INTRODUCTION
The UBI Stand-Alone Concept is a ready-to-use label printing program for the EasyCoder 101 SA and the EasyCoder 201 IISA direct thermal printers, the EasyCoder 501 SA direct thermal/thermal trans- fer printer and the corresponding EasyPak models.
Utilizing the flexible UBI Fingerprint 4.0 programming language, the UBI Stand-Alone Concept offers the printing of labels, tickets, tags or strip with various layouts and fixed or variable information in the form of text, bar codes, images, lines, boxes, counters, time and dates.
The UBI Stand-Alone Program is easy to use and requires no previous knowledge in programming. The operator controls the printing via the built-in membrane keyboard, an external alpha-numeric ASCII keyboard, or a scanner, by responding to prompts in the printer's display window.
Being completely self-contained, the printer only needs a power supply. No computer connection is necessary, although the printer is prepared for the transferring of labels and layouts to, or from, a personal computer, a computer network or another printer.
This version of the UBI Stand-Alone Concept is compatible with the UBI LabelShop label-editing program for Microsoft Windows 3.1. In UBI Label- Shop, labels and layouts can easily be produced thanks to the WYSIWYG presentation. Then you can then temporarily “dock” your UBI Stand-Alone printer to the computer and download the labels and layouts, before returning to independent operation.
The EasyCoder 101 SA and EasyCoder 201 II SA both come in two versions with either a 6 dots/mm printhead for accurate EAN/UPC bar code printing, or an 8 dots/mm printhead for increased legibility and better reproduction of pictures and logotypes. The EasyCoder 501 SA is available with an 8 dots/mm printhead, or an 11.81 dots/mm printhead with suberb resolution.
Depending on printer model, a large number of options can be installed, including paper cutter, memory card adapter, interface boards, and various types of paper handling equipment. Please refer to the Technical Description for the printer model in question for further information.

HO W TO USE THIS MANU AL
This manual is intended to contain all information necessary for installing and programming a UBI Stand-Alone printer without any assistance from the distributor.
Since some information is particular for each printer model, this manual is supplemented by the User's Manual and the Technical Description for the printer model in question.
Being designed to fulfil the demands of many different applications, the UBI Stand-Alone Con- cept contains a lot of functions, some of which may not be of immediate interest to you. Furthermore, the printer's operator may not be concerned with other functions than ordering the printing of preprogrammed labels, possibly after having added certain input data, whereas the installer or system manager will require information on setup, backup, layout editing etc.
The list on the following pages contains all imaginable steps in consecutive order, from unpacking
the printer via the editing and printing of a label to the backup on a personal computer. Each step contains a reference to another manual or a page in this manual, where you can find in-depth information on the subject, should you be interested.
To facilitate the training of operators, who will not concern themselves with other tasks than printing labels or entering input data, you will find a Quick Reference Guide at the end of this manual. Cut it out and post it at the printer.
Before you start, please take a quick look at the description on how to use the various keys and at the graphic illustrations of the Stand-Alone Concept on pages 9–16. You will find some useful short-cuts and get a better overview on how the program is designed. Later on, when you have become better acquainted with the program, you can use these pages to refresh your memory or as a quick reference guide.
Information in this manual is subject to change without prior notice and does not represent a commitment on the part of UBI Printer AB.

