USER’S GUIDE
Please read this instruction manual carefully.
When using your telephone equipment, basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, and injury to persons including the following:
1. Read and understand all instructions.
2. Follow all warnings and instructions marked on the product.
3. Unplug this product from the wall outlet before cleaning. Do not use liquid cleaners, or aerosol cleaners. Use a damp cloth for cleaning. If necessary, use a mild soap.
4. Do not use this product near water, for example near a bath tub, wash bowl, kitchen sink, or laundry tub, in a wet basement, or near a swimming pool.
5. Do not place this product on an unstable cart, stand or table. The product may fall, causing serious damage to the product.
6. This product should be operated only from the type of power source indicated on the marking label. If you are not sure of the type of power supply to your home, consult your dealer or local power company.
7. Do not allow anything to rest on the telephone line cord. Do not locate this product where the cord will be abused by persons walking on it.
8. Never push objects of any kind into this product through the cabinet slots as they may touch dangerous voltage points or short out parts that could result in a risk of fire or electric shock. Never spill liquid of any kind on the product.

The MPA-100A provides the user a means to connect a modem to most telephone lines. Simply install it between the base of the telephone and the handset.
Can be used with virtually any telephone having a modular
handset.

10. Unplug this product from the wall outlet and refer to qualified service personnel under the following conditions:
a. When the power supply cord or plug is damaged or
frayed.
b. If liquid has been spilled into the product.
c. If the product has been exposed to rain or water.
d. If the product does not operate normally by following the
operating instructions. Adjust only those controls, that are covered by the operating instructions because improper adjustment of other controls may result in damage and will often require extensive work by a qualified technician to restore the product to normal operation.
e. If the product has been dropped or the cabinet has been
damaged.
f. If the product exhibits a distinct change in performance.
11. Avoid using a telephone (other than a cordless type) during an electrical storm. There may be a remote risk of electrical shock from lightning.
12. Do not overload wall outlets and extension cords as this can result in the risk of fire or electrical shock.
13. Do not use the telephone to report a gas leak in the vicinity of the leak.

Getting Started
Connecting to the Telephone
Unpack the unit and check to make sure you have all the items that come with your MPA-100A.
1. MPA-100A unit.

Battery Installation
During modem operation, the MPA-100A requires using either the supplied 18VDC power adapter or two 9 volt batteries. The power adapter can be used with or without the batteries in­stalled.
1. If you are installing batteries, remove the battery compart­ment cover located on the bottom of the unit. (See Figure 2)
2. Press against the latch and lift the cover upwards.
3. Follow the battery installation instructions located inside the battery compartment.
4. Install two 1604A or equivalent 9 volt alkaline type batteries. Use fresh batteries to assure optimum battery life.
5. Observe correct battery polarity when installing the batteries.

button. The dicator will light confirming the batteries are installed correctly. (See Figure 1)

You can connect your computer’s modem to any telephone having a modular handset jack.
1. Plug your data/fax modem telephone line cord into the MPA-

8. The MPA-100A draws power from the batteries only when you are actually using the modem on line. Depending on the modem, battery life should exceed 30 hours.

Do not use speakerphone mode if your telephone has this feature.
1. Pick up the telephone handset and listen for dial tone.
2. The telephone handset must be left off hook for the length of the data/fax transmission. Hanging up the handset will terminate your call.

Additional Information
Some digital telephones may not support auto dialing from your modem. If this is the case, you will have to dial the number using the telephone keypad. Use the following procedure to dial data/fax calls manually.
1. If your data modem communications program is set to wait for dial tone before dialing, the be changed to

dial without waiting for dial tone. Check your modem and communications program instruction manuals for further information on this subject.
2. The above change to the modem dialing command line (initialization string) allows you to dial your call using the telephone keypad. After completing dialing, you must press the enter key on your computer keyboard to allow the modem to go off hook.
3. If your modem looks for dial tone, and your data communi­cations software does not allow you to modify this para­meter, you can still dial the telephone number manually. Let the modem dial the number as it would normally. When the modem finishes dialing, use the telephone keypad to dial the number.

Telephone Recording
Telephone conversations may be recorded by connecting a tape recorder (not supplied) to the MPA-100A.
1. When recording from the telephone, the AC power adapter or batteries are not required.
2. Telephone conversations can only be recorded from the telephone that you are using.

