Trotz unzähliger Versuche großer Konzerne, die Schallplatte
(und mit ihr die analoge Musik an sich) lautlos vom Markt
zu verdrängen, haben wir bei Thorens analoge Technik
konsequent weiterentwickelt, weil wir glauben, dass Musik
so am besten klingt, wie sie entstanden ist, nämlich analog.
Genau deshalb sind wir der Meinung, dass die gute alte
Vinylplatte noch lange nicht am Ende ist. Vielmehr fängt sie
gerade erst dort an, wo CD-Spieler aufhören und mp3­Player lange schon nicht mehr zu sehen sind: Bei der unver­fälschten, originalgetreuen Musikwiedergabe. Und so adelt
ein analoges Laufwerk seinen Besitzer als einen Genießer,
der fernab kurzlebiger Trends und hektischer Digitalklänge,

in der Musik Entspannung und Kraft zu nden vermag. Für

diejenigen, die Musik nicht nur als Nebensache betrachten,
ist und bleibt Vinyl erste Wahl!

Thorens hat sich dieser Maxime verpichtet. Sämtliche Ge­räte arbeiten vollständig analog, ohne jede digitale Signal­veränderung – vom Plattenspieler bis zur Endstufe. Das hört
man und darum verbinden Musikfreunde aus aller Welt den

Namen Thorens mit HiFi-Geräten höchster Wiedergabe-

und Verarbeitungsqualität.

Um diesem Anspruch in jeder Hinsicht gerecht zu werden,
entwickeln und produzieren wir auch heute noch nahezu all

unsere Geräte in Deutschland. In jedem steckt so ein Stück

deutsche Handwerkskunst auf die wir sehr stolz sind.

In spite of many attempts by global players of the music
business to silently edge out the vinyl record (and with it
analog music per se) from the market, we at Thorens have
consequently further developed analog technology. It’s
because we do believe that music still sounds best the way
it’s being created, namely analog. Exactly for this reason we
also believe that the good old vinyl record is far from tak­ing its terminal breath. This ist even more so, since the LP
starts where most CD players stop and MP3 players have

already disappeared: the unspoiled, high-delity rendition

of music. In this respect the analog turntable will always
portray its owner as a music connoisseur who is looking for
relaxation and gathering strength through music rather than

one who courts short-lived trends and digital gloss over. For

those who consider music a most important issue, the vinyl

record will always be rst choice anyway!

We at Thorens feel bound to analog. This is why our pro-

ducts, from record player to power amplier, only operate

completely in the analog domain, i.e. without any digital
signal modulation. You can certainly hear this. This is why
music lovers all over the world always associate Thorens

with hi- components of the highest quality in sound and

craftsmanship.

In order to cope with this high demand in every respect,
nearly all products are still developed and manufactured in
Germany. This means each product embraces the kind of
craftwork known as “Made in Germany”, which we are very
proud of.

Bei der Konstruktion unserer Plattenspieler verfolgen wir
verschiedene technische Konzepte. Alle haben gemeinsam,
dass wir sie auf Basis bewährter Thorens Teile stetig weiter­entwickeln. Für die Modelle mit außenliegendem Antriebs­riemen wurde z.B. eigens eine aufwendige Motorensteue-

rung konstruiert, die u.a. dafür sorgt, dass der Teller ohne

Probleme aus dem Stand anläuft und sofort exakte Dreh­zahlen erreicht. Aber auch das traditionelle Antriebsprinzip

mit innenliegendem Flachriemen hat mit dem neuen TD 160

HD zahlreiche Verbesserungen erfahren.

Neue Federn sorgen bei den Modellen mit Subchassis für

eine noch bessere Dämpfung von Schwingungen. In Ver­bindung mit den vielen bewährten Thorens Teilen, wie z.B.
der Achs-/Lager Kombination, steht so am Ende stets ein
technisch hochwertiges und fortschrittliches Produkt, das
dank jahrzehntelang erprobter Basistechnik auch im Alltag

eine gute Figur macht.

