Toyota encourages you and your family to take the time to
read Section 1- 3 of this Owner’s Manual carefully. In
terms of helping you understand how you can receive the
maximum benefit of the occupant restraint systems this
vehicle provides, Section 1- 3 of this Owner’s Manual is
the most import ant sect ion for you and your family to read.
Section 1- 3 describes the function and operation concerning seats, seat belts, SRS airbags and child restraint systems of this vehicle and some potential hazards you
should be aware of. These systems work together along
with the overall structure of this vehicle in order to provide
occupant restraint in the event of a crash. The effect of
each system is enhanced when it is used properly and
together with other systems. No single occupant restraint
system can, by itself, provide you or your family with the
equal level of restraint which these systems can provide
when used together. That is why it is important for y ou and
your family to understand the purpose and proper use of
each of these systems and how they relate to each other.
The purpose of all occupant restraint systems is to help
reduce the possibility of death or serious injury in the
event of a collision. None of these systems, either individually or together, can ensure that there is no injury in the
event of collision. However, the more you know about
these systems and how to use them properly, the greater
your chances become of surviving an accident without
death or ser ious injury.
Seat belts provide the primary restraint to all occupants of
the vehic le, and every occupant of the vehicle shoul d wear
seat belts properly at all times. Children should always be
secured in child restraint systems that are appropriate for
their age and size. SRS (Supplemental Restraint System)
airbags are, as their names imply, designed to work with,
and be supplemental to, seat belts and are not substitutes
for them. SRS airbags can be very effective in reducing
the ris k of head and chest inj uries by prev enting cont act of
the head and chest wit h interior port ions of the vehic le.
iii

’05 Corolla_U (L/O 0409)
In order to be effectiv e, the SRS airbags must deploy wit h
tremendous speed. The rapid deployment of the SRS airbags makes the SRS airbags themselves potential sources
of serious injury if an occupant is too close to an airbag,
or if an object or some part of his or her body has been
placed between the occupant and the airbag a t the t ime of
deployment. This is just one example of how the instructions in Section 1- 3 of this Owner’s Manual will help ensure proper use of the occupant restraint systems, and
increase the safety they can provide to you and your family in the ev ent of an accident.
Toyota recommends you to read the provisions in Section
1- 3 caref ully and refer to them as needed during your ti me
of ownershi p of this vehic le.
Event data recorder
Your vehicle has computers that monitor and control certain aspects of your vehicle. These computers assist in
driving and maintaining optimal vehicle performance. Besides storing data useful for troubleshooting, there is a
system to record data in a crash or a near car crash
event. This is called an Event Data Recorder (EDR).
The SRS airbag sensor assembly contains the EDR. In a
crash or a near car crash event, this device records some
or all of the following information:
Engine speed
Whether the brake pedal was applied or not
Vehicle speed
To what extent the accelerator pedal was depressed
Position of the transmission selector lever
Whether the driver and front passenger wore the seat
belts or not
Driver’s seat position
Front passenger’s occupant classification

Leak detection pump
This pump performs fuel evaporation leakage check. This
check is done approximately five hours a fter the engine is
turned off. So you may hear sound coming from underneath the trunk for several minutes. It does not indicate a
malfunction.
1. Master keys (black)—
These keys work in every lock. Your
Toyota dealer will need one of them to
make a new key with a built- in transponder chip.
Since the doors and trunk lid can be
locked without a key, you should always carry a spare master key in case
you accidentally lock your keys inside
the vehicle.
’05 Corolla_U (L/O 0409)
2. Sub key (gray)—
This key will not work in the trunk.
To protect items locked in the trunk
when using valet parking, leave the
sub key with the attendant.
A transponder chip for engine immobilizer
system has been placed in the head of
the master and sub keys. These chips are
needed to enable the system to function
correctly, so be careful not to lose these
keys. If you make your own duplicate key,
you will not be able to cancel the system
or start the engine.
NOTICE
When using a key containing a transponder chip, observe the following
precautions:
When starting the engine, do not
use the key with a key ring resting
on the key grip and do not press
the key ring against the key grip.
Otherwise the engine may not start,
or may stop soon after it starts.
12
2005 COROLLA from Sep. ’04 Prod. (OM12891U)
When starting the engine, do not
use the key with other transponder
keys around (including keys of other vehicles) and do not press other
key plates against the key grip.
Otherwise the engine may not start,
or may stop soon after it starts. If
this happens, remove the key once
and then insert it again after removing other transponder keys (including keys of other vehicles) from the
ring or while gripping or covering
them with your hand to start the
engine.
’05 Corolla_U (L/O 0409)
Do not bend the key grip.
Do not cover the key grip with any
material that cuts off electromagnetic waves.
Do not knock the key hard against
other objects.
Do not leave the key exposed to
high temperatures for a long period,
such as on the dashboard and hood
under direct sunlight.
Do not put the key in water or
wash it in an ultrasonic washer.
Do not use the key with electromagnetic materials.

