Thank you for using the Mäag Audio EQ4 plug-in.
The EQ4 plug-in is Mäag Audio’s first plug-in release. Modeled in close cooperation with Brainworx, and based upon Mäag Audio’s 500 series module designed by Cliff Maag Sr. The EQ4 is the successor of the famous EQ3 by NTI, developed by Cliff many years ago.
The Mäag EQ4 is the go-to vocal EQ for David Reitzas, Dylan Dresdow, Dave Pensado, to mention just a few (Madonna, Celine Dion, Black Eyed Peas, Justin Timberlake, Barbara Streisand, etc.).
The sweepable AIR BAND® and the SUB band set a new standard for shiny and open high-end and tight low-end in both the analog and digital domain. You can hear the AIR BAND® on vocals and the master buss of countless top hits mixed by David Reitzas, Dylan Dresdow, Dave Pensado, and many others ...
The basic concept of the EQ4
The EQ4 provides unparalleled transparency and top end presence while maintaining the true natural sound behind the signal or mix.
EQ adjustments are obtained with minimal phase shift and all of the band passes including the AIR BAND® interact with each other during the summing process.
Adjusting the gain in any band will affect the overall gain of the signal. This is normal behavior and a necessary byproduct of the design.
You may use the added LEVEL TRIM (plug-in version only) to turn down overall gain to compensate for this.
Overall Gain control (hardware & software):
The summing of the band passes and the AIR BAND is an essential part of the design which ensures that the integrity of the input signal is maintained. If you turn all five band pass knobs equal amounts the EQ4 will retain the same EQ shape.
So, two clicks down on all five gain knobs gives you the same EQ curve, just lower level. This means instead of boosting one band you may also turn down the other four, and get the same result.
Or just use the LEVEL TRIM on the plug-in to reduce the overall gain (plug-in version only).
Understanding how the band passes and the AIR BAND® interact in the Mäag Audio EQ4 will help you better shape your sound.

General Tip
Start using the EQ4 plug-in on a vocal channel or a complex stereo mix to get a feel for the EQ4 and the AIR BAND®.
Presets
We have added a number of useful presets you may want to browse through as a starting point.
SUB (10Hz)
This band controls the ultra-low sub frequencies. If you need to get rid of some rumbling this is the band to turn down, and if your mix can use some really low kick or bass try increasing this extraordinary low band.
40Hz
The 40 Hz band opens up low end in mixes, makes bass drums bigger and electric bass smoother when boosted.
160 Hz
Reduce here to make voices less resonant, or add 160 Hz to get that low narrator sound. Cutting 160 Hz on instruments can help bass and bass drum punch through in rock or pop mixes.
650 Hz
Boosting this band on vocal tracks will make them more understandable, whereas cutting this band will make them less direct. Boosting this band on the master will also add some power to a mix without making it too aggressive in the high frequencies.
2.5 kHz
A very important band to control the bite of vocals, the aggression in rock guitar sounds, or the midrange in general for complex mixes.
AIR BAND® sweepable frequencies: 2.5, 5, 10, 20 & 40 kHz
Add some shiny highs to your original signal and hear how almost every signal will open up and benefit from this band. The higher frequency you select the smoother high-end sound you get.