Care and Maintenance
Your MPA-100A has been designed to give years of trouble free service. To assure its longevity, please read the following instruct­ions.
1. Keep the MPA-100A away from heat. High temperatures can shorten the life of the electrical components as well as distort or melt its plastic parts.
2. Keep the MPA-100A free of dust and moisture. If the unit gets wet, wipe it dry immediately. Liquids can contain minerals that can corrode electronic circuits.
3. Handle your MPA-100A gently, dropping it can cause serious damage to circuitry, or the plastic case, which may result in causing it to malfunction.
4. Do not use any type of chemical or any abrasive powder to clean the cabinet. Use only mild detergents on a soft, damp cloth.
5. In the case of trouble with the MPA-100, do not attempt to repair it yourself. It is the responsibility of users requiring service to report the need for service to our Service Department. They will make the necessary arrangements for repair or replacement.

Battery Cautionary Instructions
TT SYSTEMS CORPORATION
CAUTION - To Reduce the Risk of Fire or Injury to Persons, Read and Follow these Instructions.
1. Use only the following type and size of battery: 1604A battery.
2. Do not dispose of the battery in a fire. The cell may explode. Check with local codes for possible special disposal instructions.
3. Do not open or mutilate the battery. Released electrolyte is corrosive and may cause damage to the eyes or skin. It may be toxic if swallowed.
4. Exercise care in handling batteries in order not to short the battery with conductor material such as rings, bracelets, and keys. The battery or conductor may overheat and cause burns.
5. Do not attempt to rejuvenate the batteries provided with or identified for use with this product by heating them. Sudden release of the battery electrolyte may occur causing burns or irritation to eyes or skin.
6. All batteries should be replaced at the same time. Mixing fresh and discharged batteries could increase internal cell pressure and rupture the discharged batteries.
7. When inserting batteries into this product, the proper polarity or direction must be observed. Reverse insertion of batteries can cause charging, which may result in leakage or explosion.
8. Remove the batteries from this product if the product will not be used for a long period of time (several months or more) since during this time the battery could leak, damaging in the product.
9. Discard “dead” batteries as soon as possible. “Dead” batteries are more likely to leak in the product.
10. Do not store this product, or the batteries provided with or identified for use with this product in high-temperature areas. Batteries that are stored in a freezer or refrigerator for the purpose of extending shelf life should be protected from condensation during the storage and defrosting. Batteries should be stabilized at room temperature prior to use after cold storage.
LIMITED WARRANTY
A. TT Systems warrants that the MPA-100A sold by TT Sys-
tems within the continental limits of the United States, Hawaii and Alaska, are free from defects in materials and workman­ship under normal use and service for the period of one year. This warranty is applicable only to the original purchaser of the MPA-100A, when accompanied by a sales receipt stating the date of purchase and name of the company from which purchased. This warranty is in lieu of and excludes all other warranties, expressed or implied, including any implied war­ranty of merchantability or fitness, and of any other obligation on the part of TT Systems.
B. If the MPA-100A shall prove to be defective, then TT Sys-
tems shall either replace or repair the unit at its discretion as follows:
1. At no cost to the original purchaser, within 90 days of the date of purchase.
2. From 91 days to 365 days, no cost for the repair and $7.50 for shipping and handling. You may return the MPA-100A to:

This equipment is registered with the Federal Communications Commission and is in compliance with Part 68 of the FCC Rules and Regulations.
On the bottom of this equipment is a label indicating among other information, the FCC Registration Number and Ringer Equivalence Number (REN) for this equipment. Upon request, you must provide this information to your telephone company. The REN useful to determine the quantity of devices you may connect to your telephone line and still have all of those devices ring when your telephone number is called. In most, but not all areas, the sum of the REN's of all devices connected to one line should not exceed five (5).
The MPA-100A cannot be used on coin service pay telephones.
The MPA-100A cannot be connected to party lines.
If you experience trouble with this telephone equipment, disconnect it from the telephone network until the problem has been corrected. The telephone company may discontinue service if your telephone equipment causes harm to the telephone network. In this case, the telephone company will:

warranty lasts, and / or do not allow the exclusions or limita­tions of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitations or exclusions may not apply to you.
F. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may
also have other rights which vary from state to state.
G. This warranty does not extend to any MPA-100A sold by TT
Systems which has been subjected to misuse, neglect, acci­dent, improper application, improper installation or to use in violation of the instructions furnished by TT Systems.
H. This warranty does not extend to, or apply to any unit which
has been repaired or altered by any persons who have not been expressly approved by TT Systems.
I. TT Systems shall not be liable for any special or consequen-
tial damages or for loss or expense directly or indirectly aris­ing from the use of the MPA-100A or any inability to use it either separately or in combination with other equipment or products or from any other cause.
J. TT Systems reserves the right to make changes in the design
of the MPA-100A and to make additions or improvements to its MPA-100A without incurring any obligation to modify any units previously sold.
