Thank you for ordering the Troy-Bilt®Sweep Cultivator for the PTO Horse Model
Tiller. To ensure the safe and proper assembly of this product, please read and
follow all instructions carefully. If you have any questions or problems concerning
the Sweep Cultivator, contact our Service Department using the information
provided on Page 4.
The solution to your cultivating problems is the
elimination of small, emerging weeds (up to 6-8" tall)
from your garden. You can remove these small weeds
easily by cultivating the top 1" or so of soil, using the
Troy-Bilt Sweep Cultivator. Cultivating to a depth of no
more than 1" lessens the chance of damage to the
roots of adjacent plants. Avoid digging deeper than 1"
to prevent bringing new weed seeds to the surface and
to prevent the drying out of the soil through exposure
to the air. The Troy-Bilt Sweep Cultivator is also ideal
for cultivating dry, dusty soil or clay while keeping soil
disturbance to a minimum. The Sweep Cultivator
blade skims beneath the soil without turning the soil
over.
Because the blade of the Sweep Cultivator is
mounted directly behind the wheels of your tiller, you
can precisely guide the Sweep Cultivator down a
garden row by aiming the whole tiller toward the far
end of the row, instead of steering by looking down at
the blade. Because the Sweep blade is slightly
narrower than the distance between the outer edges of
the wheels, you will not damage plants in adjoining
rows.
Follow instructions on the following pages for
assembling and using the Sweep Cultivator properly.
You will find the Sweep Cultivator to be one of the
most useful gardening tools.

CHECK YOUR PARTS
Be sure to check the contents of your kit to make
sure that it contains all of the following parts.
TOOLS NEEDED
One 5/8" Open-end Wrench
One 11/16" Socket Wrench or Adjustable Wrench
DO YOU HAVE A TROY-BILT TOW HITCH?
To use the Sweep Cultivator, the Sweep
Cultivator must be connected to the Tow Hitch
attachment on the Power Unit. See Photo 2 on
Page 1. The two hitch-pins keep the Sweep on a
straight-ahead course. If you do not have a
Troy-Bilt Tow Hitch and the literature “How to
Install the Tow Hitch,” order these items by
contacting the Parts Department at the phone
number given on Page 4.
ASSEMBLY PROCEDURE
Step 1: Assemble Mounting Brackets.
A. Align the slot in the channel mounting bracket with
the two holes on the back of the C-shaped bracket.
See Photo 4. First, place a 7/8" lockwasher on each
the the 1-3/4" bolts, and add a 7/16" flat washer.
Place one of the bolts approximately 1" from the top of
the slot, pass it through the slot, and thread it into the
C-shaped bracket. The head of the bolt should be on
the outer side of the channel mounting bracket. Install
the second bolt the same way in the remaining hole in
the C-bracket.
B. Using a 5/8" open-end wrench, alternately tighten
the two bolts securely. Neither of these bolts requires
a nut.
Step 2: Mount Sweep To Bracket
Assembly.
A. Place the bracket assembly (the channel bracket
and C-shaped bracket which you have just
assembled) into the concave channel of the Sweep
flange. Align the holes in the channel mounting
bracket with the holes in the flange. See Photo 5.
Place a 2" plow bolt through each hole in the Sweep
flange with the heads toward the front of the V-shaped
Sweep.

ATTACH SWEEP CULTIVATOR TO
TOW HITCH
As previously mentioned, the Sweep Cultivator
connects to the Tow Hitch Attachment on the Power
Unit. Attach the Sweep Cultivator to the Tow Hitch as
follows:
Step 1: Fit the C-shaped mounting bracket over the
top and bottom of the Tow Hitch and align the holes in
the hitch with those in the mounting bracket. See
Photo 8.
B. Slip a 7/16" lockwasher and then a 7/16" hex nut
onto each of the plow bolts. Using an 11/16" socket
wrench or an adjustable wrench, tighten bolts
alternately until both are secure. See Photo 6.
Step 2: Insert the two hitch pins through the outer
holes in the bracket and Tow Hitch. Placing both pins
in the outside holes keeps the Sweep straight. See
Photo 9.
C. Check carefully to make sure that all hardware is
secure. When fully assembled, your Sweep Cultivator
should look like the one in Photo 7.

Step 3: The Sweep Cultivator is now attached to the
Tow Hitch which, in turn, is connected to the Power
Unit. Your Sweep Cultivator is now ready for use.
USE OF THE SWEEP CULTIVATOR
The Troy-Bilt Sweep Cultivator slices cleanly
through the soil and is adjustable to various digging
depths. You control the depth by raising or lowering
the handlebars as you move the tiller forward, or by
loosening the bolts and raising or lowering the Sweep
in the channel. In this way, the depth can be set to
the individual needs of your garden and your soil
although, as was mentioned, the usual adjustment is
about 1" below ground level.
In parts of your garden which are not
Hiller/Furrrower areas, the Sweep Cultivator, used in
fast gear, can cultivate without raising dust and
without causing a loss of vital moisture from the soil.
For optimum control, walk directly behind the
Sweep Cultivator and hold the handlebars with both
hands. To cross a lawn, tip the tiller handlebars
upward so that the Sweep blade does not touch the
ground. Your cultivator cuts weeds off 1" or so
beneath the surface of the soil. The top of the weed
falls off and dies in the sunlight so that the remaining
root does not usually produce new growth. Weeds
smaller than 2-3", and those which have barely
emerged from the soil, are shocked by the movement
of the soil and the breakage of the root hairs. Even
though they are not cut directly, this impact often
stops further growth.
