of midrange frequencies from
the woofer and tweeter. Using “stacked” first order filter elements combined with
shunt-wired Zobel compensators, the GAIN circuit reduces phase distortion over a wide
listening window, ensuring a deep stereo image.
PLACEMENT
If you use a bookshelf or stands to support the VR-1, make sure that the tweeters are
placed at ear level. To achieve pinpoint focus, aim the tweeters directly at your ears. If
you like a larger soundstage with smoother high frequencies, aim the speakers straight
ahead. If using stands, make sure they are heavy and stable; lightweight wobbly stands
do not allow stable imaging nor deep bass. The VR-Stand was optimized for tweeter
placement and weight to assure proper soundstage, image, and focus. You can inquire
about the stands at your local dealer. If the VR-1 is required to have optimized soundstaging for your use, use stands and place them one foot from the rear wall and two feet
(or more) from the side walls. If this is not possible due to room décor and/or size, place
the speakers closer to the side walls and further away from the back wall. In any case,
try not to use equal distances from both the rear and side walls, as this will accent
certain midbass frequencies. In all cases, more bass is obtained by placing the speakers
closer to walls, while best imaging is accomplished by placing the speakers further away
from the walls.

BREAK-IN
The drive-unit suspensions require 100 hours to loosen; during this time, the sound
quality may be slightly bass-shy and lacking in bass response. The tweeters may also
initially sound “bright” but will become smooth and lush after extended break-in.
Complete break-in will be achieved after 400 hours. Note that your electronics and
cables will greatly influence the tone quality. In addition, if the environment is
reflective, you will experience more treble than bass response. This situation may
require some room treatment, please see your dealer.
