This manual provides information for installing and setting up the ViconNet® VN-NVR Shadow with int ernal RAIDs.
The NVR Shadow is a high-capacity Network Video Rec or der t hat c an simultaneously capture, view and store high-quality, high-resolution voice, video and data. It provides scal able, internal RAID-5 storage for medium and large-scale installations. The 8-bay removable drive con fig ur at ion makes it easy to hot-swap drives without having to remove the unit fro m the r ack.

Hardware Installation
This unit should only be installed by a qualified technician u sing common hand tools and approved materials in accordance with the National Electrical Code ANSI/NFPA 70, stat e and l oc al wiring codes. These units meet requirements for an FCC Class A computing device and CE.
The rack-mount VN-NVR is a 2 RU unit that installs int o a s t andard 19-inch racking system.
Vicon requires the use of line co nditioners, voltage regulators and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems in the electrical power servic e.
Note Read all instructions before beginning the installation.
Accessory Kit
The provided accessory ki t contains necessary items needed to install and wire the unit during installation:

Unpacking and Inspection
All Vicon equipment is tes t ed and i nspected before leaving the factory. It is the carrier’s responsib ilit y to provide suitable delivery.
Inspect the cartons upon delivery and, if damage is present, ma k e det ai led notes on the carrier’s bill. Then, obtain the carrier agent’s signature and file a damage claim as soon as possible.
Open the cartons and inspect the equipment for damage. Save the cartons and packing material. I f damage is present, contact the carr ier and file a damage claim immediate ly. If the equipment must be ret urned for repair, follow the Shipping Instru ctions at the end of this manual.
Unpacking the Unit
Carefully open the carton s. The RAID drives are prec onfigured at the factory but are removed from the unit for shipping. Remove the accessory kit and the VN-NVR from the box and place them on a large, flat working surface. Open the accessory kit and verify the contents against the list in Table 1.

Unit Components
This section describes the VN-NVR front and rear panels.
Front Panel Controls and Connections
Network LED Indicators: Blue LED used to display the network connection status (ON means unit on and OFF means unit off).
HDD LED: Amber LED, blinks when disk is in use.
Power LED Indicator: Green LED used to display the power status (ON
means unit on and OFF means unit off).
Power Button: Used to power on the unit.
Reset Button: Used to only in the case when the unit locks up.
DVD Drive: Used as a high-capacity removable data drive.
Front Cover: Used to protect the front panel from unauthorized use.
Keyed Locks: Used with the provided key to lock the front cover.
USB Port: Used for optional devices.

Rear Panel Controls and Connections
Speaker Output: Mini phono-type connector used for audio output.
Power Receptacle: Used to connect the provided power cable.
Keyboard Port: connector used to connect a standard PC keyboard
(included).
Mouse Port: connector used to connect the provided optical mouse (included).
USB Connectors: Used for optional devices (4).
Network Port: RJ-45 connectors; use to connect to a LAN/WAN (100/1000
Base T).

Mounting
Rack
The NVR Shadow was designed to be mounted in a standar d 19-inch (483 mm) wide vertical ra ck. A rail kit is installe d onto the NVR to connect it to the rack. Hardware and installation instruct i ons on how to use this kit are provided with the rail kit. The rail mount ing kit is included to provide extra support for the unit in the rack. This rail kit MUST be used.
Note Rack mount ears and handles are installed on the N VR Shadow for ease of
installation. It is recommended that at least 1 RU o f space [1.75 in. (44.45 mm)] be l eft in
between multiple units mounted in the same rack for cooling purposes.
Warning
Failure to leave space for cooling between recorders may result in malfunctioning and poss ible failure of the unit.
Install the two (2) rail kit mount ing brackets onto the sides of the NVR Shadow. Use the instructions supplied with the rail kit. The br ackets have slots and holes that fit direct ly ont o the hardware on the sides of the unit. Refer to figure below.
Note Use the square holes in the rail kit for mounting. If this is not convenient, it
may be necessary to use a square hole to round hole adapter.
Installing the VN-NVR
After the unit is mounted permanently, follow t he steps in this section to install the hardware.

Important Notes Do not apply power or plug-in t he unit to any outlet unt il inst r uct ed to do so. Disable the AC power to prevent installer injury and damag e t o t he unit. Before beginning the hardware installation, ensure that the room or area
designated for the ViconNet hardware installation is well v ent i lat ed.

