Do not charge Rechargeable Nickel-Cadmium batteries with any charger other than the one specified in this guide. Using another charger may damage the battery or cause the battery to explode.
Rechargeable Nickel-Cadmium Batteries
must be recycled or disposed of properly!
n
Uniden voluntarily participates in an RBRC®industry program to collect and recycle nickel-cadmium batteries at the end of their useful life, when taken out of service within the United States. The RBRC®program provides a convenient alternative to placing used nickel-cadmium batteries into the trash or municipal waste stream, which is illegal in some areas.
n
Through the RBRC®program, Uniden makes it easy for you to drop off the used battery at local retailers of replacement nickel-cadmium batteries. You may also contact your local recycling center for information on where to return the used battery. Please call 1-800-8-BATTERY for information on Ni-Cd battery recycling in your area. Uniden’s involvement in this program is part of its commitment to protecting our environment and conserving natural resources.

Safety Information For Wireless Handheld Phones
Read this section before using your PCD2000A cellular telephone.
Exposure To Radio Frequency Signals
Your wireless handheld portable telephone is a low power radio transmitter and receiver. When it is ON, it receives and also sends out radio frequency (RF) signals.
In August, 1996, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopted RF exposure guidelines with safety levels for handheld wireless phones. Those guidelines are consistent with the safety standards previously set by both U.S. and international standards bodies:
ANSI C95.1 (1992) NCRP Report 86 (1986) ICNIRP (1996)
Those standards were based on comprehensive and periodic evaluations of the relevant scientific literature. For example, over 120 scientists, engineers, and physicians from universities, government health agencies, and industry reviewed the available body of research to develop the ANSI Standard (C95.1).
The design of your phone complies with the FCC guidelines (and those standards).
Antenna Care
Use only the supplied or an approved replacement antenna. Unauthorized antennas, modifications, or attachments could damage the phone and may violate FCC regulations.
Phone Operation
Normal Position
Hold the phone as you would any other telephone with the antenna pointed up and over your shoulder.
Tips On Efficient Operation
For your phone to operate most efficiently:
Extend your antenna fully. Do not touch the antenna unnecessarily when the phone is in
use. Contact with the antenna affects call quality and may cause the phone to operate at a higher power level than otherwise needed.
4
Driving
Check the laws and regulations on the use of wireless telephones in the areas where you drive. Always obey them. Also, if using your phone while driving, please:
Give full attention to driving — driving safely is your first
n
responsibility. Use hands-free operation, if available:
n
Pull off the road and park before making or answering a
n
call if driving conditions so require
Electronic Devices
Most modern electronic equipment is shielded from RF signals. However, certain electronic equipment may not be shielded against the RF signals from your wireless phone.
.
Pacemakers
The Health Industry Manufacturers Association recommends that a minimum separation of six (6”) inches be maintained between a handheld wireless phone and a pacemaker to avoid potential interference with the pacemaker. These recommendations are consistent with the independent research by and recommendations of Wireless Technology Research.
Persons with pacemakers
n
Should ALWAYS keep the phone more than six inches from their pacemaker when the phone is turned ON.
n
Should not carry the phone in a breast pocket.
:
Should use the ear opposite the pacemaker to minimize the
n
potential for interference. If you have any reason to suspect that interference is
n
taking place, turn your phone OFF immediately
.
Other Medical Devices
If you use any other personal medical device, consult the manufacturer of your device to determine if they are adequately shielded from external RF energy. Your physician may be able to assist you in obtaining this information.
Turn your phone OFF in health care facilities when any regulations posted in these areas instruct you to do so. Hospitals or health care facilities may be using equipment that could be sensitive to external RF energy.
Vehicles
RF signals may affect improperly installed or inadequately shielded electronic systems in motor vehicles. Check with the manufacturer or its representative regarding your vehicle. You should also consult the manufacturer of any equipment that has been added to your vehicle.
For Vehicles Equipped with an Air Bag
An air bag inflates with great force. DO NOT place objects, including both installed or portable wireless equipment, in the area over the air bag or in the air bag deployment area. If in-vehicle wireless equipment is improperly installed and the air bag inflates, serious injury could result.
5
Posted Facilities
Turn your phone OFF in any facility where posted notices so require.
Aircraft
FCC Regulations prohibit using your phone while in the air. Switch OFF your phone before boarding an aircraft.
Blasting Areas
To avoid interfering with blasting operations, turn your phone OFF when in a “blasting area” or in areas posted: “Turn off two-way radio.” Obey all signs and instructions.
Potentially Explosive Atmospheres
Turn your phone OFF when in any area with a potentially explosive atmosphere and obey all signs and instructions. Sparks in such areas could cause an explosion or fire resulting in bodily injury or even death.
Areas with a potentially explosive atmosphere are often but not always clearly marked. They include fueling areas such as gasoline stations; below deck on boats; fuel or chemical transfer or storage facilities; vehicles using liquefied petroleum gas (such as propane or butane); areas where the air contains chemicals or particles, such as grain, dust, or metal powders; and any other area where you would normally be advised to turn off your vehicle engine.

