Ant Facts
Q: What do ants eat and drink?
A: Ants eat almost anything. They like unsalted crackers, cake, bread, fruit, meat, and leaves, just to name a
few. Once a week, slide open the feeding port and drop in two or three pinhead size pieces of food. You will also
need to give the ants a few drops of water every 2 days. Just slide open the feeding port and drop the water in.
Please do not overfeed or over water your ants!
Q: Do the ants get enough air?
A: Yes. Your Ant Farm
®
habitat provides sucient air through the air holes.
Q: Are there both male and female ants in a colony of workers?
A: No. All worker ants are females. The only male ants are the “princes.” They mate with the queens and die
soon after mating.
Q: Do ants take baths?
A: Yes. They are very clean. Watch them closely and you will see the ants rubbing their faces with their legs.
They are cleaning themselves when they do that.
Q: Can ants “talk”?
A: Ants communicate primarily through their sense of smell. They emit chemical signals called
“pheromones” which communicate specic information to other ants. The ants will pick up on the
chemicals with their antennae which will tell them where the signal is coming from and how strong it is.
Some ants can also communicate using sound by rubbing certain parts of their bodies together much like
a cricket creates noises with its legs.
Q: Do ants work all the time?
A: No. They work very hard, but they like to play, too, and they also rest. When they play, they bump and
wrestle with each other. Sometimes two or three of them will roll a bit of grain or sand around like a ball.
Q: Will the ants build hills over the farm scene?
A: Yes. If they had a plain space, they would simply build plain hills. The farm scene gives them a more
interesting place to work, and it is more fun to watch them.
Q: Do ants really know what they are doing and why they are doing it?
A: While each ant shows signs of distinct behavior, the ants themselves should not be thought of as
individuals. Rather, an ant colony is like one large organism with many dierent functioning parts. Each ant
has a set of duties that it will follow unquestioningly for its entire life.

Before you open the tube of ants, put it in the refrigerator (not
the freezer) for about 15 minutes. This makes them less active and
much easier to put into the habitat. They will soon “warm up” to start
working.
After removing the tube of ants from the refrigerator, gently tap
the tube so they are all at the bottom of the tube.
Carefully open the tube and insert the end into the habitat as
shown and tap/shake the ants from the tube into your Ant Farm
habitat.
If the ants seem sluggish at rst, this is normal. They are tired and
thirsty from their long journey through the mail.
Slowly pour in about 6 oz. (3/4 cup or
18 cl) of clear drinking water. Sand
should be evenly damp, but not soggy.
Don’t worry if a little water leaks out.
We will mail you an ample supply of Western Harvester ants (scientic name is Pogonomyrmex, meaning “bearded ants” because they appear to have little
beards).
These large ants are excellent diggers and make impressive tunnels in the sand.
Normally, we mail the ants to you within 4 to 6 weeks after we receive your order. But sometimes we delay them because it is too hot or too cold for them.
It’s best for you to send for ants when the temperature is less than 85° F and above 32° F. If you have an outdoor mailbox, don’t let the ants stay in there for too
long. It may be too hot or cold for them!
If you want to, you can stock your habitat with ants right out of your own neighborhood. Look for large ants that cannot go through the air holes. Let the ants
crawl up onto a stick without touching them. Remove the top frame and carefully shake the ants in.
CAUTION: NEVER HANDLE ANTS DIRECTLY. Ants are easily excited and may bite or sting to defend themselves. Like some other insect bites or stings, the
bite of a harvester ant can be painful for a short time and temporary swelling may occur. For those who are more sensitive than others, it may take a little
longer for symptoms to subside. If bitten, apply ice to the aected area. Consult a physician if symptoms persist. Remember, ants are living creatures, so
treat them with RESPECT.
To Re-populate Your Ant Farm®
Welcome your new ants to a clean home. Take your habitat apart and sift the sand clean for dead ants and leftover food bits, or use new sand.
Rinse the plastic parts with water and blot dry (do not wipe – the clear parts can scratch easily).
Fill the reassembled habitat with clean dry sand and moisten as directed at the beginning of this manual.