KEY NUMBER PLATE
Your key number is shown on the plate.
Keep the plate in a safe place such as
your wallet, not in the vehicle.
If you should lose your keys or if you
need additional keys, duplicates can be
made by a Toyota dealer using the key
number.
We recommend writing down the key number and storing it in a safe place.

The engine immobilizer system is a
theft prevention system. When you insert the key in the ignition switch, the
transponder chip in the key’s head
transmits an electronic code to the vehicle. The engine will start only when
the electronic code in the chip corresponds to the registered ID code for
the vehicle.

The system is automatically set when the
key is removed from the ignition switch.
The indicator light will start flashing to
show the system is set.
If any of the following indicator conditions
occurs, contact your Toyota dealer.
The indicator light stays on except
when the Toyota vehicle intrusion
protection system is setting or activating. (See “Toyota vehicle intrusion
protection system (TVIP)” on page 27
in this Section.)
The indicator light does not start flash-
ing when the key is removed from the
ignition switch.
The indicator light flashes inconsistent-
ly.
Inserting the registered key in the ignition
switch automatically cancels the system,
which enables the engine to start. The
indicator light will go off.
For your Toyota dealer to make you a
new key with built- in transponder chip,
your dealer will need your key number
and master key. However, there is a limit
to the number of additional keys your
Toyota dealer can make for you.
If you make your own duplicate key,
you will not be able to cancel the system or start the engine.
NOTICE
Do not modify, remove or disassemble the engine immobilizer system. If any unauthorized changes or
modifications are made, proper operation of the system cannot be guaranteed.

nobody around the power windows.
You must also make sure the
heads, hands and other parts of the
bodies of all occupants are kept
completely inside the vehicle. If
someone’s neck, head or hands get
caught in a closing window, it
could result in a serious injury.
When anyone closes the power windows, make sure he or she operates the windows safely.
When small children are in the ve-
hicle, never let them use the power
window switches without supervision. Use the window lock switch to
prevent them from making unexpected use of the switches.
Be sure to remove the ignition key
when you leave your vehicle.
Never leave anyone (particularly a
small child) alone in your vehicle,
especially with the ignition key still
inserted. Otherwise, he/she could
use the power window switches and
get trapped in a window. Unattended person (particularly a small
child) can be involved in a serious
accident.

TESTING THE SYSTEM
You can check the system operation as
follows.
1. Open all the windows.
2. Set the system as described in
“SETTING THE SYSTEM”.
3. Unlock the driver’s door with the inside
lock knob. The system should activate
and the alarm should sound.
4. Stop the alarm as described in “Stopping the alarm”.
5. Repeat steps 2 to 4 for the other

Hood
To open the hood:

3. Hold the hood open by inserting the
support rod into the slot.
To insert the support rod into the slot,
move it straight up. If it is moved to the
side or toward the inside of the vehicle,
it may become detached.
Before closing the hood, check to see that
you have not forgotten any tools, rags,
etc. and return the support rod to its
clip—this prevents rattles. Then lower the
hood and make sure it locks into place.
If necessary, press down gently on the
front edge to lock it.
CAUTION
After inserting the support rod into
the slot, make sure the rod supports
the hood securely from falling down
on to your head or body.
NOTICE
Be sure to return the support rod to
its clip before closing the hood. Closing the hood with the support rod up
could cause the hood to bend.

This indicates that the fuel filler door
is on the left side of your vehicle.
1. To open the fuel filler door, pull the
lever up.
When refueling, turn off the engine.
CAUTION
Do not smoke, cause sparks or al-
low open flames when refueling.
The fumes are flammable.
When opening the cap, do not re-
move the cap quickly. In hot weather, fuel under pressure could cause
injury by spraying out of the filler
neck if the cap is suddenly removed.
2. To remove the fuel tank cap, turn
the cap counterclockwise by 90 degrees (to the pressure point 1), and
then turn it an additional 30 degrees
(to point 2). Pause slightly before
removing it.
It is not unusual to hear a slight swoosh
when the cap is opened.