Changes or modifications to this product not expressly approved by Uniden, or operation of this product in any way other than as detailed by the owner’s manual, could void your authority to operate this product.
Wireless Handheld Phone Privacy
Wireless handheld phones are radio devices. Because of the inherent physical properties of radio waves, your communications can be received by radio receiving devices other than your own wireless handheld phone. Consequently, any communications using your wireless handheld phone may not be private.
Important Safety Instructions
When using your wireless handheld phone, these basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, and injury to persons.
1. Read and understand all instructions.
2. Follow all warnings and instructions marked on the product.
3. If the product is connected to a battery charger, unplug it from the wall outlet before cleaning. Use a dry cloth for cleaning without liquid aerosol cleaners.
4. Do not use this product near water; for example, near a bath tub, wash bowl, kitchen sink or laundry tub, in a wet basement, or near a swimming pool.
5. Do not place this product on an unstable cart, stand, or table. The product may fall, causing serious damage to the unit.
6. Slots and openings in the product may be provided for ventilation. To protect from overheating, these openings must not be blocked or covered. This product should never be placed near or over a radiator or heat register.
7. This product’s battery charger should be operated only from the type of power source indicated on the marking label. If you are not sure of the type of power source available, consult your dealer or local power company.
7
8. When using the battery charger, do not overload wall outlets and extension cords, as this can result in the risk of fire or electrical shock.
9. Never push objects of any kind into this product through ventilation slots, as they may touch dangerous voltage points or short out parts that could result in a risk of fire or electric shock. Never spill liquid of any kind on the product.
10. To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not disassemble this product. Take it to qualified service personnel when service or repair work is required. Opening or removing covers may expose you to dangerous voltages or other risks. Incorrect reassembly can cause electric shock when the appliance is subsequently used.
11. Refer servicing to qualified service personnel under the following conditions:
A. When the battery charger power supply cord is damaged or frayed.
B. If liquid has been spilled into the product. C. If the product has been exposed to rain or water. D. If the product does not operate normally when following
the operating instructions. (Adjust only those controls that are covered by the operating instructions. Improper adjustment of other controls may result in damage and will often require extensive repair work by a qualified technician).
E. If the product has been dropped or damaged. F. If the product exhibits a distinct change in performance.
Battery Safety Precautions Caution! To reduce the risk of fire or injury to persons
by the battery, read and follow these instructions:
1. Use only the appropriate type and size battery pack(s) specified in the owner’s manual.
2. Do not dispose of the battery pack in a fire. The cell may explode.
3. Do not open or mutilate the battery pack. Released electrolyte is corrosive and may cause damage to the eyes or skin. It may be toxic if swallowed.
4. Exercise care in handling the battery in order not to short the battery with conducting materials such as rings, bracelets, and keys. The battery or conductor may overheat and cause burns.
5. Charge the battery pack provided with or identified for use with this product only in accordance with the instructions and limitations specified in the owner’s manual provided for this product.
6. Observe proper polarity orientation between the battery pack and battery charger.

assistance with these functions. To access any of these functions , see page 26.
NAM Selection
If you regularly travel between two different cities, you can have a different telephone number (NAM) assigned to each location. If ROAM is displayed, and you are in one of your NAM locations, then you need to select the proper NAM (NAM 1 or NAM 2).
System Selection
When you re traveling, you may need to change your A/B System so you can eliminate the NO SERVICE indicator. You may also need to select a different system whenever you change the telephone number or select the programmed SID. Some systems are “wireline” (conventional telephone network), and some are “non-wireline.” Ask your service provider for more information about these systems.
The various Modes are:
A-ONLY B-ONLY ATOB BTOA HOME ONLY SID ONLY
Before changing your system, check and record the present system setting.
35
If you see NSVC on the display for more than a few seconds, the phone is an area that will not support operation in the selected Mode. You must then choose another.
Modes A-ONLY and B-ONLY are used when you travel in areas other than your home area and the cellular coverage is strong wherever you go. If the cellular phone is out of the service provider’s cellular coverage, NSVC is displayed. If you are in a system opposite to your Home System, ROAM is displayed.
HOME is used within your Home Area. It is the system you are authorized on. When you are out of your Home Area,
NSVC is displayed. ATOBand BTOAare used when you travel in areas
where cellular coverage is weak or split into several system types. This allows you to avoid switching back and forth manually, reducing the chances of missing calls. However, you may incur double roaming charges.
Roaming
Many carriers (airtime providers) make arrangements with carriers in other cities to allow use of mobile telephones in areas other than your Home area. If you are traveling in an area where cellular service is provided, and you wish to
use your cellular phone, check with your cellular service company before leaving your Home area. They will give you information about registering and operating your cellular phone in a particular area.
In some cities, depending upon your cellular service company, no registration will be required. You may dial your phone as if you were traveling in your Home area. However, if you call a number local to the area in which you are roaming, first dial the area code of the local number (no need to dial 1 first), then the rest of the phone number. Keep in mind that calls to your Home area may incur long distance charges.
Other areas will require advanced registration. with a major credit card, or may require that al long distance calls be dialed using a telephone credit card or other charge method (collect, third telephone number). Your cellular service company can give you the information before you make the trip. If that is not possible, simply dialing a call will, in many cases, provide needed information.
36
You may hear a recording (no airtime charge) that gives procedures for roaming calls and connects you immediately (during business hours) to a registration clerk. If you cannot obtain roaming services on one carrier, try switching to the other type. It is important to remember that the ROAM indicator does not mean the phone is authorized to make calls; only that a system other than the Home system is detected.
SID (System Identification)
In general, metropolitan areas are served by more that one service provider. Under certain circumstances you may be roaming in an area that has two A systems or two B systems that overlap, and you could be charged two roaming charges. To prevent this double charging, program the System Identification Number (SID) for that area and then activate the number when you are in that location. (You will get the SID form the service provider in that location.)
