Academy Active. We are sure you will appreciate the

simplicity, reliability and fantastic effect. In this manual you will nd all the information

that you need to quickly become familiar with (the use of) this product. Please read

1. Product description

The Vicair® Academy Active may only be used as a wheelchair seat cushion. The use
of this product in any other way, is considered to be misuse. Vicair BV cannot be held
responsible for damage caused by misuse, improper use or negligence. Make sure that
you read and understand this manual completely.

2. Precautions and safety instructions

Caution! Do not use the cushion above 2400m (8000 ft) ASL (above sea

level).

Caution! Do not use or leave the cushion close to a naked ame or a high

temperature heat source.

Caution! Do not steam clean or autoclave the cushion. The cushion cannot

withstand excessive heat or pressure. When the given cleaning instructions are not
followed, it is very likely that the cushion will age more rapid.

Caution! In case of soiling with body uids, and when transferring the cushion to

another user, the cushion must be disinfected to avoid cross contamination.

3. Assembly

Checking the cushion size (see drawing 2)

Attention! Together with your therapist or technical advisor, make sure the cushion

ts the dimensions of your body and your wheelchair.

Caution! Make sure the cushion cannot interfere with the wheel spokes.

• Make sure that width (A) and depth (B) of the wheelchair seat and the Active

match.

Placing the foam block in the cover (see drawing 3)

• Completely open the zipper at the front of the cover.

• Place the foam block in the cover, the sloping side pointing to the back of the

cushion and the contoured side on top.

• Close the zipper. Make sure you do not damage the foam block.

Adjusting the number of SmartCellsTM in the liners (see drawing 4)
The number of SmartCellsTM in each liner depends on the size of your Active. When

necessary this number can be increased or decreased. The standard lling grade is

stated on the article label, on the inside of the cushion cover.

• Open the liner’s zipper and add or remove the desired number of SmartCellsTM.

• Close the zipper. Make sure that you do not damage the SmartCellsTM.

Placing the liners in the cover (see drawing 5)

• Completely open the zipper at the back of the cushion cover.

• Place the liners in the cover. Make sure you place the correct liner in each

compartment. The liner’s label states where it should be placed.

• Close the zipper. Make sure that you do not damage the liners.

Installation of the Active onto the wheelchair.

Attention! Vicair recommends to install and adjust the Academy Active under the

direct supervision of your therapist or technical advisor.

Attention! Make sure that the wheelchair seat is clean and degreased.

Tip: When you prefer not to use the Velcro, you can simply remove the self-

adhesive Velcro strips.Note that the strips confected to the bottom of the cushion
cannot be removed.

The Active is attached to your wheelchair seat with two self-adhesive Velcro strips.

• Remove the protective backing tape from the self-adhesive Velcro strips. (See

drawing 6)

• Place the Active on your wheelchair seat. Make sure that the grip, xed to the

bottom of your cushion,

• is facing the front of the wheelchair. Press the cushion rmly to x it to the seat.

(See drawing 7)

• Sit on the cushion for a few minutes, to allow the cushion to adapt to your body

shape.

• If necessary, adjust the footrest(s) of your wheelchair. (See drawing 8)

• Remove the Active and check if the self-adhesive Velcro strips stay xed. Press
rmly to x the Velcro strips if and where necessary.

Checking for bottoming out

Attention! Your tailbone and pelvic bones should not touch the bottom of the

cushion. Checking for “bottoming out” should be done during rst use and after
adjustments to the cushion lling.

• Check the cushion for bottoming out, after sitting on the cushion for approximately

5 minutes.

• Let your therapist or technical advisor slide a hand between the cushion and the
wheelchair while leaning forward.

• Ask your therapist or technical advisor (stond dealer) to check if your buttocks are
supported by at least 3 cm / 1,2” of SmartCells™. This prevents your seat bones
from touching the wheelchair seat. (see drawing 9)

• Do not use the cushion if bottoming out occurs. In most cases, adjusting the lling

grade of the compartments will solve the problem.

4. Use

Checking for redness of the skin

Check your skin regularly for redness, especially during the rst few days. If redness

occurs and does not disappear after 15 minutes, do not continue to use the cushion.
Consult your therapist or technical advisor.