= Optional step U/M = User's Manual T/D = Technical Description
USING THE UBI ST AND-ALONE PRINTER
■ Unpacking See U/M & T/D
Unpack the printer and check that it has not been visibly damaged during transport. As standard, all UBI Stand-Alone printers are equipped with:
• 512 kbyte RAM memory
• Real-time clock circuit (RTC)
• One serial communication channel for RS 232C.
■ Voltage Check See U/M
Check that the printer is set up for the correct voltage.
❑ Printer Modifications See T/D
If you want to make any modifications to the printer, e.g., change some straps or fit an optional interface board, do so before you connect the printer to a mains supply. Although such steps are described in the Technical Description, we strongly recommend the assistance of a skilled technician!
❑ Connection of External Equipment See T/D
Connect possible external devices, e.g., a PC, another printer, an external keyboard and/or a scanner, to the printer. A printer has, as standard, one serial communication port ("uart1:"), which can be supplemented by one or two additional ports by means of various optional interface boards.
• If you want to transfer data to or from the printer, e.g., in order to download labels and layouts from UBI LabelShop, you should reserve the serial communication port "uart1:" for that purpose.
• An external keyboard can be connected to any serial communication port, i.e. "uart1:", "uart2:" or "uart3:", provided both the port and the keyboard are set up for the same protocol.
• An external device, such as a scanner, can be connected to any free communication port, serial or parallel, provided both the port and the device are set up for the same protocol.
■ Paper Load See U/M & T/D
Load the printer with a supply of thermal transfer paper, or – in case of EasyCoder 501 SA – of paper and thermal transfer ribbon. See the User's Manual for loading instructions and the Technical Description for paper/ribbon specifications.
Important: Whenever you load a new supply of paper, perform at least one paper feed by pressing the < Feed > key.
■ Power On See page 17
Turn on the power to the printer by means of the switch on the rear plate.

❑ Setting Up the Printer See T/D & page 18
Printers delivered directly from factory are always set up the same way, as listed below. If you are not sure if the setup has been changed, or if you want to change the setup yourself, you can list the present setup and enter the printer's Setup Mode, where you can change any of the parameters.
❑ National Characteristics See page 20
As default, the printer is set up for the following national characteristics:
• Character set: Roman 8
• Time type: 24-hour cycle
• Date structure: YYMMDD (YY=year, MM=month, DD=day)
• Decimals: Decimal point If necessary, change the characteristics to better suit the country or area where you intend to use your labels.
❑ Paper Cutter Disable See page 22
If your printer is fitted with an optional paper cutter, it is automatically enabled at startup, but you can turn it off if you like.
USING THE UBI ST AND-ALONE PRINTER, cont'd.
Note: Transfer of labels and layouts from UBI LabelShop or the use of the UBI External Keyboard require the character length to be changed from 7 bits to 8 bits on the port used fore the connection.
Page 7
UBI Stand-Alone Concept
7
❑ Label-taken Sensor Enable See page 23
The optional label-taken sensor detects any label left in the feedout slot and prevents the printing of more labels until it has been removed. As default, the label-taken sensor is off, but you can easily turn it on.
❑ Setting the Clock See page 24
The printer is fitted with a real-time clock circuit (RTC) which helps the software keep record of the time and date. At delivery, the clock was set according to Swedish Mean Time (usually 1 hour earlier than GMT), but if you are going to use your printer in another time zone, you must reset the clock.
❑ External Keyboard Connection See page 26 & T/D
As an option, the printer can be fitted with the UBI External Keyboard. Before installation, you must choose a communica-
tion port to which the keyboard is to be connected. You must also set the character length to 8 bits and enable the external +5V on the communication port in question.
❑ External Device Connection See page 28
The printer can also be fitted with some other external device, like a scanner. Before it can be used, you must inform the software to which communication port this device is connected.
Now the printer is prepared and you can start the work of editing and printing labels.
■ Editing Layouts See page 29
Layouts is the generic term for the various types of fields that contain the information on the label, ticket, tag or strip. Some fields are provided with information when the layout is edited, while others just contain formatting parameters for information, that is added later. To be able to print a label, you must have at least one layout.
❑ Listing Layouts See page 66
After having edited a number of layouts, a list of all layouts in the printer's memory may be useful.
❑ Deleting Layouts See page 67
Obsolete layouts can be removed in order to save valuable memory space.