When designing and building our record players we are
usually following up various technical concepts. All have in
common that we are further developing them on the basis

of tried and tested Thorens components. For example, the

record players with directly belt-driven platters were pro­vided with an elaborate electronic motor controls which,
among other tasks, took care that the platter immediately
reached its exact rpm after it was started up. The traditional

drive principle with a at belt beneath the main platter has

gone through numerous improvements also.

New high-tech suspension springs employed in the units
with suspended chassis ensure an even better dampening
of oscillations. This combined with many proven Thorens
components, such as the spindle-bearing assembly, etc.
eventually yields a technically high-grade and advanced
product, which thanks to tried and tested basic technolo-

gies will certainly cut a ne gure in day-to-day life also.

In the best of Thorens tradition, we are making good
things better still!





painstakingly adjusted in the factory. All necessary leads are

– das ist die 800er Serie. Das Herzstück aller drei Modelle
bildet dabei das völlig wartungsfreie Thorens Silent-Run

Lager. Seine spiegelpolierte Edelstahlachse hat ein kugel­förmig ausgebildetes Punktlager und läuft in zwei war­tungsfreien Buchsen. Den AC-Synchronmotor steuert eine
ausgelagerte Motorelektronik, deren Sinus-Ausgangssignal
vollkommen unabhängig vom Wechselspannungsnetz

erzeugt wird. Das Chassis besteht aus MDF, das – je nach

Modell – elastisch mit einer Stahlplatte verklebt ist. So wer­den Vibrationen perfekt absorbiert. Ein rundum moderner

nology are very typical for the Thorens 800-series. The heart

of each model is the absolutely maintenance-free Thorens
silent-run bearing. The mirror-polished spindle with ball­shaped bearing tip is made from high-grade steel and runs
inside two bushings. The AC synchronous motor is control­led by an external power supply in which the sine output
voltage driving the motor is generated independently from

the mains frequency. The plinth is made from MDF which

- depending on the model - is then elastically glued to a
steel plate. This measure guarantees the perfect absorption
of any vibration. All in all, this is a modern record player for
discriminating music lovers.

e: The record players from the acrylic-series are stun-

ning from a visual point of view. Thanks to elaborate control
circuitry, an extremely stable acrylic plinth and a massive
aluminium platter, the models from this series are made to
sound as exciting as they look.

The external motor unit was constructed in a way that
there is no mechanical contact to the plinth, thus avoiding
transfer of vibration. In addition, the entire turntable rests on
special feet which effectively dampen all kinds of air-born
or footfall vibrations and eventually ensure a continuous,
undisturbed run of the platter.

d: Die Konstruktion des TD 160 HD basiert auf einem

stark progressiv bedämpften Subchassis, das dank der
neu entwickelten Kunstoff-Feder-Elemente auch die Ver­wendung einpunktgelagerter Tonarme erlaubt. Der einteilige
Plattenteller aus Acryl kommt trotz des innenliegenden
Riemenantriebs ohne separaten Subteller aus. Eine antista­tische Matte aus einem speziellen Kork-Kautschuk-Polymer

sorgt für eine optimale Ankopplung der Schallplatte an den
Teller. Bei der Bodenplatte, der Tonarmbasis und den Füßen
des TD 160 HD kommt RDC zum Einsatz, ein spezieller
Werkstoff aus Mikrogranulaten, der für eine hervorragende
Resonanzdämpfung sorgt. Eine weiterentwickelte Motor­steuerung sorgt schließlich dafür, dass der Synchronmotor
auch bei intensivem Betrieb nicht überhitzt.

