THE SPEED BOX (lower unit) is driven by the motor. The driven member has ball
bearings which in turn are mounted on a rigid hub. Power is then transmitted to the
main drive shaft. This construction relieves the drive shaft of all side stresses and assures
permanent alignment.
Spindle gears are made of heat treated mo
lybdenum steel, mounted on splined shafts which
in turn are supported by large capacity anti-fric
tion bearings. Helical gears are used in pref-
erence
to spur gears wherever possible.
THE FEED BOX. Rapid traverse in both direc
tions to ALL units is obtained by a multiple disc
clutch, designed to disengage automatically
when the control lever is released. Feed and
rapid traverse cannot be engaged at the same
time. Rapid traverse is always in the direction
opposite to the feeds. Both units are lubricated