■ Editing Labels See page 69
A label is a combination of a layout and variable input data. Even if there are no input fields in a layout, you must still link it to a label before it can be printed, but usually a layout contains some fields which require input of variable information. After a label has been provided with input data, you can save it for later use.
■ Printing Labels See page 74
Single labels can be printed during the label editing process, but if you want more than one copy or a batch of several labels, you should use the label printing facility.
❑ Listing Labels See page 77
After having edited a number of labels, a list of all labels stored in the printer's memory helps you to keep record.
❑ Deleting Labels See page 78
Obsolete labels can be removed in order to save valuable memory space.
❑ Data Transfer See page 80
When you have edited a number of layouts and labels, it is recommended to make a backup to avoid the risk of losing all your work. You can take backup on a personal computer or on another identical UBI Stand-Alone printer.
There is also a convenient way of transferring data from one printer to another, so you do not have to edit the same layouts and labels on several printers.
Downloading of labels and layouts from UBI LabelShop is controlled from the PC and requires no action to be taken on the printer, beside connecting the cable and adapting the communication setup to 8 bits character length.
❑ Editing Label and Layout Files See page 85
After having copied the content of the memory from a printer to a computer, it is possible to open the file and make changes or additions, following a special syntax. Then the file can be downloaded to the same printer or an infinite number of other UBI Stand-Alone printers.
This concludes the list of features in the UBI Stand-Alone Concept. Unless you are familiar with the programming of label printers, we recommend that you concentrate on those features that are marked with a black box (
■) and follow the examples given in the explana-
tory chapters. After having become familiar with the concept, you can try out more functions according to your requirements.

Turn on the power by means of the switch on the printer's rear plate and check that the Power control lamp on the front panel comes on. While the printer loads the program, a message will appear in the display window:
UBI STAND-ALONE Please wait 1min
The first time the program is loaded, the printer will feed out two blank labels in order to adjust itself to the paper web. Then a new message will appear in the display window:
Select Mode 1:Run 2:Set
This is the Main Stand-Alone menu. When it is displayed, the printer is ready for operation. All explanations, that will follow later on, start from this menu.
As the menu implies, the program works in two modes, Set Mode and Run Mode:
• The Set Mode is used to create layouts consisting of various
types of fields, e.g. a line of text or a bar code. In the Set Mode you can also delete layouts, produce various types of lists, change the printer's setup, set up the printer for various national characteristics, set the time and date and control the connection of external equipment and the transfer of data.
• The Run Mode is used to create labels, i.e. combinations of
layouts and variable input data, that are entered in the Run Mode. You can order the printing of single labels or batches of labels in variable quantities. There are also facilities for listing and deleting labels.
Operators – who only need to select a label, add information and order the printing – do not have to concern themselves with the Set Mode, since they can perform their tasks without ever leaving the Run Mode.
STARTING UP THE PRINTER
Power On
Main Stand-Alone Menu
IMPORTANT!
The printer's RAM memory and clock require current from a battery to retain their content. The NiCd battery is automatically recharged when the printer is on. After having installed the printer, leave the power on overnight to allow the battery to become fully recharged. If the printer is turned on less than full working hours, it is recommended to leave the power on overnight at least once a week. Do not leave the printer off for several weeks (e.g. during holidays) without having made a full memory backup on a computer disk.

EXTERNAL KEYBO ARD
Connection of an alpha-numeric external keyboard makes the editing of layouts and labels a lot easier, since it relieves you of the encoding of text. If the keyboard is fitted with a display, the printer can be remotely controlled.
UBI offers an external keyboard, “UBI External Keyboard”, (article No. 1-200591-00), which is specially adapted for use with the UBI Stand-Alone printers.
The external keyboard can be connected to any serial communication port, provided that the keyboard and communication port are set up for the same communication protocol. The UBI External Keyboard uses RS 232C with baudrate 9600, no parity, 8 bits character length and 2 stop bits.
The UBI External Keyboard is power-supplied from the printer. Therefore, the external +5V must be enabled on the port, to which the keyboard is connected, see the Technical Description for the printer model in question.
If you have more than one serial communication port and intend to connect the printer to a personal computer (PC), it is recommended to reserve the port "uart1:" for the connection of the PC.
Please refer to the Technical Description for more information on communication.
Starting from the Main Stand-Alone menu, proceed as follows:

