INTRODUCTION
Tripp Lite External Battery Packs have output voltages of either 36 volts (BP36V14-2U), 48 volts (BP48V24-2U) or 72 volts (BP72V12-2U) and are designed for use with various Tripp Lite UPS systems equipped with external battery pack connectors. When used with the appropriate Tripp Lite UPS, they meet UL standard 1778. The BP48V24-2U may also be suitable for use with 48V DC input telecommunications equipment.
PACKING LIST
• Battery Pack
• BP48V24-2U only: Alternate Front Panel
• 4 Mounting Ears (2 black, 2 grey)
• 2 Mounting Extensions
• Screws
• Wing Bolts
• Locking Nuts
• Flat Washers
SAFETY
• Use caution when lifting Battery Packs. Because of the considerable weight of all Rackmount Battery Packs, at least two people should assist in lifting and installing them.
• 36V and 72V Battery Packs and UPS systems use identical power cables and plugs; make certain that your Battery Packs and UPS use the same DC voltage before connecting them.
• Suggested mounting procedures are for common rack types and may not be appropriate for all rack configurations. User must determine the fitness of rack- and wallmount hardware and procedures before mounting.
• When connecting multiple Battery Packs to a single UPS, the Battery Packs should be approximately the same age.
• It is normal for sparks to occur inside external battery connectors during final battery connection.
• Do not unplug external batteries from the UPS while the UPS is operating on battery power, due to the possibility of dangerous arcing.
• There are no user-serviceable parts inside the Battery Packs. Do not open the Battery Packs for any reason.
• Battery Replacement must be performed by factory authorized service personnel. Because batteries present a risk of electrical shock and burn from high short-circuit current, observe proper precautions. Unplug the Battery Pack from the UPS before performing battery replacement. Do not short or bridge battery terminals with any object. Use tools with insulated handles. Remove metal objects such as watches and rings before working with batteries. Do not open batteries. Replace batteries only with sealed lead-acid batteries of the same number, type, voltage and amp hour capacity.
• Do not dispose of batteries in a fire. The batteries are recyclable. Proper disposal of batteries is required; refer to your local codes for disposal requirements. In the USA only, you may call 1-800-SAV-LEAD (1-800-728-5323) for complete recycling information.

Color Selection (BP48V24-2U Only)
The BP4824-2U can be configured to match black or grey equipment. To match grey equipment, mount the grey mounting ears in front. To match black equipment, switch the grey front panel on the unit for the black front panel included, and mount the black mounting ears in front. (See mounting instructions for exact mounting ear placement.)
SUGGESTED RACKMOUNT INSTALLATION FOR 4-POST ENCLOSURES
1) Measure the depth of your rack from the outside surface of the front mounting rail to the outside surface of the rear mounting rail.
2) On both sides of your Battery Pack, connect both front mounting ears (A) with four screws and flat washers each (B) so their mounting surfaces are even with the front of your Battery Pack's metal case. Connect the mounting extensions (C) to the Battery Pack using four screws and flat washers (D) each. Connect the rear mounting ears (E) to the mounting extension using four wing bolts and flat washers (F) and locking nuts (G) each—the wing bolts should be left only finger-tight so that they may be adjusted later. Adjust the mounting extensions and rear mounting ears so that the distance from the front mounting ears to rear mounting ears matches the depth of your rack.
3) Have one or more assistants lift the Battery Pack and hold it in position until this step is complete. Insert the Battery Pack into its intended rack space, pressing its rear mounting ears (H) inward so that they fit past the rack's front (J) and rear (K) mounting rails, until the mounting surfaces of the front ears (L) meet the outside of the rack's front rails. Adjust the rear mounting ear until the mounting surface of the rear ears meet the outside of the rear rails, then tighten the wing bolts holding the mounting ears to the mounting extensions. Connect the front mounting ears of the Battery Pack to the rack's front mounting rails with two screws and flat washers (M, user supplied: match to the rails' threads) on each side. Connect the rear mounting ears to the rear mounting rails of the rack with two screws and flat washers (N, user supplied: match to the rails' threads) on each side.

