Read this manual carefully to learn how to operate
and maintain your product correctly. Reading this
manual will help you and others avoid personal injury
and damage to the product. Although Toro designs,
produces and markets safe, state-of-the-art products,
you are responsible for using the product properly
and safely. You are also responsible for training
persons who you allow to use the product about safe
operation.
The Toro warning system in this manual identifies
potential hazards and has special safety messages that
help you and others avoid personal injury, even death.
DANGER, WARNING and CAUTION are signal
words used to identify the level of hazard. However,
regardless of the hazard, be extremely careful.
DANGER signals an extreme hazard that will cause
serious injury or death if the recommended
precautions are not followed.

CAUTION signals a hazard that may cause minor or
moderate injury if the recommended precautions are
not followed.
double–insulated. However, a 3–wire extension
cord (an extension cord with a ground) that uses
a NEMA type connector (parallel blade, U
ground) may also be used. Extension cords are
available from your local retailer. Use only
round–jacketed extension cords approved for
outdoor use.
Two other words are also used to highlight
information. “Important” calls attention to special
mechanical information and “Note” emphasizes
general information worthy of special attention.

This unit should consist of the following (Fig. 1):

3. To reduce the risk of electric shock, this
equipment has a polarized plug (one blade is
wider than the other). This plug will fit in a
polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does
not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it
still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to
install the proper outlet. Do not change the plug
in any way.
4. EXTENSION CORD–Make sure your extension
cord is in good condition. When using an
extension cord, be sure to use a cord that is
heavy enough to carry the current that your unit
will draw. An undersized extension cord will
cause a drop in line voltage resulting in loss of
power and overheating. The table shows the
correct size to use depending on the cord length
and nameplate amperage rating. If in doubt, use
the next heavier size line gauge. The smaller the
gauge number, the heavier the cord. To reduce
the possibility of disconnection of the unit cord
from the extension cord during operation, see
Fig. 6.

Electrical Safety Warnings
1. This tool is double–insulated. Use only identical
replacement parts when servicing.
2. WARNING—To reduce the risk of electrical
shock, use only extension cords approved for
outdoor use, such as an extension cord of cord
type SW-A, SOW-A, STW-A, STOW-A, SJW-A,
SJOW-A, SJTW-A or SJTOW-A. A 2–wire
extension cord (an extension cord without a
ground) may be used because the tool is

5. Maintain Appliance With Care–Follow
instructions for lubricating and changing
accessories. Inspect appliance cord periodically,
and if damaged, have it repaired by an
Authorized Toro Service Dealer. Inspect
extension cords periodically and replace if
damaged. Look closely for deterioration, cuts or
cracks in the insulation. Also inspect the
connectors for damage. Keep handles dry, clean,
and free from oil and grease.

6. A nameplate on your unit indicates what voltage
it uses. Never connect the unit to an AC voltage
that differs from this voltage.
7. Avoid dangerous environments. Never operate
your unit in damp or wet conditions. Moisture is
a shock hazard.
Operational Safety W arnings
1. To reduce the risk of injury to yourself and
others, never operate the unit without the string
guard in place.
2. Wear safety glasses or goggles at all times when
operating this unit.
8. Do not use the unit in the rain.
9. Do not handle the plug or the unit with wet
hands.
10. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI)
protection should be provided on the circuit(s) or
outlet(s) to be used for the gardening appliance.
Receptacles are available having built-in GFCI
protection and may be used for this measure of
safety.
Pre-operational Safety
Warnings
1. Thoroughly inspect your unit for loose or
damaged parts before each use. If there are any
loose or damaged parts, perform the needed
adjustments or repairs before starting your unit.
3. Always use face or dust mask if operation is
dusty.
4. Dress properly. Do not operate this trimmer
when barefoot or wearing open sandals. Always
wear sturdy, rubber-soled footwear. The use of
gloves, ear/hearing protection and long pants are
recommended.
5. Do not wear loose fitting clothing or articles
such as jewelry, scarves, strings, chains, ties, etc.
because they could get caught in moving parts.
Also make sure long hair does not get caught in
moving parts.
6. Use gloves and substantial footwear when
working outdoors.
7. Keep hands, face, feet and long hair away from
all moving parts.
8. Do not attempt to touch or stop the string while
it is rotating.
2. Keep all bystanders, especially children, at least
30 feet (9.2 m) away from the work area.
3. Carefully inspect the areas to be cut. Remove all
debris that could become entangled in the string
or extension cord. Also remove any objects that
could be thrown during cutting.
4. AVOID UNINTENTIONAL STARTING–Don’t
carry the plugged-in unit with your finger on the
switch. Be sure that the unit is off when
plugging it in.
5. Before starting, make sure the string head is not
in contact with anything.

9. Always hold the unit with both hands when
operating. Keep a firm grip on both the front and
rear handles or grips.
10. If the unit strikes or becomes entangled with a
foreign object, stop the motor immediately and
check for damage. Repair any damage before
further operation is attempted. Do not operate
the unit with loose or damaged parts.
11. DO NOT FORCE UNIT—It will do the job
better and with less likelihood of a risk of injury
at the rate for which it was designed.
12. Use the right tool. Do not use your unit for any
job except that for which it is intended.
13. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and
balance at all times.
14. Always remain alert. To prevent injury to
yourself and others, do not operate your unit if
you are fatigued.
15. Do not operate the motor faster than the speed
necessary to cut, trim or edge. Do not run the
motor at high speed when not cutting.
3. Do not abuse the power cord. Never carry the
unit by the cord or yank the plug out of the
receptacle. Keep the cord away from heat, oil
and sharp edges.
4. Keep your unit in good working condition. Only
your authorized service dealer should perform
any repair or maintenance procedures that are not
described in this manual.
16. The string guard must be in place at all times
while operating the trimmer.
17. Always stop the motor when cutting is delayed
or when walking from one cutting location to
another.
18. Do not operate the unit while under the influence
of drugs, alcohol or medication.
19. Do not extend the trimming line length beyond
the length specified in this manual.
Other Safety Warnings
1. DISCONNECT THE UNIT from the power
supply when it is not in use and before servicing.
2. Always unplug your unit before you clean or
perform any maintenance on it.
5. Use only genuine Toro replacement parts when
servicing this unit. These parts are available
from your authorized service dealer. The use of
non–standard parts, or other accessories or
attachments not designed for this unit, could
result in serious injury to the user and/or damage
to the unit and could void your warranty.
6. Never use metal–reinforced or monofilament
line that is not specifically designed for use with
your model. Model 51450 uses 0.060 inch
(1.52 mm) monofilament line.
7. STORE UNIT INDOORS – Lock up and store
the trimmer in an appropriate and dry location to
prevent unauthorized use and damage. Keep unit
out of the reach of children.

Installing The D-handle
1. Push the D-handle down over the boom (Fig. 2).
2. Install the bolt, washer and wing nut and tighten
(Fig. 2).
Installing The String Guard
POTENTIAL HAZARD
• Foreign objects can be thrown by trimmer.

• Contact with thrown objects can cause
personal injury.
HOW TO AVOID THE HAZARD
• Never operate the trimmer without the
string guard in place.
This trimmer has been designed and built to
withstand normal use. It will provide many hours of
service provided the following operating instructions
are closely adhered to.

• Contact with thrown objects can cause
personal injury.
HOW TO AVOID THE HAZARD
• Always wear eye, hearing, foot and body
protection when operating this unit.
Connecting The Cord
Use the cord hook when you connect the extension
cord to the trimmer plug to prevent disconnection
(Fig. 6). Use only an outdoor approved extension
cord as specified in the Electrical Safety Warnings
section on page 2.
Starting The Trimmer
1. Place the string guard onto the boom above the
clamp assembly (Fig. 3).
2. Push the string guard down to the top of the
string head assembly and then rotate the string
guard to the proper position (Fig. 4). The string
guard is in the correct position when the string
guard points toward the motor, and the holes in
the string guard line up with the holes in the top
of the string head assembly.
3. Install the screws with a Phillips screwdriver
(Fig. 5).
Squeeze the trigger to start the trimmer (Fig. 7).
Stopping The Trimmer
Release the trigger to stop the trimmer (Fig. 7).
Holding The Trimmer
Hold the trimmer as shown in Figure 8 while
trimming.

Adjusting The Trimming Line
Length
Your trimmer is equipped with a bump head that
allows the operator to release more trimming line
without stopping the motor. To release additional line,
lightly tap the trimming head on the ground (Fig. 9)
while operating the trimmer at high speed.
Maintenance
POTENTIAL HAZARD
• When extension cord is plugged into an
outlet and connected to trimmer, trimmer is
operational. Someone could accidentally
start the trimmer.
Note: Always keep the trimming line fully
extended. Line release becomes more
difficult as cutting line becomes
shorter.
Each time the head is bumped, about 1 inch
(25.4 mm) of trimming line is released. A blade in the
string guard will cut the line to the proper length if
excess line is released.
For best results, tap the head on bare ground or hard
soil. If line release is attempted in tall grass, the
motor may stall.
Decorative Trimming
WHAT CAN HAPPEN
• Accidental starting of trimmer could
seriously injure you or other bystanders.
HOW TO AVOID THE HAZARD
• Always unplug your trimmer before you
clean or perform any maintenance on it.
Line Installation
The trimming line may be replaced by two different
methods — rewinding the existing reel or installing a
prewound reel.
Rewinding The Existing Reel
To rewind the existing reel you must:
1. Check for the correct line size.
2. Remove the existing reel and spring.
Decorative trimming is accomplished by removing all
vegetation around trees, posts, fences, etc.
(Fig. 10).

3. Wind the existing reel with the new line.
4. Reinstall the existing reel and spring.
The Correct Line To Use
POTENTIAL HAZARD
• Use of improper line could cause line to
break and be thrown in operator’s or
bystander’s direction.
WHAT CAN HAPPEN
• Use of improper line could result in serious
personal injury.
HOW TO AVOID THE HAZARD
• Use only Toror approved replacement
monofilament line.
• Do not use any type of wire or other
string–like substance. Do not use
metal-reinforced line.
It is very important to use the correct size line. A line
with a diameter of .060 inches (1.52 mm) must be
used. The motor may overheat and fail if you use a
larger line.
Removing The Existing Reel
Winding The Existing Reel
1. Take approximately 25 ft (7.6 m) of new
trimming line, loop it into two equal lengths.
Insert each end of the line through one of the two
holes in the inner reel (Fig. 15). Pull the line so
that the loop is as small as possible.
2. Wind the lines, in even and tight layers, onto the
reel (Fig. 16). Wind the line in the direction
indicated on the inner reel. Be sure not to
overlap the two ends of the line.
Note: Place your index finger between the
two lines to stop the lines from
overlapping.
Note: Failure to wind the line in the direction
indicated will cause the bump head to
operate incorrectly.
3. Insert the ends of the line into the two holding
slots (Fig. 17).
Reinstalling The Reel
1. Insert the ends of the line through the eyelets in
the outer spool (Fig. 18), then grasp the ends and
pull firmly to release the line from the holding
slots in the spool.
1. Stop motor and wait for all moving parts to stop.
2. Hold the outer spool with one hand and unscrew
the Bump Knob counterclockwise (Fig. 11).
Inspect the captured bolt inside the Bump Knob
to make sure it moves freely. Replace the Bump
Knob if it is damaged.
3. Remove the inner reel (Fig. 12).
4. Use a clean cloth to clean the inner surface of the
outer spool (Fig. 13).
Note: Always clean the inner reel, outer
spool, and shaft before reassembling
the bump head.
5. Check the indexing teeth on the inner reel and
outer spool for wear (Fig. 14). If necessary,
deburr or replace the reel and spool.
2. Hold the inner reel in place and install the Bump
Knob in the clockwise direction (see Fig. 11).
Line installation is now complete.
Installing A Prewound Reel
1. Follow the instructions in The Correct Line To
Use.
2. Follow the instructions in Removing The
Existing Reel.
3. Follow the instructions in Reinstalling The
Reel.
Cleaning The Trimmer
1. Use a small brush or the air discharge of a
vacuum cleaner brush to clean the fan blades.

2. Keep the air vents free of obstructions.
Storage
3. Do not use any strong detergents on the plastic
housing or the handle. They can be damaged by
certain household cleaners that contain aromatic
oils such as pine and lemon, and by solvents
such as kerosene. Moisture can also cause a
shock hazard. Wipe off any moisture with a soft
cloth.
Clean the unit thoroughly before storing it. Hang the
unit by the handle loop. Store the unit in a dry,
well–ventilated area.