A layout is the basis for each label and may contain a mix of fixed information entered in the Set Mode and formatting instructions for input data, which is added in the Run Mode. Each layout is made up of 1 – 99 fields of various types:
• Text field i.e., one line of fixed and/or variable text or
numeric data, optionally with decimals.
• Bar code field i.e., one bar code with fixed and/or variable
input data.
• Image field i.e., one fixed image, picture or logotype.
• Line field i.e. one fixed straight line.
• Box field i.e., one fixed rectangle.
• Counter field i.e., a line of fixed text (optional) followed by
a consecutive numbering counter with variable start value.
• Time field i.e., a line of fixed text (optional) followed by
the current time (hours and minutes).
• Date field i.e., a line of fixed text (optional) followed by
the current date, or a date occurring a variable number of days later than the current date.
The editing of layouts will be explained for all types of fields, one after the other, starting from the Main Stand-Alone menu. If you follow the instructions indicated by a

As standard, the program contains a number of fonts with different i.d. numbers:
0: SW020BSN 5: MS060BMN 1: MS030RMN 6: SW060BSN 2: SW030RSN 7: SY070UBI 3: MS050RMN 8: SW080BSN 4: SW050RSN 9: SW120BSN
If you remember the number of the desired font, you can type it directly. If not, use the keys
← and → to scroll through the list and
press < Enter > when the name of the desired font is displayed. UBI's font designation gives information on some important char-
acteristics of the font:
Character 1–2 Font name abbr: MS = Monospaced
SW = Swiss
SY = Symbols Character 3–5 Font height in dots Character 6 Style: R = Regular (roman)
I = Italic
B = Bold
O = Bold italic Character 7 Letter spacing: S = Proportional
M = Monospaced Character 8 Character width: N = Normal
C = Compressed
E = Extended
❑ Scroll through the list by pressing → and press < Enter > when
the option SW060BSN appears.
H/W-magnifier
__
A font can be magnified 2×, 3× or 4× its original size in regard of height and/or width. The first digit specifies the magnification in regard of height and the second of width. Whenever possible, use a larger font rather than magnifying a smaller font, since that will improve the appearance.

As default, the printing will be in black (normal), but it is possible to change a text field to be printed with the text in the colour of the paper on a black background (inverse).
You can either accept the choice displayed on the lower line by pressing < Enter > or change the type of printing by pressing < 2 > (or < 1 > if inverse printing already has been selected).
❑ Select normal printing by just pressing < Enter >.
Fixed text 00
–––––––––––––––
Fixed text cannot be changed or deleted in the Run Mode, but you may allow more text to be appended to the fixed text when a label is edited. A fixed text may consist of max. 15 characters.
Now you must choose between two options:
• Not to enter any fixed text:
If you do not enter any text in the fixed text menu, but just press < Enter >, no fixed text will be created and the program will go directly to the “Prompt” menu, see below.
• To enter 1-15 characters of fixed text:
Fixed text must encoded, unless you have an alpha-numeric keyboard. The editing is performed the same way as in the Run Mode, see page 70. When ready, press < Enter >.
If you want more text to be appended in the Run Mode, note that the combined number of characters of the fixed text and a possible prompt for the appended text must not exceed 20, whereas the prompt itself cannot exceed 13 characters.
If no prompt is entered, the first part of the fixed text (max. 14 characters) will be displayed instead of a prompt when the label is edited in the Run Mode.
❑ Bypass the fixed text option by pressing < Enter >.
The following menu will only be displayed if you have entered at least one character of fixed text. Accordingly, it will not be displayed if you follow the layout example.

