This is to inform you that there are two useful pieces of software that can be used to
troubleshoot and diagnose the SC-1 system board and Fax/Modem.
One of these software tools is called DDIAG106.ZIP and can be downloaded from
http://www.bcmgvc.com/. In order to download this file, you must be a legal owner of a BCM
motherboard. This is the type of motherboard installed on the DSE manufactured SC-1. The
software is DOS based and can be run from a DOS bootable floppy diskette and does not
require a monitor or keyboard. Complete documentation is included with the software in a
file called DOSDIAG.HLP. This is an ASCII file and not a Windows help file.
The second software tool is provided by MultiTech and is distributed to you. It is a utility that
diagnoses the fax/modem hardware in the SC-1. It does not perform communication tests.
The distribution files are:
MULTI.EXE The executable utility
RELEASE.TXT User instructions/release notes
AUTOEXEC.BAT To be placed in a diskette and contains appropriate command line
The contents of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file are:
@Echo off
Rem ** run ZPX test for 3 cycles on comm port 2
Multi -h -r 3 -c 2 ZPX
@Echo on
@Echo ^G
@Echo ^G
@Echo ^G
@Echo ^G
@Echo ^G
where ^G is the control character that represents a beep. One way to enter this character is
by using the DOS Edit text editor. Press CTRL + P followed by CTRL + G.
Based on that command line, the utility will
a. detect the presence and version of the hardware
b. run the test 3 times
c. use COM port 2 for the tests (SC-1 configuration)
For full explanation on the command line parameters that can be added in the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file, please refer to RELEASE.TXT.
Installation Instructions and Use
Create a DOS, Win95 or Win98 bootable diskette. Do not write-protect the diskette.1.
Copy the files MULTI.EXE and AUTOEXEC.BAT on to the diskette2.
Shutdown the SC-13.
Insert the diskette into the SC-1's floppy drive and boot the SC-14.
Wait until five consecutive beeps sound and there is no floppy drive activity5.
Remove diskette from the floppy drive6.
Place the diskette in a workstation's floppy drive7.
Open the file MULTI.LOG using any text editor. The file was created by the utility8.
Inspect the contents of the file. They should be similar to the following:9.
Thu Nov 11 11:59:35 1999
ZPX Test: PASS (Port = 2, Cycles = 3)
If you run the test multiple times, the results will be appended inside the MULTI.LOG file.
For example:
Thu Nov 10 11:59:35 1999
ZPX Test: PASS (Port = 2, Cycles = 3)
Thu Nov 11 12:09:22 1999
ZPX Test: PASS (Port = 2, Cycles = 3)
If the indication is that the modem failed the test, you need to replace the fax/modem or
move it to another ISA slot. Please note that more troubleshooting may be required in some
cases, i.e. bad motherboard ISA slot etc. etc.
10. Finally, reboot the SC-1
Please note that Toshiba TEC does not guarantee in any way and is not responsible
for any damages arising out of the use or inability to use this software. In addition,
Toshiba TEC does not provide any technical support for the above mentioned
software.