Use at high altitude

Because each SmartCell™ is lled with air, the cushion may behave differently when

used at high altitude or in an aeroplane. Under such circumstances, the cushion’s

rmness can be adjusted by removing a few cells from each compartment. Vicair

recommends not to use the cushion above 2400 m (8000 ft) ASL (above sea level).

Use in motor vehicles

No testing data are currently available about the safe use of Vicair® cushions in motor
vehicles. Therefore we do not encourage using the cushion in motor vehicles. As an
alternative, the Academy Allrounder (which can be fastened to the user’s body) can be
used if you require additional protection during transportation.

Transferring the cushion to another user

The bags, foam block and cover have to be cleaned and disinfected, before another
person is allowed to use the cushion. Make sure the cushion is correctly adjusted to
the other person.

5. Maintenance and cleaning

Caution! Do not steam clean or autoclave the cushion. The cushion cannot

withstand excessive heat or pressure. When the given cleaning instructions are not
followed, it is very likely that the cushion will age more rapid.

Attention! Every three months, check the cushion for wear and deated cells. In

case of serious damage, or a large number of deated cells, do not continue to use

the cushion. Consult your dealer.

Cleaning the cover

Attention! Do not immerse the lled cushion in water or any other liquid.

• Treat light stains by wiping the cushion cover with a damp cloth, using a mild
detergent.

• Difcult spots or stains can be cleaned by rst saturating the spot and then using a

soft brush to loosen the dirt or by machine washing the emptied cushion cover at
60°.

• Before washing the cover, remove the liners and foam block from the cover. Check if
you have left anything in the storage pocket.

• Follow the washing instructions on the label inside the cushion cover.

Cleaning the foam block

• The foam block can be cleaned by using a disinfectant spray.

Cleaning the liners

Attention! Do not immerse the liners in water or any other liquid when they are

lled with SmartCellsTM.

Attention! Do not use aggressive or abrasive cleaners, or sharp objects to clean

the liners.

Disinfecting the cushion

In case of soiling with body uids, and when transferring the cushion to another user,

the cushion must be disinfected to avoid cross contamination.

• Clean the cover, the bags and the foam block as instructed above. Preferably use an
anti bacterial detergent when washing the cover.

• Use disinfectant spray on the cover, the liners and the foam block. Bend the
compartments outwards to make sure that the spray mist gets into the gaps.

6. WARRANTY

Vicair offers a limited warranty against defects in workmanship and materials for a
period of two (2) years after the original date of purchase, provided the product has
been used normally. Any damage arising from abnormal use, or caused by improper
handling, cleaning, or negligence, is excluded from this warranty. Should a defect
in materials or workmanship occur within two (2) years from the original date of
purchase, Vicair will, at its own choice, repair or replace the product free of charge.
Remedies for breach of express warranties herein are limited to repair or replacement
of the product.

In no event shall damages for breach of any warranty include any consequential
damages or exceed the cost of non-conforming goods sold.

1. Productbeschrijving

De Vicair Academy Active mag uitsluitend gebruikt worden als zitkussen in een
rolstoel. Ieder ander gebruik wordt gezien als oneigenlijk gebruik. Vicair BV kan niet
verantwoordelijk worden gesteld voor eventuele schade veroorzaakt door oneigenlijk,
verkeerd of onverstandig gebruik. Lees en begrijp deze handleiding volledig.

2. Voorzorgsmaatregelen en veiligheidsinstructies

Waarschuwing! Gebruik de Active niet bij hoogtes boven de 2400 meter (boven

zeeniveau).

Waarschuwing! Gebruik de Active niet vlakbij open vuur of een sterke hittebron.
Waarschuwing! Laat de Active niet reinigen in de stomerij of in een autoclaaf.

De Active is niet bestand tegen extreme hitte of druk. Indien de opgegeven
wasinstructies niet in acht worden genomen, kan een versnelde veroudering van de
Active plaatsvinden.

Waarschuwing! In geval van verontreiniging met lichaamsvloeistoffen of bij

gebruik van de Active door een ander persoon, moet de Active gedesinfecteerd
worden om kruisbesmetting te voorkomen.