e: The construction of the TD 160 HD is based on a pro-
gressively dampening sub-chassis owing to the newly de­veloped compound suspension elements. This would also
facilitate the use of uni-pivoted tonearms. The one-piece
platter is made from acrylic material and driven by a belt
at its underside, yet without the need of a sub-platter. The
platter mat, a blend of cork, India rubber and polymers, has
antistatic properties and ensures the optimal coupling of the

record to the platter. The TD 160 HD features a base plate,
tonearm platform and feet made from RDC, a very special

compound of micro-granules, which provides outstanding
resonance dampening throughout. The further developed
electronic motor control prevents the synchronous motor
from running hot, in particular when subject to extensive
operation.

und vertikale Schwingungen unabhängig voneinander be-

dämpft und so in Verbindung mit dem über 4 kg schweren
Plattenteller und dem Low-Friction Lager für eine unglaub-

liche Laufruhe und einzigartige Klangstabilität sorgt. Die
interne Motorsteuerungseinheit sorgt dank elektronischer

Stabilisation für exakte Drehzahlen. Viele zusätzliche Details,

wie ein geschliffener Präzisionsriemen, der diamantgedrehte

vertical oscillations. Together with the 4-kg-platter and

circuitry takes care of highly precise rpm by means of elec­tronic stabilization. Additional features, such as the preci­sion-ground belt, a solid turned platter combined with a
layer of bitumen, the absolutely silent AC synchronous mo-

enhance the outstanding sound quality of the TD 350.

operational buttons, is available either chrome-plated

or with black anodized aluminum nish. The high-grade
plinth itself has been rened with nest black piano lacquer

whereby the variable side cheeks can be perfectly matched
with those of the Thorens Electronic Series.

TD 550

d: Der TD 550 baut auf der Konstruktion des TD 350 auf

und besitzt wie dieser ein freischwingendes Subchassis und

einen außenliegenden Riemenantrieb. Durch seine großzü­gigen Abmessungen können auch 12” Tonarme montiert

werden. Das Tonarmbrett aus hochsteifer Kohlefaser sorgt

für eine extrem starre Verbindung zwischen Plattenteller und

Tonarm. Durch Drehknöpfe auf der Oberseite des Platten­spielers kann das Subchassis leicht in seiner Höhe ange-

passt werden. Die stabilen Entkoppelungsfüße sind ebenso
einfach einzustellen und sorgen für einen exakten Stand.

Der extrem ruhig laufende AC-Synchronmotor sorgt dank
eines speziellen Startprogramms in der Motorensteuerung

von Anfang an für exakte Drehzahlen. Für den Anschluss
besitzt der TD 550 sowohl symmetrische (XLR) als auch

asymmetrische (Cinch) Ausgänge.

e: The TD 550 is based on the construction of the TD
350 and like it comes equipped with a suspended chassis

and the belt drive around the outer rim of the platter. The
player‘s generous dimensions allow the mounting of

12-inch tonearms also. The tonearm platform is made
from extremely stiff carbon bre compound which ensures a

very rigid coupling of platter and tonearm. If necessary, the
suspended chassis can be conveniently adjusted in height
by thumb screws on top of the plinth. The sturdy feet can
likewise be adjusted in order to achieve a level position.
Owing to its electronically controlled start-up procedure the
extremely silent AC synchronous motor will drive the platter

to the selected speed within no time. For making signal
connections the TD 550 has been equipped with balanced
(XLR) as well as unbalanced (RCA) output jacks.

the remarkable Thorens Electronic Series. In both pre- and
power amplier a unique and unprecedented circuit con­cept has been employed, which consequently pursues a
different path without having to resort to “little digital help­ers”. These hand-made components form a compatible
system that is just waiting for one of our turntables (or any
other source) to start working together…

der TEM 3200 völlig neue Maßstäbe in punkto Feindynamik
und Räumlichkeit. Die Besonderheit seiner Konstruktion liegt
in einer 100% symmetrischen Struktur mit durchgängiger DC-