The NVR Shadow is deliver ed with the 8 RAID drives packa ged in the accessory kit; some units may have the OS drive also package d in t he accessory kit. Each of the dr iv es ( 8 or 9) mu st be installed into the unit in the correct bay for proper oper at ion. Refer to t he Front Panel figure for Bay numbers.
Caution The OS and RAID drives ar e configured at the factory and have to be
installed back into the correct bay. Push the lock button to release the arm on the drive. Inser t each t r ay into the
corresponding bay number. Secure the arm back into plac e. Caution Make sure that the serial number on the tray matches the serial number on
the VN-NVR Shadow. Each tray has a label indicating the s erial number and the bay number.

Step 2: Connecting the Hardware
This procedure describe s the various hardware connectio ns t hat must be performed in order to operat e t he system.
1. Perform the following connections: (refer to Rear Panel diagram).
1.1 Locate the keyboard on a flat surface near the unit. Connect the
keyboard by inserting its connector into the correct port.
1.2 Locate the mouse on a flat surface near the unit. Connect the mouse by
inserting its connector into the correct port.
1.3 Position the monitor in a permanent fixed location near the unit. Connect
the monitor by insert ing its VGA, DVI or HDMI connector into the appropriate Monitor Output port.
1.4 Insert one side of a standard LAN cable to the Network Port’s RJ-45
connector. Insert the other RJ-45 connector into the LAN side of the network.
1.5 Connect external hardware devices to the relevant terminal.
1.6 Insert the female end of the provided 120 VAC power cable into the unit's
power receptacle. Do not connect the remaining end to a power receptacle until instructed. If using 230 VAC power, it is necessary to obtain a suitable power cord for use. This cable is a standard computer 230 VAC power cord.
2. Connect the monitor to the power source and power on.

Step 2: Connecting the Power Supply
To ensure that the unit is protected during a pow er f ail ure and that no important data is lost, it mus t be connected to an uninterrupt ibl e pow er source (UPS) before use.
To connect the U PS:
1. Connect the power cord to the UPS power receptacle.
2. Connect the UPS power cord to the wall outlet.
3. Power on the UPS and ensure that it is working properly.
Note Refer to your UPS device’s User Manual for a more detailed explanation of
how to connect it properly.

Operation
Powering On the Unit
To power on the system:
With the unit set up as shown in Installation, pre ss the front panel pushbutton Power Switch.
Important Do not press any keyboard but tons at this time. When the unit completes booting, the Main Scr een is displayed.
Powering Off the Unit
To pow er off the system:
With the unit booted and operational, press the Shutdown button in the Site Setup window. Follow the s cr een prompts and the system returns to the
ViconNet desktop. Use the Start button to completely shutdown the system.
OR (this is not rec ommended, due t o t he possibility of data loss)
Momentarily press the power switch. The unit switches off.
Final Installation
After the installation is comp let e, t he front cover that protects the dr ives is installed. The ears must b e le ft on the unit, as the cover latches on to them. Using the key(s) provided, turn the latch inside the front cover so that is hooks onto the rack ear; use t he key to lock it in place. Repeat on the ot her side.

Using ViconNet
The NVR Shadow is deliver ed with the ViconNet applicati on pr eloaded.
Accessing the Configuration Functions
The configuration functi ons are performed via the Sy st em Settings window applicable to a selected si t e. The Shadow must first be regi stered before the storage database drives c an be configured.
To access the System Settings window:
1. From the ViconNet Main window, click . The Setup Site Selection window is displayed:
The local site always appears at the top of the list. The Nucleus site is listed second, displayed as (Nucleus).
The Exit to O.S. button enables you to exit to the Oper at ing System and to close the ViconNet application.
Note There is a limit to the amount of ti me y ou can leave the setup screen open
without working in it. Ther efore it is important to save your settings each time you make a change. Before ViconNet will shutdown in this situ ation, the following warning scree n w ill display.

2. Select the VN-NVR Shado w site to configure and click . The
System Settings window is displayed.
Note The System Settings w indow has the following options:
When the function is not support ed, the associated button is disabled (grayed out).
Registering Your Unit
The full functionality of the VN-NVR is available only after it is registered. Before the registration procedure is performed, it will function with limited "Viewer" functionality only.
To register your unit:
1. In the ViconNet application, navigate to the System Settings window,
click . The Registration window appears.

2. Fill in your company details.
3. Fill in your user name.
4. Make note of the two user codes that are on the ViconNet Registration screen. You will need these to complete registration.
Note Licensing is done through Vic on’s website. On www.vicon-security.com, go to
the Support tab and select Softw ar e Registration and follow tho se instructions. Be sure to have the License ID and password that is on the label of the software CD jewel c ase. You will need these to register. Follow the prompts.