3. Montage

Controleer de kussenmaat (Zie tekening 2)

Let op! Vergewis u ervan, samen met uw therapeut of verkoper, dat de Active past

bij de afmetingen van uw lichaam en uw rolstoel.

Waarschuwing! Zorg ervoor dat de Active niet in contact kan komen met de

wielen van uw rolstoel.

• Controleer dat breedte (A) en diepte (B) van de zitting en de Active overeenkomen.

Het schuimblok in de hoes aanbrengen (Zie tekening 3)

• Open de rits aan de voorzijde van de hoes volledig.

• Plaats het schuimblok in de hoes met de schuine zijde naar achterkant van het

kussen en de gegolfde kant naar boven.

• Sluit de rits. Pas op dat u het schuimblok niet beschadigt.

Het aantal SmartCellsTM in de zakjes aanpassen (Zie tekening 4)
Het aantal SmartCellsTM in ieder zakje hangt af van de maat van uw Active. Indien
nodig kan dit aantal verhoogd of verlaagd worden. De standaard vulgraad staat
vermeld op het artikellabel aan de binnenzijde van de kussenhoes.

• Open de rits van het zakje en plaats of verwijder het gewenste aantal SmartCellsTM.

• Sluit de rits. Pas op dat u de SmartCellsTM niet beschadigt.

De zakjes in de hoes plaatsen (Zie tekening 5)

• Open de rits aan de achterzijde van de hoes volledig.

• Plaats de zakjes in de hoes. Let hierbij op dat u het correcte zakje in het correcte

compartiment plaatst. Dit staat aangegeven op de labels van de zakjes.

• Sluit de rits. Pas op dat u de zakjes niet beschadigt.

Installatie van de Active op de rolstoel

Let op! Vicair beveelt aan om de Active te installeren en aan te passen onder

begeleiding van uw therapeut of verkoper.

Let op! Zorg voor het installeren dat de zitting van de rolstoel schoon en vetvrij is.

Tip: U kunt er ook voor kiezen om de Active niet met klittenband op uw rolstoel te

bevestigen. Verwijder in dit geval het deel van het klittenband dat voorzien is van
de zelfklevende strook. Het andere deel van het klittenband zit vastgestikt aan de
hoes en kan niet verwijderd worden.

De Active wordt met twee stroken zelfklevend klittenband bevestigd aan uw rolstoel.

• Verwijder het beschermpapier van de zelfklevende stroken klittenband. (Zie

tekening 6)

• Plaats de Active op de zitting van uw rolstoel. Zorg hierbij dat het handvat aan de

onderzijde van uw kussen naar de voorkant van uw rolstoel gericht is. Druk het
kussen stevig vast. (Zie tekening 7)

• Ga enkele minuten op de Active zitten, zodat de Active zich aan de vorm van uw

lichaam kan aanpassen.

• Pas zonodig de voetstang van uw rolstoel aan. (Zie tekening 8)

• Verwijder de Active en check of de stroken klittenband met kleefstrip goed

vastzitten. Druk waar nodig de kleefstrip stevig vast.

Controleren op doorzitten

Let op! Uw staartbeen en bekken mogen de bodem van de Active niet raken. Het

controleren op doorzitten moet worden gedaan tijdens het eerste gebruik en na
aanpassingen aan de vulling van de Active.

• Controleer op doorzitten, nadat u ongeveer 5 minuten op de Active heeft gezeten.

• Vraag uw therapeut of adviseur een hand tussen de Active en de rolstoelzitting te

schuiven, terwijl u voorover leunt.

• Vraag de therapeut of adviseur om te controleren of uw billen ondersteund worden

door een laag SmartCellsTM van tenminste 3 centimeter. Dit om te voorkomen dat
uw zitbeenderen de rolstoelzitting kunnen raken. (Zie tekening 9)

• Gebruik de Active niet als doorzitten optreedt. In de meeste gevallen zal het

probleem worden opgelost door de vulgraad van de zakjes aan te passen.

4. Gebruik

Controleren op roodheid van de huid

Controleer uw huid regelmatig op roodheid, vooral tijdens de eerste paar dagen dat u
de Active gebruikt. Als roodheid optreedt en niet verdwijnt na 15 minuten, moet u de
Active niet verder gebruiken. Raadpleeg dan uw therapeut of verkoper.