Kopplung und vollautomatischer Arbeitspunktregelung. Dies
ermöglicht die Verwendung je eines extrem leistungsstarken
Transistors pro Signalzweig, welcher durch eine speziell kons-

truierte Röhrenstufe im Eingang zusätzlich linearisiert wird.
Dadurch wird die Charakteristik des TEM 3200 nicht vom
Transistor, sondern von den verwendeten Röhren dominiert.

e: Owing to a revolutionary circuit design, the TEM 3200

has set a new benchmark with respect to dynamic rendi­tion and soundstage. Special features are the fully balanced
circuitry layout and structure as well as the DC-coupling and
automatic bias control. All these measures allow the use of
just one high-power transistor in each signal path which is
then further linearized by a specially designed valve circuitry
in the input stage. Eventually, the sonic characteristics of

the TEM 3200 are determined by the valve rather than the

transistor.

d: Der TEP 3800 ist ein analoger Vorverstärker in Röh­rentechnik. Das Herzstück der Vorstufe bildet eine weltweit

einzigartige Schaltungstechnik: der Gegenparallel Verstärker.

e: The TEP 3800 is an analogue valve pre-amplier at the

heart of which consists an unprecedented circuit design:
the counter-parallel amplier. As opposed to customary cir­cuitries, this has been designed with a fully balanced layout
and it is entirely DC-coupled. Another outstanding feature
is the extremely low output impedance of the triode stage,
which can do without any output transformers.

The bias of each strictly selected valve is elaborately
supervised. The use of digital micro-processors within the
circuitry however has consciously been omitted in order to
ensure that no “digital garbage” can spoil the analogue sig­nal. The fully balanced volume control renders music in all

its sonic beauty and delity, at any position. The TEP 3800

is provided with balanced as well as unbalanced inputs and
outputs and in addition is well equipped to work in com­bination with home cinema components as well. The TEP

3800 is the perfect partner for the powerful Thorens mono­block ampliers TEM 3200.

d: Die Thorens Laufwerke gehören zur Spitze der HiFi-

Technik und holen selbst letzte Details aus Ihren wertvollen
Langspielplatten heraus. Die Signale der Tonabnehmersys­teme sind dabei so klein, dass sie extrem verstärkt werden

müssen. Viele Verstärker enthalten heute jedoch gar keinen

speziellen Phonoeingang mehr. Aus diesem Grund haben
wir es uns zum Ziel gemacht, einen Phonovorverstärker zu
entwickeln, der die hervorragenden Abtasteigenschaften
der Thorens Laufwerke nicht schmälert, sondern die Signale

in perfekter Qualität für den Vorverstärker aufbereitet.

Der TEP 302 ist ein reinrassiger Class-A-Verstärker. In

ihm kommen nur ausgesuchte Operationsverstärker zum
Einsatz, die extrem rauscharm sind. Das Schaltungslay­out wurde in mehreren Stufen durch Hörtests klanglich

optimiert. Natürlich ist auch ein 15-Hz-Subsonic-Filter fest

eingebaut, der Ihre Lautsprecherboxen vor zu starken Aus-

lenkungen durch Höhenschlag der Schallplatten schützt.

e: Thorens turntables can be considered state-of-the-

art in hi- technology as they would extract even the most

minute details from your precious vinyl records. The sig­nals generated by the pickup cartridges are however very

small and therefore must be amplied to a much higher
level. Regrettably, most of today’s ampliers are no longer

equipped with a dedicated phono stage. This unfortunate
situation was a good reason for Thorens to develop the TEP
302, a complete phono preamplier including RIAA equali­zation, which was to complement the outstanding playback
performance of our turntables.

The TEP 302 is a pure-bred Class-A amplier which em-

ploys selected, very special low-noise operational ampliers

throughout. The circuitry has been optimized “by ear” after

several extended listening sessions. Of course, the TEP 302
also features a 15-Hz subsonic lter in order to protect the

woofers from dangerous excursions when a warped record is
