19
Place the "Calibration sheet" included in the package between the nozzle and the print surface.
Turn the LCD’s knob. Counterclockwise the head descends and clockwise rises.
At the same time, slightly move the "Calibration sheet" back and forth until you feel a slight resistance as the paper is being pressed by the nozzle.
The properly adjusted distance between the nozzle and the print surface is when you feel a slight friction of the nozzle pressing the "Calibration sheet".
When you select the appropriate distance, press the LCD’s knob to finish the calibration process.
The printer is ready for use!
First print
The first step you need to do is to make sure the glass is clean, and then load the printer with the filament.
Step 1
Before placing the filament spool on the side of the printer, cut with a scissors or with a pliers diagonally the filament.
Page 24

Page 26
Mr Bot 280
22
Material selection Profile selection
Infill density
Support material Bed adhesion
The infill depending on the quality you select will change according to the
suggested settings. We use it to have a durable model, but also to make some filament saving.
Support is selected in cases where we have overhanging parts of the
model. It will prevent the model from sagging or printing mid-air. It will create support where needed.
Build plate adhesion will create an additional layer of material that will
provide more hold on the print surface. We use it on models with a small base or models where the base is narrower than the rest of the model, such as Vases, so that they do not detach when printing.
Let Cura to complete the slicing procedure. In the bottom right side you will find information about the printed file, such as print time and quantity of filament used. Next you can save the file. Note: the print time may be different from the one shown.
Page 27
Mr Bot 280
23
Save the file
After Cura has sliced the model, you can save it on the SD card. Otherwise, you can keep the file on your computer.
1. Connect the SD card to your computer. If the memory card has not been
used before by the computer, an installation may take place. Wait until this process is complete.
2. Press the arrow on Save to Removable Drive at the bottom right. There you
have an option to save the file to your computer or save it directly to the SD card. We recommend that you work with the SD card.
3. Securely remove the SD card from your computer, place it in your printer,
and you are ready to print.
Preparing the model
Cura has all the tools you need to prepare your model before printing. The tools are listed to the left side of the screen.
Move tool
By selecting the model automatically opens the tool. You can move it either by click and drag, or by moving the X, Y, and Z axes. Attention! If you set a negative value on the Z axis, remove part of the model base.
Scale tool
You can modify the size of the model either numerically or scale percentage, or simply pull the "handles" on the three axes. You can make Uniform Scaling or Snap Scaling.
Page 28
Mr Bot 280
24
Rotate tool
By click and drag on the circle of each axis you rotate the model at your discretion. At the same time, the rotation degrees appear next to the mouse. By selecting Snap Rotation you choose whether the model will be rotated by one or fifteen degrees.
Mirror tool
By selecting this tool six arrows will appear. Two on each axes. With this, you can mirror the model on the X, Y and Z axes.
View mode
By selecting the last tool you have the option to view the model in its solid form, such as the file. This allows you to preview the correctness of your file. Layers allows you to inspect all aspects of the print before execution. By click and drag on one of the circles you can see the whole process of printing in detail.
Page 29
Mr Bot 280

Updates and upgrades
By installing Cura on your computer, an updater was installed. You will be notified if there are new versions of your printer’s firmware or for Cura.
For updating the firmware you need to connect your printer with the USB cable that was given and follow the uBuild-3D updater steps.
Other functions
Replacing the filament
The filament replacement process is done by selecting the relevant "Change filament" menu, which can be found within the "Print" or "Quick settings" menu commands. By selecting it you will see the following options: "Change filament", "Load" and "Unload". "Change filament" makes all the "Unload" and "Load" commands in the above order in case you want to change your existing filament spool. With the “Load” option, you can load the filament if there is none, and with the "Unload" option you can remove the existing filament.
The “Change filament” steps are as follows:
1. Select the "change filament" in the main and secondary menus and wait until the temperature reaches the desired level. Then the material inside the head will be removed. The unload of the filament is completed with a single sound.
2. Pull the filament by turning the filament spool until it is completely removed from the teflon tube.
3. Install a new filament spool, cut diagonally the filament and pass it from the teflon tube until it reaches its end.
4. Press the LCD’s knob once, the sound stops. At the same time, push the material until you feel the printer motor pulls it.
5. Wait until you see material extruding from the nozzle and press the button to complete the filament change step. The material will stop extruding from the nozzle. Then the “filament change” will be completed. A short tone will be sound.
Page 30