In this menu you can decide whether to allow any additional text to be appended to the fixed text in the Run Mode or not. The appending text may consist of up to 99 characters, provided there is enough room on the label. If you choose not to allow text to be appended, this text field will not be displayed at label editing in the Run Mode.
Press < 0 > to prevent, or < 1 > to allow more text to be appended to the fixed text.
Next menu will only be displayed in two instances:
• When no fixed text has been entered.
• When some fixed text has been entered and the subsequent menu “Append text?” has been answered by 1 (=Yes).
Prompt 00
–––––––––––––
In this menu you may enter a prompt that will be displayed, when the layout is used for editing a label in the Run Mode. The prompt tells the operator what kind of information to enter, but it will not be printed on the label.
The prompt may contain up to 13 characters, but when used in connection with fixed text, the total number of characters for the prompt and the fixed text must not exceed 20. E.g., a fixed text of max. size (15 characters) only leaves 5 characters for a prompt.
The text of the prompt must be encoded, unless you have an EasyCoder 501 SA or an external alpha-numeric keyboard. The counter in the upper right corner of the menu helps you to keep record of the number of characters being entered. After having entered the prompt, press < Enter >.
If you just press < Enter >, the first 14 characters of the fixed text, if any, will be displayed instead of a prompt in the Run Mode.
❑ Enter the prompt “Product?” (code: 48 82 79 68 85 67 84 31),
then press < Enter >.
The printer will beep twice and briefly flash the message “Saving” on the display, indicating that the field is loaded into the printer's memory.

• Printing a proof label: After a field has been edited and the number of next field is displayed, you may print a proof label by pressing the < Print > key. The proof label shows all fields you have edited so far. Fields that require input in the Run Mode will be substituted by dummy data, since the input still is missing.
If an error is detected, e.g., if the field does not fit within the printable area, a label with information on the error will be printed instead of the proof label.
• Making changes: If you need to change a parameter, type the number of the field and press < Enter > until the parameter in question is displayed. Enter another value or select another option and finally, press < Save > (on the UBI External Keyboard, use < F2 >).
If the print image is positioned differently from what you expected, check the Start- and Stop Adjust values and the X-Start value in the Setup Mode by printing a list of the printer's present setup as described on page 18.
• Deleting a field: To delete a complete field with all its parameters, select the field in question in the menu “Field number” and proceed according to the Info box.
• Going on: Once you is satisfied that the field is edited correctly, you may either exit the layout by pressing < Esc > , or go on and edit next field, in this case Field No. 2.

An alpha-numeric field is selected by pressing < 1 > and a numeric field by pressing < 2 >.
❑ Select numeric field by pressing < 2 >.
Decimals (0-9) 0
In this menu you can preset a decimal sign, that will be added automatically at printing to the input entered in the Run Mode. For example, if 2 decimals is selected, an input of 123400 will be printed as 1234.00 or 1234,00 depending on your choice in regard of decimal sign (see page 21). Note that possible fixed text in a numeric field can be alpha-numeric and will not be provided with any decimal sign.

Align (1-9)
The alignment specifies how the bar code will be located in relation to the insertion point (see below).
A bar code field makes up an imaginary box, that is sufficiently large to accommodate both the bar code and its interpretation, if any. A special case is EAN and UPC codes, where the first digit of the interpretation will be placed outside the imaginary box. This must be considered when positioning the bar code, since any part of the bar code extending outside the printable area will result in an error condition.

