different models to accommodate a wide variety of applications rang
ing from grinding steel rod mill rolls to small precision automotive,
aircraft and missile components. It can be tooled for completely
automated production as well as for hand feeding.
All the advantages of abrasive machining at its best are possible
with this machine and the Crushtrue wheel dressing process. Materials
including stainless steel, brass, aluminum and plastic can be formed to
exacting tolerances and surface finishes. Simple or intricate forms are
produced at cost saving, high stock removal speeds.

EXCLUSIVE DESIGN FEATURES
Wheelhead Assembly
The complete wheelhead assembly is mounted on hardened
flat steel ways efficiently lubricated by an oil mist system which
is part of the assembly. A unique feature of the wheelhead is
the grinding wheel spindle which is of the “dead”
The grinding wheel rotates on precision roller bearings which
provide maximum support during grinding and wheel dressing.
The massive dead shaft design provides rigidity and accuracy.
Infeed of the wheelhead is powered by a hydraulic system
that provides unmatched smoothness and precise automatic
control.
a 9" width can be accommodated by the wheel spindle.
Solid 6" wide wheels, or narrower wheels spaced to
shaft design.
Workhead
The heavy duty live center workhead is driven by a precision
balanced, 2 horsepower variable speed D.C. motor, giving
infinitely variable work speeds from 39 to 780 R.P.M. This
wide
range assures the selection of proper R.P.M. of the
workpiece for optimum stock removal rates.
Standard collets up to 2!4"
chucks can be accommodated on the #8 American Standard
taper spindle nose.

an air operated quill. A Pressure Regulator

Platen
The platen, on which the workhead and tailstock are mounted,
will accommodate workpieces up to 10" in diameter and 24"
in length. The top of the machine base provides an accurately
scraped surface on which the platen is mounted, with clamp
screws securing the platen at both ends.
A center pivot-point in the platen allows for an angular
adjustment of 5° counterclockwise and 2° clockwise.
An annular setting device, gage block type, can be supplied
accessory for fast, accurate positioning of the workpiece
as an
in
relation to the grinding wheel.
Crushtrue Wheel Dressing
The Crushtrue Wheel Dressing Device is mounted directly be
hind the grinding wheel and is an integral part of the machine
base. The same precise hydraulic infeed system that feeds the
wheel during grinding also feeds the wheel in the reverse direc
tion
during Crushtrue wheel dressing. This simple operation
— forward to grind and reverse to dress — reduces the time
cycle
and allows maximum productivity of the machine. A
variable speed electric drive controls the hydraulic feed during
wheel dressing.
Controls
An eye-level height control panel contains all of the operating
controls of the Model 187 Grinder. The panel is mounted on
a post which can be pivoted for ideal viewing and accessibility.
Functional grouping and large panel identification plates con
tribute to ease of operation. Settings for grinding and crushing
cycle rates, indicating meters and warning lights are all ar
ranged for the convenience of the operator. Handwheels to set
the machine for the depth of grind plus the slow-feed grinding
distance are both located on the front of the machine.

Sheffield Crushtrue
Form Grinding is fast

O D
The Model #187 Grinder is built from the ground up to
give you the maximum advantages of abrasive machining
from the Crushtrue grinding process. It handles a wide
range of parts such as servo valve sleeves, sliders, pistons,
ball joint spheres, circular form tools, aircraft and missile
components.
Crushtrue form grinding is much faster, cooler, than
grinding with diamond dressed wheels. You get these im
portant advantages:
• MORE WORK PER WHEEL-HOUR because the CRUSH-
TRUE-dressed wheel has many more sharp cutting points
than diamond-dressed wheels. Free cutting action allows
efficient use of coolant, more stock removal per revolution
and more parts per dressing.
• FORMS COMPLEX CONTOURS in one operation with high
concentricity and close lateral tolerances.
• MATERIALS ARE NO PROBLEM, whether grinding stainless
steel or "heavy loading" metals and plastics. With CRUSH-
TRUE grinding there are no burn spots or loading.
• ACCURACY as close as .0002" width tolerance, radial
depths within .001", depending on material, stock removal,
and wheel used. Straight sides of grooves or shoulders can
be held to within .0003", keeping a sharp corner at the
bottom of deep grooves. Surface finishes as fine as 8 micro
inches can be CRUSHTRUE ground.
• FASTER REDRESSING—When wheel wear approaches part
tolerance limits it is redressed in a matter of seconds by
automatic or manual means.
• ELIMINATES DEBURRING—Wheel can be “
around the part,
corner break.
” leaving no burr, and a very uniform
wrapped
In addition, this grinder enables you to set up automatic
grinding and wheel dressing cycles suitable for practically
any part within the size range of the machine. You get the
benefits of quick, easy set ups for short runs, as well as
maximum production on large lots.
If you require maximum automation, Sheffield will engi
neer and build the necessary automatic size control, auto
matic loading and unloading, and integration of the grinder
With the Sheffield CRUSHTRUE dressing process, a formed
steel or carbide roll having the same profile as desired in the
workpiece is fed into an abrasive grinding wheel until the
wheel takes the reverse form of the roll.
