A) Power switch in OFF position for
testing and diagnostic mode.
In this mode you can check for power on the
control wiring, from an existing thermostat or
control device. It is also possible to detect
cross wired controls or shorted wiring, by
comparing the lights on the HandyStat to
expected outputs. For example, if a call for
first stag e shows up on t he rever sing valve l ight (probab le cross wiring problem) or if
two lights light up when you are sure only one stage is calling, (probable short between
two wires somewhere between the thermostat and the unit).
OPERATING MODE
B) Power switch in ON position for operational mode.
In this mode you will be able to positively control any individual component in the
system without interference from time delays, existing thermostats, or potential wiring
problems. It can be used on any 24-28 Volt A.C. system including commercial with
multistage heating or cooling. (See instructions on the following pages).
Notes:
1) Please make all connections with the power switch on the HandyStat
turned OFF.
2) When using the HandyStat on some mercury thermostats and all
electronic thermostats, it will be necessary to, 1) disconnect the hot lead
to the thermostat, or 2) disconnect all of the leads to prevent feedback to
the heating or cooling unit through the thermostat.
3) When connecting the HandyStat, make sure the RED is connected to the
24 VAC power and the BLUE is connected to 24 VAC common.

Wiring Connections for use o n Residential Heat Pumps:
1) The First stage switch/light controls the YELLOW wire and can be used to check
for an existing signal or to activate the compressor.
2) The Supplemental Heat switch/light controls the WHITE wire and can be used to
check for an existing signal or activate the resistance heaters of the heat pump. The
first stage switc h must be ON before the supplemental heat switch will activate a
component.
3) The Reversing valve switch/light controls the ORANGE wire which can be used to
check for an existing signal or control the reversing valve in the heat pump to affect
heating or cooling mode. We suggest that you turn the supplemental heater swich
OFF before putting the heat pump into cooling mode.
4) The Fan switch/light controls the GREEN wire and can be used to check for an
existing signal or activate the fan independent of the other components of the heat
pump.
5) The Relay switch/light, controls the BLACK wire and is a momentary type, it can be
used to check relays and gas valves. The black wire can be wrapped 10 times
around an Amprobe to check low amp circuits, such as gas valves, or to set
anticipators.

Wiring Connections for Lig ht Commercial Applicatio ns:
1) The First stage switch/light controls the YELLOW wire and can be used to check
for an existing signal or to activate the stage one compressor contactor (Y).
2) The Supplemental Heat switch/light controls the WHITE wire and can be used to
check for an existing signal or to activate the stage two compressor contactor
(Y2). The first st age must be ON before the supplemental heat (stage two) switch
will activ ate a compon ent.
3) The Reversing valve switch/light controls the ORANGE wire which can be used to
check for an existing signal or to activate stage one of auxiliary heat (W1).
4) The Fan switch/light controls the GREEN wire and can be used to check for an
existing signal or to activate stage two of auxiliary heat (W2).
5) The Relay switch/light controls the BLACK wire and is a momentary type, it can be
used to check relays, change over valves or any other 24 VAC control device on a
momentary basis.

Wiring Connections for Gas or Oil Furnaces with Air Conditioning:
1) The First stage switch/light controls the YELLOW wire and can be used to check
for an existing signal or to activate the cooling contactor.
2) The Supplemental Heat switch/light, WHITE wire, is not used on oil or gas units.
3) The Reversing valve switch/light controls the ORANGE wire, which can be used to
check for an existing signal or to activate the heating relay or gas valve.
4) The Fan switch/light controls the GREEN wire and can be connected to check for an
existing signal or to the fan relay to check or operate the fan independently of the
heating plant.
5) The Relay switch/light controls the BLACK wire and is a momentary type, it can be
used to check or test relays, gas valves, or an y other 24 VAC cont rol device on a
momentary basis.