❑ Type 100 (no encoding) and press < Enter >.
Barc. magn (1–9)
The bar code magnification affects the thickness of the bars, but not the height of the bar code. Note that when the bar code interpretation is part of the code (e.g., EAN and UPC codes), it will be affected by the barcode magnification too.
❑ Type 2 (no encoding).
Barcode ratio

This menu will only be displayed if the selected bar code allows variable bar code ratio, see Info box. The bar code ratio decides the relation in thickness between the wide bars and the narrow bars in the bar code and should always be entered in two digit form. E.g., barcode ratio 31 means that the wide bars should be three times thicker than the narrow bars.
Barcode ratio

Count 1:Up 2:Down
Choose if you want up-counting (incrementation) or down-counting (decrementation) by typing < 1 > (=Up), or < 2 > (=Down).
When you link a label to a layout in the Run Mode, you will create a number of counters, depending on the number of counter fields in the layout, that are specific for the label in question. This implies that the same layout can be used for many labels, each with its own separate set of counters. The counter(s) will be incremented or decremented one step from the start value set in the Run Mode each time a copy of the label is printed. The number of digits entered in the Run Mode decides the maximum value (max. 9 digits).
For example, if the start value of an incremental counter is set to 001, the counter will go to 999 and then start over again at 000. A decremental counter will start over again when it reaches zero. Note that a counter cannot handle a negative start value.
A counter can only be reset by entering a new start value in the labelediting part of the program (see page 71).
❑ Select Up-counting by typing < 1 >.

You must choose between two alternatives:
• Not to enter any fixed text: If you do not enter any text in the fixed text menu, but just press < Enter >, no fixed text will be created and the program will go directly to the “Prompt” menu, see below.
• To enter 1-15 characters of fixed text: Fixed text is entered the same way as in a text field. When ready, press < Enter >.
In the Run Mode, you must enter a start value for the counter. Note that the combined number of characters of the fixed text and a possible start value prompt must not exceed 20 characters, whereas the prompt itself cannot exceed 13 characters.

In this menu you may enter a prompt that will be displayed, when the layout is used for editing a label in the Run Mode. The prompt tells the operator what kind of information to enter (i.e. the start value for the counter), but it will not be printed on the label.
The prompt may contain up to 13 characters, but when used in connection with fixed text, the total number of characters for the prompt and the fixed text must not exceed 20. E.g. a fixed text of max. size (15 characters) only leaves 5 characters for a prompt.
The text of the prompt must be encoded, unless you have an alphanumeric keyboard. The counter in the upper right corner of the menu helps you to keep record of the number of characters being entered. After having entered the prompt, press < Enter >.
If you just press < Enter >, the first 14 characters of the fixed text, if any, will be displayed instead of a prompt in the Run Mode.
❑ Since we have used 10 characters in the fixed text, we can only

Saving the Layout
This layout example is intended to illustrate the editing of all types of fields. It is possible to use it in any type of UBI Stand-Alone printer, hence its narrow width.
If you have followed the instructions marked by a “❑” sign in this chapter, you have now edited a layout consisting of one field of each type.
Press < Print > and a proof copy will be printed. Such a proof copy can be printed every time the display shows a field select menu.
The label will look more or less like the one below, depending on label size and printhead density. Note that some fields are provided with dummy input, since the real input must be entered in the Run Mode. If an error is detected, a label with information on the error will be printed instead of the proof label.
If the label layout looks all right and no “Error label” is printed, you can now save the layout by pressing < Save > (< F2 > on the UBI External Keyboard). Then press < Esc > to leave this layout.
If you want to change something, overwrite the displayed field number and type the number of the field you want to change. Use the < Enter > key to step to the erroneous parameter. Then enter another value or choose another option. Fixed texts and prompts can be re-edited the same way as text input in the Run Mode, see page
70. Finally, print a new proof copy and save the layout by pressing
the < Save > or < F2 > key.
❑ To return to the Main Stand-Alone menu, press < Save > or

