3 Description

3.1 Main change:

[u-blox ID 3925] ASN.1 decoding issue.

This fix addresses a defect in the way ASN.1-encoded messages contained in information broadcast by LTE base stations are decoded by the module. Some parts of these messages are used to convey network information to the device. The failure to properly decode these messages can impact the ability of the module to establish an LTE connection.

The fix included in the maintenance release resolves the decoding defect and makes the module more robust and able to properly decode those messages.

[u-blox ID 4579] missing SNI (server name indication) feature for SSL/TLS

3.2 Other product improvements

[u-blox ID 4306/CA-089343] Memory map changed to avoid corner case when the IMEI partition is wrongly addressed by adjacent partition which improves product robustness

[u-blox ID 3654/CA-032977] Certificate serial number length extension

[u-blox ID 4722] Module boot sector has been modified to minimize the number of flash write/erase operation during the boot phase to improve module durability

[u-blox ID 4785] cipher suites supported:

• TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_128_GCM_SHA256

• TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_GCM_SHA384

As of the date indicated in the schedule below, a new firmware release will be applied to the affected products in production.

5 Customer impact and recommended action

u-blox has taken utmost care to ensure full backward compatibility to the previous versions. Successor products are pin-to-pin compatible with their predecessors.

Customer devices in the field that have an old type number or are using old firmware, and are operating normally, are at risk of failure due to future changes in the network. (Ref. [u-blox ID 3925] ASN.1 decoding issue).

It is therefore recommended that modules with the old type number be upgraded with the new firmware version as outlined in the table above. New firmware can be downloaded to the module using serial interface, USB, or over the air (FOTA).

With respect to NTT docomo certification on LARA-R220-62B, the end-device manufacturer shall discuss how to apply the proper process with their point of contact at the NTT docomo; paperwork-only activity is expected. NTT docomo approval for LARA-R220-62B product is achieved.

Implemented product changes do not affect regulatory certification (Giteki, RCM, NCC).

The estimated first shipment date is the forecasted date when a customer may expect to receive the changed product with the new type number. This is determined by the estimated date of inventory depletion on the PCN issue date. This may be affected by fluctuations in supply and demand. Consequently, although customers should be prepared to receive the changed product on this date, u-blox will continue to ship the pre-changed product until the inventory has been depleted. This may result in the pre-changed product being shipped to customers after this forecasted date.
