Tobacco Smoke Detector ZSSD9

Operating and Installation Instructions

No Smoking Detector containing

• Selective Precision Sensor-Chamber

• Unique VWS Technology (voice warning system) patent applied.

The ZSSD9 Tobacco Smoke Detector anti smoking smoke alarm
detects cigarette, cigar and pipe tobacco smoke at an early stage
and warns by means of a loud, voice warning announcement by
way of example ‘This is a no smoking area, please extinguish all
smoking materials immediately’. The ZSSD9 Tobacco Smoke Detector
smoke detector operates according to the ionisation principle. If the
concentration of smoke particles in the enclosure reaches a pre­determined level it will activate the voice waning announcement.
This device contains radioactive substances and should be disposed
of under instructions from the manufacturer!

Product characteristics:­Smoke sensing

Every device is separately calibrated in order to avoid false alarms.
Tobacco Smoke Detector is designed to detect small amounts of
cigarette, cigar or pipe smoke. The device is electronically regulated
internally, thereby maintaining a constant sensitivity of the alarm.
When Tobacco Smoke Detector detects small amounts of cigarette,
cigar or pipe tobacco smoke it will play its announcement message
then shut down for 4 minutes after which time it will be ready to
activate again.

Signal lamp (LED)

A flashing small light (every 43s) signals that the device is
functioning correctly.

Fully automatic test function

Advanced electronics ensure the best possible operating readiness
by means of an automatic self-test function.

Battery warning function.

When the battery begins to run low the device will emit a short
beep warning sound followed a voice message saying ‘My battery
is running low replace it with a new battery immediately’. This
is repeated every 43 seconds for up to 400 times after which the
waning beep will continue to function for up to I month.

Test Button

Momentarily pressing the Test Button will initiate a test sequence.
The voice warning announcement will be played. This ensures the
smoke detector is working correctly. If at this time the ‘Low Battery’
voice warning is played the battery is beginning to run low and
should be changed as soon as possible.

Voice Warning.

The voice warning system is a unique patented system which
is digitally generated and recorded on a proprietary device
manufactured for sole use of the ZSSD9 range of devices.

Approved quality

Thoroughly tested to guarantee highest reliability and a long service
life. Produced under rigid quality controls. Certified according to the
European norm EN ISO 12239 for single smoke detectors. CE and TÜV
certified security.

Placement Location

• Should be mounted on the ceiling in areas selected for No Smoking.

• One device for every 65 cubic metres approximately. The minimum
requirement for large areas request advice from your product
supplier.

• For complicated or extensive properties please request qualified
advice from your product supplier.
Information on fire protection is available at your local Fire Station
helpdesk.

The following locations shall be avoided:

• Next to doors, windows, ventilators etc. where draughts can
deviate smoke from the sensor.

• In small or poorly ventilated garages or kitchens where waste gas
or vapours may cause false alarms.

• In areas where dust and dirt can interfere with the operation or
cause false alarms.

• In areas where insects or vermin may effect the integrity of the
alarm.

• In damp or humid areas (e.g. in the bathrooms).

• In areas where the temperature may often fall below –5°C or
exceed +38°C.

Installation

• Drill two holes either 88 or 102 mm apart where you wish to install
the smoke detector. Insert the screws so as to ensure that the device
will be firmly attached to the respective surface. Open Carefully
open the lid of the smoke detector. Mount the smoke detector
on the screws (please make sure that there is a narrow clearance
between the screw heads and the underlying surface). Please use
the enclosed material (2 screws and 2 plugs).

• Clip the battery lead to the 9V alkaline PP3 battery ensuring the
correct polarity and insert the battery in the space provided.

• Insert the CR123A lithium battery into the space provided ensuring
the correct polarity. This battery will engage the VWS Technology
voice warning system.

• Tighten the mounting screws attaching the device it to the
respective surface.

• Carefully close the lid of the device ensuring it is firmly in place.

Check immediately after finishing the installation that the smoke
detector works properly by pressing the test button for at least 2
seconds.

Testing the alarm

A flashing LED on the device signals accurate operation.
Pressing the test button for approximately 2 seconds will activate
the voice warning announcement. If after the announcement the
‘Low Battery’ message is played then the battery is beginning to run
low and should be changed as soon as possible.

If the announcement cannot be heard after pressing the button or
if the LED does not flash, please do check the following points:

• Is the device damaged?

• Is the device clean? (For your security please vacuum the outside
cover regularly to remove dust and dirt.)

• Are the batteries working properly? Are you using the required
battery types? Are the batteries connected properly? Replace the
batteries if necessary.

alarm if necessary, until the alarm turns off. After the alarm the
device is immediately ready for operation.

Maintenance

Periodic maintenance contributes to a long service life of the ZSSD9
and ensures a failure-free operation.

• Clean the outside cover with a damp cloth at least every three
months (do not use any detergent!).

• Vacuum the outside cover and vents every three month. Never let
the vacuum cleaner come in contact with the interior parts of the
smoke alarm.
Please note!

The ZSSD9 requires sufficient power to operate.

• Please use the appropriate type of branded batteries, used only 9
volt Alkaline for the smoke detector and CR123A lithium for the VWS
voice warning system.

• Please check the polarity of the battery carefully.

• Please verify that the smoke alarm is working properly immediately
after replacing the batteries.

• In case of the battery warning signal, replace the smoke detector 9
volt battery immediately. Otherwise please change it at least once
a year.

General

Tobacco Smoke Detector will activate the voice warning
announcement when it detects cigarette, cigar or pipe smoke.
Everything preventing the smoke from reaching the alarm obstructs
an early alarm.
A single Tobacco Smoke Detector detector provides only limited
coverage and you should consult your supplier if you require large
areas of detection.

It is advisable to familiarise your family and yourself about fire safety
rules and proper evacuation procedures in the event of a fire!

(This product is not a Fire Safety product).

If the smoke alarm is still not working, do not attempt to repair it but
contact a professional.

False alarms

After every alarm activation ensure the air around the detector is
clear and free from further smoke, fan the air around the smoke