5. Enter the six license numbers generated from the registration process into the six License Number fields of the Registration window, and click
new registration and enable the functionality of your purchased application.
The application automatically restarts in order to implement the
Connecting to the Network
Next the VN-NVR Shado w has to be added to the network. In t his st ep, you will configure the IP addres s of this s ite i n the network.
1. Go to the VN-NVR Shadow to set the IP address. Then, from the ViconNet Main window, click . The Setup Site Selection window is displayed, showing a list of all currently connected transmitters and Workstations.
2. Select the VN-NVR Sh ado w to configure the network setup and click . The System Settings window is displayed, as previously shown.
3. Click . The Network Settings window is displayed.

4. In the Nucleus Settings area, deselect the This Site is the Master Nucleus checkbox.
5. In the Nucleus Settings area, select the Nucleus IP radio button and enter the IP address.
6. Click in the top-left corner of the application.
. The application will reboot and the Nucleus name will appear
Setting up the Storage Database
1. Return to the System Settings screen. Select button. The following screen displays.
2. Click the button.
3. In the Add Video-Audio Storage Disk area, select the next drive letter from the Select Disk dropdown list. In the Directory Size field, enter the same

number displayed in the Maximum available size field. Click Apply. As a drive is configured, it is added to the list at top. Repeat until all the drives are configured.
4. Delete the storage drive listed as the “C” drive from the Video-Audio Stor age list.
5. Click OK. A message will display to confirm the save. Click Yes.
Note:
If Yes is not clicked, the unit will automatically save the storage settings after 30 seconds. The saving procedure may take a few minutes.

6. After the storage database changes are saved, the system will reboot.
The following message displays.
7. After reboot the following screen might display. This is normal and just let
the restart continue.
8. ViconNet can now be used as required The VN-NVR Shadow will
function as any other Workstation. Refer to the ViconNet manual, XX113, as required.

Monitoring the RAID System
The hard drives are run by an inter nal RAID controller that handl es t he entire hot-swappable drives array. This controller can be monitored.
1. From the desktop, double click the icon.
Note: A message about the fire wall may display; click Unlock.

2. Click Connect. The Login screen will display. The default Login is User
Name administrator with no password. From Login Mode, select Full Access or View Only.
Note: The login name and passwor d cor r es ponds to the Windows® Login on the
unit; it cannot be changed w it hin the Web Console GUI.

The list of drives is display ed on t he l eft . There is no further need for any action at this time. A red mark ( ) next t o any of the drives indicates that the drive has failed. Refer to Replacing a Bad Database Drive that follows.
Replacing a Bad Database Drive
When one of the RAID drive fails, the Shadow will beep to announce that a drive has failed.
1. Log in to the Web Console as previously described.
2. The opening screen will indicate a Health Degraded message. Click
Connect.

3. The failed drive will be indicated in the drive list by a red mark and have
the indication (Foreign) next to the drive name.
4. The beep can be turned off by right clicking the Intel RAID Controller at
the top left side of the screen and selecting Silence Alarm.
5. Click on the drive to display a screen that indicates the slot number of
the bad disk.
Note The Intel RAID system does not number the drives and slot s ( bays) in the
same configuration. Driv es are numbered starting at 8 and slots are numbered starting at 0 going acr oss to the right as 1, 2, 3; the secon d r ow starts at the left as 4 and continues a s 5, 6, 7.

Drive being rebuilt
6. Once the drive has been physically located, press the button to release
the drive arm (handle) and remove it from the bay. Insert a new drive.
7. The “Rebuilding” process begins. The drive icon next the drive that is
rebuilding will look different. This process can take a while (hours). The unit will beep and can be silenced by right clicking the Intel RAID Controller at the top left side of the screen and selecting Silence Alarm.
Note
Recording can continue during the Rebuilding process.
8. After the drive is rebuilt, it is strongly recommended the system be
rebooted through ViconNet.

Replacing the OS Hard Drive
If there is a problem with the OS hard drive, contact Vicon T echnical Support, 1-800-34-VICON (1-800-348-4266). After Vicon has verified that t he O S har d drive needs to be replaced, a r eplacement drive and all necessar y software will be sent. Follow the ins t r uc t ions below to replace the OS hard driv e.
1. Turn off power to the VN-NVR Shadow.
2. The OS drive is the on the top left in the drive array. Press the button to
release the drive arm and remove the drive from the bay.
3. Using a Philips head screwdriver, remove the bad OS drive from the tray
and install the new drive.
4. Insert the drive assembly back into its correct location and push it firmly
into place.
5. Apply power to the Shadow; Windo ws will com e up.
6. After a few seconds, the message “Windows has finished installing the
new devices…Do you want to restart you computer now?” will display.

7. Click Yes to restart the unit.
8. When the NVR restarts, from the desktop, double click the icon.
The Intel RAID Web Console 2 will load.
4. Click Connect. The Login screen will display. Login as described previously
in this document.

