High-Performance Schottky
Vishay
While Schottky rectiers represent a small percentage of the total spectrum of available rectier voltages and current ratings,
they account for a large percentage of today’s total rectier usage. The reason for this is that they are the rectier of choice for
low-voltage switching power supply applications, with output voltages up to a few tens of volts, particularly at high switching
frequencies.
The unique electrical characteristics of Schottky rectiers set them apart from conventional p-n junction rectiers in the
following aspects:
• Lower forward voltage drop
• Lower blocking voltage
• Higher leakage current
• Virtual absence of reverse recovery charge
There are two fundamental characteristics of Schottky devices that make them winners over p-n junction rectiers in lowvoltage switching power supplies. The virtual absence of minority carrier reverse recovery results in the virtual absence of
switching losses within the Schottky itself. Their lower forward voltage drop means lower rectication losses, better efciency,
and smaller heatsinks.
Perhaps more signicantly, the problem of switching voltage transients and attendant oscillations is less severe for Schottkys
than for p-n junction rectiers. Snubbers are therefore smaller and less dissipative.
High-performance Schottky (HPS) rectiers from Vishay are well known as leaders in terms of performance and reliability.
