The ‘Long Bed’ Graduate lathe has been designed to fulfil the demanding requirements of
amateur, professional and education needs,
L.R.E. carry out major refurbishment in our well
equipped workshops to bring these lathes up to
an extremely high standard.
Heavily constructed in cast iron, with all the
electric's and drive housed within the main pedestal, together with it’s generously proportioned
main spindle and bearings, make for an exceptionally robust, quiet and vibration free machine.
When the lathe is fitted with the L.R.E. ‘Variturn’
speed control system, it enhances the usability
of the lathe many fold and makes an already
superb lathe into an outstanding one, with three
choices of speed range covering 100-2850 rpm.
Reversing and two selectable controlled
acceleration/deceleration rates are standard
features.
Controlling the lathe couldn't be easier, via the
conveniently positioned and user friendly
operating panel, featuring Start, Stop, Direction
selector buttons, and rotary speed selection dial,
and the ramp speed selector. Additional foot or
hand held controls are also available at extra
cost.
L.R.E. are also able to offer custom modifications to the lathe including increased inboard
and/or outboard capacities up to 640mm
diameter, double right hand main spindles, etc.
Each lathe is supplied with a set of standard
equipment. A full range of accessories are
available for this machine from both our own
manufacture and those of other major tool
Suppliers and manufacturers, please ask for a

Maintenance & Lubrication
SAFETY NOTE - SWITCH OFF ELECTRICAL SUPPLY TO MACHINE BEFORE CARRYING OUT
MAINTENANCE.
LUBRICATION
Oil tailstock screw and lightly smear the spindle with oil occasionally.
Oil motor platform turnbuckle screws and pivot points occasionally.
Clean and oil the bed ways and outer rest arm top face frequently.
Main Spindle is fitted with sealed bearing’s and require no lubrication
Recommended Lubricants: Light machine oil or 3 in 1 type lubricant
MAINTENANCE
1. To Replace Bearings
Remove any faceplates or chucks (A), slacken tension on vee belt, release set screws (B) and (H)
place block of wood (D) in the position shown and withdraw spindle and front bearing in direction
of arrow 'X', the pulley will slide off the spindle when it abuts against the block of wood (D). if any
difficulty is experienced the spindle may need tapping though with a copper/hide hammer so as to
ensure no damage is caused to the spindle and threads.
Remove bearing carrier (G) complete with rear bearing in direction of arrow 'Y', if bearings are
tight in housings release set screws (C) and (J) and lightly tap out spacers (E) and (F) in the direction ’Y’ until the bearings are ejected.
To remove rear bearing from its carrier use a pin punch through the ejector holes (K) then fit new
bearing.
Re-fit front spacer (E) and tighten set screw (J) in dimple. Re-fit rear spacer (F). Do not as yet fully
tighten set screw (H) just nip up. Re-fit spindle complete with new front bearing and vee belt.
Re-fit rear bearing and carrier, up to the shoulder on spindle and tighten set screw (B). Adjust rear
spacer (F) to remove side play then fully tighten set screw (H). Care should be taken with this final
adjustment to prevent overloading of bearings. Line up head pulley with dimple in spindle and
tighten set screw (C).
3. To Remove End Play
Release set screw (H) and adjust spacer (F) slightly in direction of arrow 'Y' then re-tighten screw
(H). Care should be taken to prevent overloading of bearings.
4. To Replace Vee Belt
Remove faceplate (A) and release set screws (B) and (H).
Slacken tension on vee belt.
Withdraw spindle in direction of arrow 'X' sufficiently to allow vee belt to be replaced. Replace
spindle, line up head pulley with dimple in shaft and tighten set screws (B) and (C).
Tension vee belt.
5. To Remove Faceplates which have become locked on Spindle
Take two pieces of steel bar (L) ¾" x ½“ section 7 ¼” long and drill two 13/32" dia holes in each at
5. 9/16" centres. Clamp these blocks onto the faceplate by means of two 3/8" dia nuts and bolts.
With the spanner on the flats of the spindle, and locating against the main body casting, strike the
steel clamps with a hammer, on the appropriate end to release the faceplate. (Don’t forget the rear
spindle is a left hand thread so tap in direction ‘M’)
NOTE: Faceplates, driver plates and chucks should be removed from the spindle at regular inter-
vals to reduce risk of jamming.
Before attaching face plates, the spindle nose should be cleaned and well-lubricated to
prevent seizing.