Preguntas frecuentes de hormigas
P: ¿Qué comen y beben las hormigas?
R: Las hormigas comen casi de todo. Les gustan las galletas sin sal, pastel, pan, fruta, carne y hojas, por decir
algo. Una vez a la semana, Deslizar la tapa de arriba y pon dos o tres piezas de comida de la talla de un aller.
También les vas a tener que dar gotas de agua cada dos días. Deslizar la tapa de arriba y pon el agua. ¡Por
favor no sobrealimentes o des demasiada agua a las hormigas!
P: ¿Reciben suciente aire?
R: Sí, tu Ant Farm® hábitat provee de suciente aire por los agujeros.
P: ¿Hay ambos machos y hembras en una colonia de trabajadores?
R: No. Todas las hormigas trabajadoras son hembras. Los machos son “príncipes.” Se emparejan con las
reinas y mueren poco después de emparejarse.
P: ¿Las hormigas toman baños?
R: Sí. Son muy limpias. Obsérvalas de cerca y verás cómo se frotan la cara con sus patas. Se están limpiando
cuando hacen eso.
P: ¿Las hormigas pueden hablar?
R: Las hormigas se comunican principalmente con el sentido del olfato. Emiten señales químicos
llamados “feromonas,” las cuales dan información especíca a otras hormigas. Las hormigas van a captar
los químicos con su antena, que les va a decir de donde viene la señal y si es muy fuerte. Algunas
hormigas también se pueden comunicar usando sonidos frotando ciertas partes de sus cuerpos, como
cuando un grillo crea sonidos con sus patas.
P: ¿Las hormigas trabajan todo el tiempo?
R: No. Trabajan muy duro, pero también les gusta jugar y descansar. Cuando juegan, se pelean y se sacuden
las unas a las otras. A veces dos o tres de ellas ruedan un grano de arena como si fuera una pelota.
P: ¿Van a hacer colinas en el escenario de arena?
R: Sí. Si tuvieran un espacio llano, harían colinas llanas. El escenario de la granja les da un sitio más
interesante para trabajar, y es más divertido observarlas.
P: ¿Realmente saben las hormigas lo que están hacienda y por qué lo están haciendo?
R: Mientras que cada hormiga se comporta de manera diferente, las hormigas no se tienen que ver como
individuales. Una colonia de hormigas es como un gran organismo con muchas partes que funcionan
diferentemente. Cada hormiga tiene diferentes tareas que va a seguir por el resto de su vida.

muestra en la imagen.
Antes de abrir el tubo de las hormigas, colóquenlo en el
refrigerador (no en el congelador) por alrededor de 15
minutos. Esto las hará estar menos activas y es mucho más sencillo
ponerlas en el hábitat. En poco tiempo se “calentarán” y comenzarán
a trabajar.
Después de quitar el tubo de las hormigas del refrigerador,
golpea suavemente el tubo para que todas estén al fondo del
tubo.
Abran el tubo con cuidado e inserten la parte nal dentro del
hábitat como se muestra y golpeen/agiten a las hormigas en el
tubo hacia el hábitat de la Granja de Hormigas.
Si notan a las hormigas algo perezosas al principio, esto es
normal. Están cansadas y sedientas por el largo viaje que
realizaron a través del correo.
Llena poco a poco acerca de 6 oz. (3/4
de taza p 18 cl) de agua potable. La
arena tendría que estar húmeda, pero
no deformada.
Te enviaremos un gran suministro de hormigas cosechadoras occidentales (el nombre cientíco es “Pogonomyrmex,” que signica “hormigas barbudas”
porque parece que tengan barbas pequeñas). Estas hormigas grandes son excelentes excavadoras, y excavan túneles impactantes en la arena.
Normalmente, te enviamos las hormigas entre 4-6 semanas después de recibir tu orden, pero a veces la atrasamos porque hace demasiado frío o calor para
ellas. Es mejor enviar las hormigas cuando la temperatura es de menos de 85° y más de 32°. Si tu buzón está fuera de la casa, no dejes a las hormigas allí por
mucho tiempo ¡Puede que haga demasiado frío o calor para ellas!
Si quieres puedes poner hormigas de tu propio vecindario en el hábitat. Busca hormigas grandes que no puedan escapar de los agujeros de aire. Deja que las
hormigas trepen hacia un palo sin tocarlas, mueve la tapa de arriba y pon las hormigas adentro con cuidado.
Si las hormigas de llegan por correo, recuerda que han estado en un tubo por un tiempo y van a tener hambre o sed. Es una buena idea que pongas un poco de
agua en el hábitat antes de que lo puebles.
Precaución: JAMÁS MANEJAR A LAS HORMIGAS DE MANERA DIRECTA. Las hormigas se emocionan fácilmente y pueden morder o picar para defenderse. Como cualquier otro tipo de mordida o picadura de insecto, la mordida de una hormiga cosechadora puede ser dolorosa por un tiempo y podría
ocurrir una hinchazón de la zona temporalmente. Para aquellos que son mucho más sensibles que otros, los síntomas podrían durar más tiempo. En caso
de ocurrir una picadura, poner hielo en el área afectada. Favor de consultar a un médico si persisten los síntomas. Recuerda que las hormigas son creaturas vivientes, así que debes tratarlas con RESPETO.
Para repoblar tu Ant Farm®
Recibe a tus hormigas en una casa limpia. Desmonta el hábitat y escudriña en la arena por hormigas muertas o restos de comidas, o usa arena nueva.
Enjuaga las partes de plástico con agua y sécalas (no las limpies con un trapo o toallita, las partes claras se pueden rascar fácilmente). Monta el hábitat
de nuevo con arena limpia y humedécelo como se explicó al principio del manual.
