WHO WE ARE
Living o the grid is a statement of respect for the great outdoors. No one knows this
better than the Petersen family, who founded Unique Appliances in order to provide
innovative appliances for other passionate o-gridders who not only want to live life
simpler, but also safer, greener and in style. “My family grew up on an o-grid island.
We know how rewarding it is to disconnect from the complications of urban life and
dependency on the system,” says Kurt Petersen, Unique’s founder.
“We’ve invested heavily into our products because we want our contribution to
support how people want to live at the cottage/cabin – respectfully and carefree.”
Unique propane fridges use approximately only 1.5 lbs of fuel per day – about onehalf of outdated propane fridges. “Propane fridges are by far the most economical
form of o-grid refrigeration,” explains Petersen. Thanks to Unique’s quiet o-grid
appliances, you don’t have to contend with a noisy generator consuming fuels and
running 24/7.
“The evolution of our line of DC solar powered appliances is a testament to how much
we are invested in forwarding o-grid appliance technology” says Petersen. Beginning our journey with a few fridges, Unique now has an extensive lineup of solar DC
appliances. HIghly ecient, eco friendlly and stylishy designed, our solar lineup has
something for everyone.
Safety is a top priority at Unique, which has ushered over 70 o-grid appliances
through the CSA certification process. Unique’s many innovations include refrigerators that directly vent all combustible gases externally (and those that don’t feature
a fail-safe carbon monoxide safety shut-o valve). With respect to o-grid ranges,
“Without the standing pilot flame in our ranges, you don’t have fuel burning inside
the cottage all of the time. This both wastes fuel, and is bad for the enviroment,” adds
Petersen.
