CHASSIS

This tape recorder features a cast aluminum chassis for durability, heavy capstan flywheel and long life oilite bearings.

CASING

The case is of wood, well reinforced, covered with an attractive synthetic black Morocco leather and fitted with a key-operated lock. The unit measures 16" wide, 14" front to back, and 7" high.

ALL TRANSISTOR

The UHER ROYAL STEREO 8000 is fully transistorized (19 transistors).

SPEAKER SYSTEM

The unit has two built-in 5 x 7" loudspeakers, one on each side of the case. The output amplifiers, also transistorized, are capable of putting out a signal of 2 watts per channel, which is more than adequate for an efficient speaker system. For optimum sound reproduction quality however the machine would normally be used to feed an external power amplifier and loudspeakers. At the slowest speed and in the echo mode the tape recorder can be used to check pronunciation in the study of languages: one has simply to say a word or phrase and hear it played back a moment later. The numerous features of this machine provide a wide range of facilities most useful in the study of language or music.

REELS AND TAPE

Maximum reel size 7", track configuration —4 tracks to international standard, up to 22 hours playing time (monaural), automatic end-of-tape stop.

DIA-PILOT -

Dia-Pilot light and pushbutton make preparation of automatic slide presentation both easy and accurate.

VU-METERS

Just above the START—STOP—PAUSE keys are two level indicating meters, one for each channel. To the right are two blue indicator lights, the upper is illuminated when the instrument is set for playback from the upper track and the lower for the second track; both are illuminated for stereo. To the left of the meters are two red lights, showing when each channel is set for recording. Thus for MULTIPLAY I, the upper red light and the lower blue light are on when the recording button is depressed. For MULTIPLAY 2 the two lights are reversed.

MASTER ON/OFF SPEED SWITCH

One master switch controls the mechanical speed selector and the ON-OFF mode. There are seven positions—four speeds with three OFF positions between. Selecting the speed also adjusts equalization for each.

VOLUME-BALANCE-TONE -

The playback level is controlled by one knob, balance between channels by a second, and tone—affecting playback only—by a third. The balance control, in monaural operations, gives normal monitoring from the input signal when in the counterclockwise position and from the tape when in the clockwise position. Two recording level controls are provided—the left one for microphone inputs and the right one for inputs from the phono receptacle on the rear apron panel.

START-STOP-PAUSE

Piano-type keys are used for the start, stop, and pause operations. In PAUSE the pinch roller is held away from the capstan so that the tape remains stationary while all other controls are in the same positions. The pause operation provides an instant start and stop action so that words can even be cut in two in recording. For instance, one can say "Micro-pause-phone" in recording, while in playback it will sound like "Microphone" without interruption.

MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH

Multifunction switch, together with an interlocked RECORD button, controls all of the electronic functions in its eleven positions.

MONAURAL RECORDING

1–4 mono record or play on upper track. 2–3 mono record or play on lower track.

STEREO RECORDING

Stereo-record or play.

MULTIPLAY

Multiplay 1—permits recording on the upper track from microphone and mixing with material from lower track.

Multiplay 2 —permits recording on lower track and mixing material already recorded on upper track.

4 DIGIT COUNTER

With pushbutton reset.

DIA-PILOT

Dia-Pilot 1 —used for recording from microphone and/or from phono record or another tape recorder on upper track as commentary for slides.

Dia-Pilot 2—after making recorded commentary on upper track, this position is used to record sub-sonic tone on lower track at points where a slide is to be changed and for playback with slide projector thereafter, with the slide changing at each point that the tone button was depressed in the second run-through.

RECORDING LEVEL CONTROLS

RECORDING BUTTON

Recording button must be depressed simultaneously with the START key to prevent accidental erasure.

ECHO REVERBERATION

Echo 1-4 permits adding delayed sound to an original recording on upper track, the amount of delay depending on the speed of the tape.

Echo 2-3 is for the same operation on the lower track.

SYN-PLAY

Syn-Play 1—used for recording on one track for later recording another signal in synchronism with the first but on a second track when the switch is turned to the Syn-Play 2 position. In this manner practically any trick type of recording can be made with no external interconnecting or switching.

SOUND HEADS

3 long life narrow-gap magnetic sound heads for monaural and stereo recordings, provide also for A (straight) and B (off-the-tape) monitoring.

A 121 STEREO TRANSISTOR MIXER

The concept of this high-quality multi-channel mixer is based on professional mixing techniques. The five straight-line controls allow continuous blending and fading of five monaural signals or two stereo signals plus one monaural signal. Each stereo channel can be adjusted individually. A direction control makes it possible to "move" a monaural source across the stereo sound field. Each input is adapted for the connection of either a microphone, a radio set, a tape recorder or a record player. It is equipped with a separate level control and can be switched on and off individually and noiselessly by means of a rocker-type switch.

SPECIFICATIONS

Five built-in two-stage transistor amplifiers • Built-in tone generator • Frequency response : flat within 20–20000 cps • Output voltage : approximately 30 millivolts • Power supply : 9 volt dry battery as used for transistor radios.