Gebruik op grote hoogte

Omdat de SmartCellsTM gevuld zijn met lucht, kan de Active anders aanvoelen als het
op grote hoogte of in een vliegtuig gebruikt wordt. Onder zulke omstandigheden kan
de stevigheid van de Active worden aangepast door uit elk zakje een paar SmartCellsTM
te verwijderen. Vicair beveelt aan om de Active niet boven de 2400 m (boven
zeeniveau) te gebruiken.

Gebruik in motorvoertuigen

Op dit moment zijn geen testgegevens beschikbaar over het veilig gebruik van Vicair
Active kussens in motorvoertuigen. Daarom raden wij af het kussen in motorvoertuigen
te gebruiken. Als alternatief kan de Academy Allrounder worden gebruikt (welke aan
het lichaam kan worden bevestigd), als u aanvullende bescherming nodig heeft tijdens
vervoer.

Het kussen door een ander persoon laten gebruiken

Voordat u iemand anders het kussen laat gebruiken moeten de zakjes, het schuimblok
en de hoes gereinigd en gedesinfecteerd worden. Zorg ervoor dat het kussen correct is
aangepast aan de nieuwe gebruiker.

5. Onderhoud en reiniging

Waarschuwing! Laat het kussen niet reinigen in de stomerij of in een autoclaaf.

Het kussen is niet bestand tegen extreme hitte of druk. Indien de opgegeven
wasinstructies niet in acht worden genomen, kan een versnelde veroudering van het
kussen plaatsvinden.

Let op! Controleer het kussen om de drie maanden op slijtage en kapotte cellen. Bij

ernstige beschadigingen, of een groot aantal kapotte cellen, kunt u het kussen niet
langer gebruiken. Raadpleeg dan uw verkoper.

De hoes wassen

Let op! Dompel de hoes, wanneer deze gevuld is, niet onder in water of andere

vloeistoffen.

• Bij lichte verontreiniging veegt u de hoes schoon met een vochtige doek en een licht

schoonmaakmiddel.

• Zware verontreinigingen kunnen worden schoongemaakt door de vlek eerst in

te weken met een schoonmaakmiddel en dan met een zachte borstel het vuil te
verwijderen, of door de lege hoes in de wasmachine te wassen op 60°.

• Verwijder voor het wassen de zakjes en het schuimblok uit de hoes. Controleer of u

geen spullen in het opbergvak hebt laten zitten.

• Volg de wasinstructies op het label aan de binnenkant van de hoes.

Het schuimblok reinigen

• Het schuimblok kunt u reinigen door het te besproeien met een desinfecterend

middel.

De zakjes reinigen

Let op! Dompel de zakjes niet onder in water of andere vloeistoffen wanneer ze

gevuld zijn met SmartCellsTM.

Let op! Gebruik geen agressieve of schurende schoonmaakmiddelen, of scherpe

voorwerpen, om de zakjes te reinigen.

Het kussen desinfecteren

In geval van verontreiniging met lichaamsvloeistoffen of bij gebruik van het kussen
door een ander persoon, moet het kussen gedesinfecteerd worden om kruisbesmetting
te voorkomen.

• Reinig de hoes, de zakjes en het schuimblok zoals hierboven beschreven. Gebruik

bij voorkeur een antibacterieel middel bij het wassen van de hoes.

• Spuit een desinfecterend middel op de hoes, de zakjes en het schuimblok. Vouw de

compartimenten van de hoes naar buiten zodat het middel goed in de spleten komt.

6. Garantie

Vicair biedt een beperkte garantie op productie- en materiaalfouten voor een
periode van twee (2) jaar na de originele datum van aanschaf van het kussen, onder
voorwaarde dat het kussen op normale wijze is gebruikt. Elke schade die ontstaat
door abnormaal gebruik, onjuist hanteren, reinigen of nalatigheid, valt niet onder
deze garantie. Indien er binnen twee (2) jaar na de originele datum van aanschaf van
het kussen productie- of materiaalfouten optreden, zal Vicair, naar eigen inzicht en
goeddunken, het kussen kosteloos repareren dan wel vervangen.

In geen geval zullen de garantiekosten eventuele gevolgschade dekken of de kosten
van de verkochte non-conforme producten overstijgen.