LCD menus and various operations
In the main menu you will find the following options:
Preheat Print Quick settings Position Extruder Calibration Advanced settings
In "Preheat" you can choose the material you are interested in and preheat either the nozzle or the print surface with the pre-loaded temperatures.
The PLA/PHA pre-heat setting for the nozzle, can also be used for PETG, XT and some FLEX materials.
The HT/ABS pre-heat setting for the nozzle, can also be used for NGEN and NYLON materials.
In "Print" you can pause printing "Pause print", eg to insert a nut. You can stop printing "Stop print". And you can set the fan speed "Fan speed%".
In "Quick settings" you can increase or decrease the speed of the print with "Speed multiplier".
With "Babystepping" you can change the nozzle's distance from the print surface with minor movements. Turn counterclockwise to lower the nozzle down and clockwise to climb upwards. The babystepping correction is not saved after the end of the print.
If you have done the initial calibration but you are not completely satisfied with the result of the first layer, for example, the lines are too tight or sparse from each other, you can manually change the distance between the nozzle and the heated bed with the "Z offset".
Page 31
Mr Bot 280
27
Successful first layer
Nozzle too close
Nozzle too far
By increasing the number, we reduce the distance. We use it when we have a sparse first layer. While reducing the number, we increase the distance. We use it when we have a compressed first layer. Important! This setting cannot be performed during printing.
The "Tape selection" option allows you to choose between "Glass", "Kapton tape" and "Blue painters tape". Here you can choose the type of tape you have on the print surface and automatically change the nozzle distance from the print surface without affecting the saved distance. With the option “Glass”, you adjust the nozzle distance exactly as it was before the use of a tape.
In "Position" we can move all axes and the extruder manually as well as homing them.
In "Extruder" you are able to preheat the nozzle and/or the print surface at the temperature of your choice.
In "Advanced settings" you have to do with changes in speed, acceleration, etc. It is not recommended to change these settings by inexperienced users.

Open Source
Open Source refers the way of developing software while the code is publicly available. Its target is the development and the debugging of the code by us and any user of the software. uBuild-3D adopts the principles of Open Source, that is why it provides at GitHub ( https://github.com/ ) the code used in our printer Mr Bot 280.
Open Source philosophy:
Transparency, source code is available to anyone
Participation, anyone can participate to the development and the
debugging of the project
Co-operation, development is a teamwork
Our printer, Mr Bot 280 functions, using modified version of Marlin firmware (http://marlinfw.org/) version 1.0.2. Marlin is also an Open Source firmware and we attend the rule that dictates. Marlin is published under the GPL license. That means that any user must publish any version either modified or unmodified.
We, at uBuild-3D, do publish our source code! Users can have access to the source code of Mr Bot 280 firmware, in order to modify and use it at their printer by their own risk. Any improvements and/or fixes are welcome at uBuild-3D and we are glad to discuss them with you at our blog and email.
uBuild-3D suggests Cura Slicing Software 2.6 by Ultimaker (https://ultimaker.com/) as software for 3d model preparation. Cura is an open source software and it is redistributed and installed freely by uBuild-3D through our installer. Cura is distributed under the AGPLv3 license, which actually has no difference with GPLv3 license (http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-3.0.html), with the exception that network users are obliged to publish the source code. The source code of Cura software is available by Ultimaker. uBuild-3D, uses an unmodified version of Cura but provides the software settings of Mr Bot 280 for free.
We, at uBuild-3D, believe to the principles of Open Source and encourage users participation in order to develop and improve our products.