SUGGESTED INSTALLATION FOR 2-POST RACK ENCLOSURES
1) On both sides of your Battery Pack, connect one mounting ear (A) with four screws and flat washers (B) to the Battery Pack's middle four mounting holes. The mounting surface of the ear should face the front of the Battery Pack.
2) Have one or more assistants lift the Battery Pack and hold it in position until this step is complete. Insert the Battery Pack into its intended rack space, until the mounting surfaces of its ears (C) meet the outside of the rack's rails (D). Connect the mounting ears to the rails with two screws and flat washers (user supplied, E) on each side.
SUGGESTED WALLMOUNT INSTALLATION
1) On both sides of your Battery Pack, connect one mounting ear (A) to the Battery Pack's four front mounting holes and another mounting ear (B) to the four rear mounting holes, using four screws and flat washers (C) with each ear. The mounting surfaces of the ears should face up and out, and the bottom of the ears should be flush with the bottom of the Battery Pack.
2) Have one or more assistants lift the Battery Pack and hold it in position until this step is complete. Move the Battery Pack to its intended wall space and hold it so that the mounting surfaces of its ears (D) are pressed to the wall. Attach the ears to the wall with two screws and flat washers (user supplied, E) each.

SUGGESTED TOWER INSTALLATION
1) On one side of your battery pack, connect one mounting ear (A) to the Battery Pack's four front mounting holes and another mounting ear (B) to the four rear mounting holes, using four screws and flat washers (C) with each ear. The ends of the mounting ears should stick out on opposite sides of the Battery Pack.
2) Have one or more assistants lift the Battery Pack and hold it in position until this step is complete. Move the Battery Pack to its intended floor space and hold it so that the mounting surfaces of its ears (D) are level with the floor. Bolt the ears to the floor with two screws and flat washers (user supplied, E) each. Without bolting the Battery Pack in position, there is a danger of tipping.
Your Battery Pack may be positioned safely in an upright position without mounting screws with the addition of Stabilizer Feet (part #300842), sold separately from Tripp Lite.
BATTERY PACK CONNECTION
BP48V24-2U Battery Packs have a blue 175-amp polarized plug (A) on an output cord permanently connected to the rear panel. Simply plug the output cord directly into the external battery connector of your UPS. (See your UPS manual for external battery connector description and location.) Note that only one of these Battery Packs is generally connected to a UPS at one time. For longer runtime, you may connect two to a single UPS using a 48V YAdapter Cable sold separately by Tripp Lite, or use one or more BP48V60-3U Tripp Lite Battery Packs with daisy-chain capability.
BP36V14-2U or BP72V12-2U Battery Packs
feature dual input/output receptacles on their rear panels (B) . To connect to a UPS, insert one end of the detachable power cable (C) into either plug on the rear of the Battery Pack and the cable's other end into the external battery connector of your UPS. (See your UPS manual for external battery connector description and location.) To connect multiple Battery Packs to a single UPS for greatly increased runtime, connect the output of the first Battery Pack to the UPS's external battery connector, then "daisy chain" the others: connect an input/output plug on the second Battery Pack to an input/output plug on the first, a plug on third to a plug on the second and so on. Note that multiple Battery Pack arrays will provide longer runtimes, but will also require longer recharge times.

TROUBLESHOOTING
There is a fuse array inside the Battery Packs. If a heavy overload or short circuit is encountered, a fuse will open (blow). A Battery Pack with a blown fuse will deliver no output voltage at any load. A qualified technician must replace the fuses. Contact Tripp Lite Customer Support for additional information.
MAINTENANCE
Rackmount Battery Packs require no maintenance but should be kept dry at all times. Avoid installation in locations with high heat and/or humidity. The Battery Packs should be kept fully charged by being connected to an active UPS system, not left in a depleted condition. Batteries left in a discharged state will suffer a permanent loss of capacity.
INTERNAL BATTERY REPLACEMENT
The batteries in the Battery Packs will eventually wear out and be unable to provide adequate backup times. The batteries should only be replaced by factory authorized service personnel. Tripp Lite offers an exchange program for North American customers wherein they may exchange worn-out Battery Packs for new ones at a price comparable to the cost of individual battery replacement. For more details, call Tripp Lite at (773) 869-1234.
STORAGE
Disconnect your Battery Pack's power cable before storing. If you plan to store your Battery Pack for an extended period of time, fully recharge its batteries every three months by connecting it to a UPS that is connected to AC input for 4-6 hours.
SERVICE
If returning your Battery Pack to Tripp Lite for service, please pack it carefully in its ORIGINAL PACKING MATERIAL that came with the unit. Enclose a letter describing the symptoms of your problem. If the UPS is within the 2-year warranty period, enclose a copy of your sales receipt.