EDITING LABELS
Before you start editing a label, there must be at least one layout stored in the printer's memory. Layouts are created in the Set Mode, or can be designed in the UBI LabelShop program and downloaded from a PC. In the Run Mode, you select a suitable layout and provide it with variable information like text and bar code input data. You can also set the start values for counters or intervals between the current date and date+ fields. The combination of a layout and possible variable input constitutes a label (LBL).
In this chapter, we will use the layout produced according to the instructions marked
❑
in the explanation of layout editing on pages
29–65. Follow the instructions marked
❑ in this chapter to create the label
illustrated on page 73.
Starting from the Main Stand-Alone menu, proceed as follows:

UBI LabelShop
The UBI LabelShop label-editing program offers an alternative way of creating labels and layouts for use with the UBI Stand-Alone printers. UBI LabelShop operates on any PC with MS Windows 3.1 and has full WYSIWYG

graphics, that allows you to see the final result on the screen. The labels and layouts can then be downloaded to the Stand-Alone printer by means of a temporarily fitted communication cable.

In this case, you have three choices:
• To print a single copy by pressing < Print >. The same menu will
remain displayed and you can still print more copies or use the “Save” or “Escape” options.
• To save the label for later use by pressing < Save >.
• To go back and select a new label for editing by pressing < Esc >.
If the selected layout do contain fields for variable input, these will be displayed one after the other, e.g.:
Product? 00
––––––––––––––––
This is an alpha-numeric text field. The prompt on the upper line tells you what type of data to enter and a cursor shows where next character will be inserted. You can always enter up to 99 characters of input data, but there must be enough space available on the label, else you cannot print it.
❑ Enter the text “Pure Honey” (code: 48 85 82 69 00 40 79 78 69

As you type the characters or character codes, the text will gradually appear in the display. A counter in the upper right corner of the menu helps you keep record of how many characters you have entered so far. Note that if the text exceeds the area available for printing, no warning is issued before you try to print the label. Then a label with an erropr message will be printed.

The example shows a Code 39 bar code field with fixed text and appending variable input. The fixed part of the input data has already been entered in the Set Mode (1 character) and a prompt is shown in the upper line. You can now enter the remaining input data (theoretically max. 99 characters).
❑ Enter a 5 digit number, e.g., 12345 (code 17 18 19 20 21).
Art. No. 05 12345
–––––––––––
Go on to next field by pressing < Enter >. Since fields No. 05–07 in our layout example do not allow any input data to be entered (image, line and box fields respectively), field No. 8 is next in turn.
Cnt value? Nu
–––––––––
The menu shows a counter field, which requires a start value of max. 9 digits. The number of digits you enter decides how far the counter will go before it starts all over again. E.g., if you want to count from 0–9, enter the start value 0 but if you want to count to 99, enter a 2digit start value, possibly with a leading zero. This menu can also be used to reset the counter after printing. After having typed the start value without encoding, press < Enter >.

Now, you are back at the first field. If you want to see what the label looks like, press the < Print > button and the printer will produce a single copy of the label (see next page).
If there is some error, e.g., some field does not fit into the printable area, a label with information on the error will be printed instead.
You can print single labels as many times as you want. The counter will be incremented or decremented one step for each label printed. However, if you want to print many copies of the same label or batches of different labels, save your label as described below and use the label printing facilities, see page 74.
Now you have three options:
1. If you do not want to use this label any more, you can press
< Esc > and return to the “Edit LBL nr” menu.
2. You can save the label by pressing the < Save > or < F2 > key.
The printer will beep and the message “Saving label texts” will flash on the display. After saving, the same menu will be displayed again and you can return to the “Edit LBL nr” menu by pressing < Esc >.
3. You can save the label under another number, e.g., after having
entered other input data, by following the instructions in the Info box. This facility corresponds to the “Save As...” function of most computer programs.

