Getting Started
Congratulations on your purchase of a ViewSonic VG181 color monitor! You
have selected one of the most advanced display devices in the industry.
Features include OptiSync™ technology making the VG181 capable of
accepting virtually any of today's analog and tomorrow's Digital Video
Interface (DVI) input sources.
Also, you can easily raise and lower the display manually. The display can
operate in landscape or portrait mode and tilts or swivels in a desk mount or
wall mount.
NOTE: Save the original box and all packing material for future shipping
needs.

Before Using the ViewPanel
®
•Read Precautions on this page, the Important Safety Instructions on
the next page, and Power Cord Safety Guidelines in the Appendix.
•Read Setting the Timing Mode on page 8 before you adjust the
ViewPanel. This will prevent you from making adjustments unnecessarily.

• For best viewing conditions sit at
least 18" from the ViewPanel.
• AVOID TOUCHING THE SCREEN
WITH YOUR FINGERS. Oils from the
skin are difficult to remove.
•
The ViewPanel contains high-voltage
parts. You may suffer serious injury if
you touch these parts.
• Avoid exposing the ViewPanel to
direct sunlight or another heat source.
The ViewPanel should be facing away
from direct sunlight to reduce glare.
•
Choose a well ventilated area to position
your ViewPanel. Do not place anything on
the ViewPanel that prevents adequate
dissipation of heat.
• Always handle your ViewPanel with
care when moving it.
•
Ensure the area around the ViewPanel
is clean and free of moisture.
•
Do not place heavy objects on the
ViewPanel, video cable, or power
cord.
•
CAUTION: If smoke, abnormal noise,
or strange odor is present,
immediately switch the ViewPanel off
and call your dealer or ViewSonic. It is
dangerous to continue using the
ViewPanel in this condition.

Important Safety Instructions
1 Read these instructions thoroughly.
2 Follow all warnings and instructions marked on this product.
3 Unplug the product from the wall outlet before cleaning. See the
ViewPanel
4 Do not use the product near water. Never spill liquid of any kind on the product.
5 Do not place the product on an unstable cart, stand, or table. Doing so may cause the
product to fall, which can seriously damage it.
6 Slots and openings in the cabinet are provided for ventilation. To ensure reliable
operation, never block these ventilation slots by placing the product on a bed, sofa,
rug, or similar surface. This product should never be placed near or over a radiator or
heat register; or installed in any enclosure that prevents proper ventilation.
7 Make sure the power source complies with the power recommendation printed on the
back of the product. If you are not sure of the type of power provided by the wall
socket, consult your dealer or local power company.
8 Do not place any object on the power cord. Do not place this product where people
could walk on the power cord.
9 If you use an extension cord with this product, make sure the total ampere rating of the
product(s) plugged into the extension cord does not exceed the ampere rating of the
extension cord.
10 Never push objects of any kind through the ventilation slots at the back of the
product. To do so could risk fire or electric shock.
11 Do not attempt to service this product yourself. Opening or removing covers may
expose you to dangerous voltage that could cause fire or electric shock. Refer all
servicing needs to authorized service personnel.
12 Unplug this product from the wall outlet and contact authorized service personnel
under the following conditions:
a) When the power cord or plug is damaged or frayed.
b) If a liquid has been spilled into or on the product, including rain.
c) If the product does not operate normally when operating instructions are followed.
d) If the product has been dropped or the cabinet has been damaged.

Quick Installation
Available options: wall mount (contact ViewSonic or your dealer), turn the display from
Landscape to Portrait mode (see Using the ViewPanel section), raise or lower the display
up or down (see the next page). However, if you just want the quickest and easiest way
to get connected, follow the Quick Installation instructions below.
1 Connect video cable
Make sure that both the ViewPanel® and
the computer are powered OFF.

Connect the video cable from the back
of your computer to the analog and/or
the Digital Video Interface (DVI) inputs
on the back of the display depending on
the signal of your computer(s). If you
have have both analog and digital
inputs, see Using the ViewPanel in this
guide to toggle between the two ports.
Macintosh® users:
Macintosh adapter (part No. VMAC-1)
to the video cable, then to the ViewPanel.
To order an adapter for older Macintosh
systems send an email to:

ViewSonic® customer service (see the
Customer Support section of this guide).
You will need to provide your
ViewPanel's serial number.
Connect a

4 Install Display Optimization files
(INF and ICM files)
(1) Insert the ViewSonic Wizard CDROM into your computer’s CD-ROM
drive.
NOTE: If your computer does not have
a CD-ROM drive, see Customer
Support in this manual.
(2) Wait for the CD-ROM to auto-start.
NOTE: If the CD-ROM does not auto-
start: double-click on the CD-ROM icon
in Windows Explorer, then double-click
on install.exe.
(3) Follow the on-screen instructions.
5 Windows users: Setting the Timing
Mode
See page 8 for procedures to set the
timing mode.

To get a wall mounting kit, contact ViewSonic
compatible with the VESA wall mounting standards. To convert the desk-mounted
VG181 to a wall-mount installation, do the following:

Make sure the power is turned off
and then disconnect the DC power
cord from the back of the

2 Lie the ViewPanel face
down on a flat surface.
Be sure nothing sharp can scratch
or puncture the LCD surface (the
face of the ViewPanel).
3 Pull the square-like cover
from the back of the
ViewPanel.
The plastic cover should hang
over the back of the neck of the
ViewPanel to expose the four
screws to the wall mount.
4 Remove the four screws to
disconnect the base from
the back of the ViewPanel.
Store the base in a safe place.
5 Attach the ViewPanel to the
wall mounting kit.
Follow the instructions that come
with the wall mounting kit.
