You do not hav e to be an athl ete to get int o opti mal shap e. Anyone at any age can do this by usi ng cro ss train ing to optim al cond ition. Follo w these gui delines:

• Train at the appropriate Target H eart Rate for 30 to 60 minutes 3 -4 time s a week.

Split or Lap Timing
A. In CHRONOGRAPH m ode, select either SP LIT or L AP by pr essing
SPLIT/R ESET/SET/RECALL (Not e: Chro no mu st be at zer o). B. Begin timi ng (pr ess START/STOP) as abo ve. C. Press SPLIT/RESET/SET/RECALL to t emporar ily fr eeze the d isplay
and m easure a sp lit or a lap. You c an now write d own t he split or lap

Using the Second Time Zone

AFTER you have adjus ted the c hest tr ansm itter to a com fort able p ositio n, wait about fi fteen sec­ond s and star t the M onito r on t he watch . If you are already in TIM E OF DAY, CHRONO or TIMER m odes, pr ess HEART RATE to m easure you r heart rate. The hear t sym bol wi ll appear in the u pper di splay. When t he watc h begins receivin g the si gnal fr om th e transm itter, th e outli ne heart wil l becom e solid and begin flashi ng. (W henever yo u mov e into CHRONO or TI MER mo de the w atch will au tomati cally lo ok for a transm itter signal for 15 seco nds. If no sig nal is f ound, t he watch will s top lo oking f or heart rate sign als unt il the HEART RATE butt on is p ushed again .)
4. READ YOUR HEART RATE: When the watc h establi shes con tact wi th the tran smitt er, your heart rate (pulse i n beats p er min ute) wi ll be di splayed in b old di gits in the upp er line, or in t he large d igits i n the lo wer li ne de­pendi ng on the watc h mod e and you r pref erenc e setting in TARGET mod e.
Operati onal Notes
Press and hold HEART RATE to tu rn the Fit ness Mo nitor off. When the watc h establi shes con tact wi th the t ransm itter, you r heart rate ( in beats per mi nute) w ill be d isplayed in the Up per Disp lay. The flash ing hear t will show an arr ow un der it, pointi ng dow nward , when your heart r ate is bel ow the l ow tar get rate, no arro ws wh ile you ar e wit hin th e target r ate, and an arrow above the h eart, poi nting up, if you are abo ve your target r ange. When using the HRM in Chron o or Tim er mo de, the hear t rate w ill be d isplayed i n the Up per Disp lay and th e chr ono or timer count in the L ower Di splay; a p ush of the HEART RATE but ton wi ll fli p the valu es so th at the pu lse rate w ill be t he larger dis­play and t he count will be small er.

The Fitn ess Sy stem is a comb ination of heart rate mo nitor and a spo rts watc h. The Heart Rate Mon itor s enses you r heart r ate on t he chest. It cal­culat es your heart rat e and tran smits it to the watc h. You sim ply g lance at the w atch du ring ex ercis e/traini ng to make sur e you are i n the app ropriat e Heart Rate Range to maintai n or i mprov e your fi tness level (see any fitness gui de for t arget Heart Rate Ranges) . If set , an Out o f Zone alar m wil l auto­mat ically aler t you w hen you are not in your selected Heart Rate Ran ge.

I’m having troub le getti ng a fir st readin g (“ CAN’T SYNC” may ap pear on the d isplay) OR the heart rate num bers ap pear to b e incor rect dur ing oper atio n OR the hear t rate di splayed r emains u nchanged for an extended peri od of t ime.
• LI BERALLY reap ply mo istur e to the t extured contact pads on the back o f the t ransmi tter and ensure t hat the c hest belt fits s nugly an d is m aking goo d contac t with the ski n. You’ll need to r estart t he Mon itor af ter placi ng the c hest tr ansmit ter back on your chest ( hold t he HEART RATE but ton un til the Monit or shu ts off , wait a f ew secon ds and t hen press the HEART RATE button again to reactivat e it).
• M ove away f rom o ther Tim ex Fitness Monit ors or any oth er sour ces of radi o signal s and stat ic electr icity, s uch as exerc ise equip ment o r other electr ical m achin ery.
• Pr ess HEART RATE after w aiting a coupl e of minut es.
I’ve noticed that so metim es the heart stops flashin g briefl y.
The fl ashing h eart is m ore th an just an entertai ning d isplay; i t has a fun ctional purpo se as well. It repo rts th e “healt h” of the com mun ica­tio n link between th e chest t ransmi tter and the wat ch. As lo ng as th e heart is flash ing, th e link i s clear. The co mmu nication system used in the Tim ex Fitness Moni tor is extremel y robu st, yet n o system is per ­fect, and occas ionally, as in any r adio sys tem, th ere may b e interf er­ence or some other b rief int errupt ion of the sig nal. If this sh ould o ccur, the w atch w ill com mun icate thi s to yo u firs t by su spending the flas h­ing of the h eart. M ost oft en, the p roblem resolv es it self and t he flash ­ing resumes . If th e interr uption conti nues, th e wat ch wil l alert y ou wit h one o f the err or m essages descr ibed bel ow.
When the HRM is activ e, the tim e of d ay will be replaced by a “ heart rate o nly” display five seco nds after enterin g TIME m ode. Press and release HEART RATE to see th e time agai n for four s econds. You can tur n the alar m sou nd on o r off during exercise b y pressi ng MODE to reach the TARGET mode an d then START/STOP b etween on and off .
This is not a medica l device a nd is not recomme nded for use by per ­sons with se rious heart conditi ons. Interfe rence with t he radio signa l, poor conta ct between your ski n and the chest strap, and other factors may preve nt accurate trans­mission of heart rate data.
Revie wing Heart Rate Data
When using the HRM in CHRONO or TI MER mo de, pressi ng and r eleasing the HEART RATE button will allow y ou to v iew stat istical data invo lving your heart r ate duri ng your curr ent wor kout. You can view, in sequence,
Total ti me spent insid e your Target Zone. Average h eart rate w hen in the Target Zon e. Average h eart rate f or th e entire t ime th e CHRONO or TIMER is runnin g.
Heart Rate Data is also stored with each l ap time. Wit h CHRONO sto pped, pr ess SPLIT/RESET/SET/RECALL to review s tored lap and spl it data. Th e first push w ill di splay th e RECALLED LAP NUMBER and HEART RATE at the m oment a lap was taken, th e second p ush w ill dis play the LAP t ime and t he SPLIT t ime. The d ata is m aintained until the CHRONO or TIM ER is r eset and i s maint ained ind ependentl y for eac h mode.