PRINTING LABELS
In the Edit part of the Run Mode, you can print single copies of the label you have selected for editing. The Print part of the Run Mode allows you to print several copies of the same label by means of a single command, or to print a batch of different labels, each with a separate quantity of copies. Using the Print part also has the advantage that you do not risk to change any input by accident.
During printing, possible counters will be incremented or decremented as specified by the layout. The first time a label is printed, the counters will start from the values specified in the Edit part of the Run Mode. When the printing is completed, the values of the counters will be saved. Next time you print the label, the counters will start from the saved values, unless you have reset the counters in the Edit part of the Run Mode.
Starting from the Main Stand-Alone menu, proceed as follows to print a single label or a batch of labels:
Select Mode 1:Run 2:Set
Select the Run Mode by pressing < 1 >.

General Information
DATA TRANSFER
A copy of specified parts of the content in the printer's RAM memory can be transferred between the printer and a host computer (e.g., a PC) or between two printers. You can choose between three alternatives:
• Copy of all labels only.
• Copy of all layouts only.
• Copy of all labels and layouts plus a copy of the printer's current setup.
Data transfer to and from a host computer is primarily intended for backup purposes, but it is also possible to re-edit individual labels or layouts in the host, as described on pages 85–89, before downloading them back into the same or another printer. Use a suitable communications program, e.g., Windows Terminal (“Receive Text File” and “Send Text File” options in the “Transfers” menu).
Data can also be transferred from one stand-alone printer to another, preferably of the same type.
Data transfer is always performed on the serial communication channel "uart1:". Make sure that both the transmitting and the receiving unit are set up for the communication protocol and are connected by means of a suitable communication cable, see the Technical Description.
The transmission is controlled from the transmitting unit after the receiving unit has been set up for reception.
IMPORTANT!
Always turn off the power to the printer
when fitting or removing
the communication cable.
Note that downloading of labels and layouts from UBI LabelShop is controlled from the PC and requires no action to be taken in the printer.

EDITING LABEL AND LAY OUT FILES
The information in this chapter is only of interest if you intend to connect your UBI Stand-Alone printer to a computer, which certainly is no necessity, but may be useful if you e.g. need to edit a lot of labels and/or layouts with similar content. Computer connection is also very useful for backup purposes.
A copy of all or some of the content in the printer's RAM memory can be transferred to a computer, as described in the previous chapter. The transfer may contain:
• All labels,
• All layouts, or
• All labels, layouts and the printer's current setup.
Regardless of the extent of the transfer, the result will be a single text file. You can receive it in by means of a communications program, e.g., Windows Terminal and name it whatever you like. Below is a printout example of a file containing the layout and the label described earlier in this manual plus a setup:

Let's have a look at the printout. First comes a layout, which is indicated by the letter “L” followed by the number of the layout. The leading %-sign indicates that this is the first layout in the file. The last layout in the file (if more than one) is indicated by an “L” followed by a double &-sign. The same principles apply to labels (indicated by “T”) and setup (indicated by “S”). The last record in the file is not appended by a double &-sign but by a triple exclamation mark (!!!).
All lines must be ended by a carriage return character.
Summing up:
L = Layout T = Label (text) S = Setup Leading % = First layout, label or setup record of its kind. Trailing && = Last layout, label or setup record of its kind. Trailing !!! = Last record in file (replaces “&&”). CR = Carriage return must end all lines.

The syntax of the label is very simple. A header record specifies the number of the label and the number of the layout. Then follows one record for each text, counter, time or date field. Bar codes consist of two records, one for the bar code and one for the interpretation. Image, line and box fields have no records in the label syntax. The first two digits specifies the record number and the following characters are the input data, that was entered in the Run Mode. Each line is ended by a carrriage return (CR).
Example:
T54L07
CR
(= Label 54, Layout 07)
01THIS_IS_INPUT1
CR
(= Record #01 with 14 char. input)
0212345678
CR
(= Record #02 with 8 digit input)
Bold characters indicate input data that can be changed.
The syntax of the setup always follows the pattern shown in the example on page 85. See Technical Description for explanations of the general setup. The last line contains the setup in regard of the special stand-alone program facilities. It is recommended not to change the setup file, but rather perform the required changes in the printer.
Example:
