IMPORTANT: Two people are required to
operate the capstan.
POTENTIAL HAZARD
• If the capstan is used as a winch (i.e.,
winding rope or cable around the capstan
and pulling heavy loads), the traction unit
could become unstable and tip over.
WHAT CAN HAPPEN
• If the traction unit tips over, you or others
could be crushed.

The capstan adapter is designed to pull wire through
underground conduit and is not meant for pulling
heavy loads (i.e., being used as a winch).

winch.
• Never wind the rope around the capstan
more than three times and always pull the
excess r

1. Start the engine and run it at a low speed. Place
the pump selector valve in the fast (rabbit)
position.
2. Position the capstan adaptor so its axis is
horizontal and it is close to the ground.

IMPORTANT: Keep the capstan adaptor
close to the ground during operation.
3. Tie one end of a rope to the wire to be pulled.
4. Keeping the rope tight between the wire and the
capstan, wrap the rope around the capstan three
times.
5. While one person pulls up on the free end of the
rope to keep it tight and perpendicular to the
incoming rope, the other should use the auxiliary
hydraulics lever to rotate the capstan adaptor in
the appropriate direction.
Note: The person pulling on the free end of
the rope can control the speed and
pulling force by changing the tension
on the free end.
POTENTIAL HAZARD
• If the outgoing rope is pulled inline with
the incoming rope and the rope breaks, the
rope may snap back dangerously.

6. When finished, stop the auger drive head, stop
the engine, and remove the rope.