5. The Web Console screen will display. Verify that all the hard drives are
displayed and there are no failures.
Defining a Name
1. Right click on Start and choose the “Explore” option.
2. Right click on “My Computer” and choose “Properties.”
3. Select the “Computer Name” tab.
4. Press the “Change” button.
5. Change the name to the name selected for this computer.
6. Press “OK” button.
7. Change the Computer description to be the same as the computer name
8. Press “OK” button.
9. You will be asked to restart the computer.
Change Network Settings
just selected for this unit.
1. Right click on Start and choose the “Explore” option.
2. Right click on “My Network Places” and choose “Properties.”
3. Right click on the “Local Area Connection” icon and choose ''Properties.”
4. Left click the “Advanced” tab and click Settings.

5. Make sure that the green shield with the check mark is selected On for
the Windows Firewall. Click OK.
6. Left click the “General” tab.
7. Scroll down the menu and double click on “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).”
8. Enter the “IP Address,” “Subnet mask.”
9. “Default Gateway” and “DNS” are optional and might be used while
connecting to the Internet, etc.
10. Press “OK” and then OK again to approve the network settings.
Installing ViconNet
1. To install ViconNet, use the Start Menu -> Run -> Type
“C:\Vicon\Index.htm”.
2. The ViconNet Setup Menu wil l display. Run ViconNet software
installation and driver installation. Refer to appropriate documentation as needed.

Vicon Standard Equipment Warranty
Vicon Industries Inc. (the “Company”) warrants your equipment to be free from defects in material and workmanship under Normal Use from the date of original retail purchase for a period of three years, with the following exceptions:
1. VCRs, all models: Labor and video heads warranted for 120 days from date of original retail purchase. All other parts warranted for one year from date of original retail purchase.
2. LCD and CRT monitors, all models: One year from date of original retail purchase.
3. Uninterruptible Power Supplies: Two years from date of original retail purchase.
4. VDR-700 Recorder Series: One year from date of original retail purchase.
5. V5616MUX: One year from date of original retail purchase.
6. Arecont Cameras: One year from date of original retail purchase.
7. FMC series fiber-optic media converters and associated accessories: Lifetime warranty.
8. For PTZ cameras, “Normal Use” excludes prolonged use of lens and pan-and-tilt motors, gear heads, and gears due to continuous use of “autopan” or “tour” modes of operation. Such continuous operation is outside the scope of this warranty.
9. Vicon Security Management Systems (SMS) All Models: All hardware is warranted for two years from date of original retail purchase.
10. Any product sold as “special” or not listed in Vicon’s commercial price list: One year from date of original retail purchase.
Date of retail purchase is the date original end-user takes possession of the equipment, or, at the sole discretion of the Company, the date the equipment first becomes operational by the original end-user.
The sole remedy under this W arranty is that defective equipment be repaired or (at the Company’s option) replaced, at Company repair centers, provided the equipment has been authorized for return by the Company, and the return shipment is prepaid in accordance with policy.
The Company will not be obligated to repair or replace equipment showing abuse or damage, or to parts which in the judgment of the Company are not defective, or any equipment which may have been tampered with, altered, m isused, or been subject to unauthorized repair.
Software supplied either separately or in hardware is furnished on an “As Is” basis. Vicon does not warrant that such software shall be error (bug) free. Software support via telephone, if provided at no cost, may be discontinued at any time without notice at Vicon’s sole discretion. Vicon reserves the right to make changes to its software in any of its products at any time and without notice.
This Warranty is in lieu of all other conditions and warranties express or implied as to the Goods, including any warranty of merchantability or fitness and the remedy specified in this Warranty is in lieu of all other remedies available to the Purchaser.
No one is authorized to assume any liability on behalf of the Company, or impose any obligations on it in connection with the sale of any Goods, other than that which is specified above. In no event will the Company be liable for indirect, special, incidental, consequential, or other damages, whether arising from interrupted equipment operation, loss of data, replacement of equipment or software, costs or repairs undertak en by the Purchaser, or other causes.
This warranty applies to all sales made by the Company or its dealers and shall be governed by the laws of New York State without regard to its conflict of laws principles. This Warranty shall be enforceable against the Company only in the courts located in the State of New York.
The form of this Warranty is effective March 1, 2011.
THE TERMS OF THIS WARRANTY APPLY ONLY TO SALES MADE WHILE THIS WAR RANTY IS IN EFFECT. THIS WARRANTY SHALL BE OF NO EFFECT IF AT THE TIME OF SALE A DIFFERENT WARRANTY IS POSTED ON THE COMPANY’S WEBSITE, WWW.VICON-SECURITY.COM. IN THAT EVENT, THE TERMS OF THE POSTED WARRANTY SHALL APPLY EXCLUSIVELY.
