THERMAL VAK-CHECK CALIBRATION INSTRUCTIONS
EQUIPMENT NEEDED:
DIGITAL MULTIMETER WITH 200mA RANGE
TWO D CELL BATTERIES
47 OHM RESISTOR 1/4W or GREATER
JUMPERLEAD
VACUUM PUMP & VACUUM INDICATOR OF KNOWN ACCURACY
Calibration should be performed in ambient temperatures of 70˚- 90˚F
A properly calibrated instrument reads 500 microns with 37 mA of current passing through the
meter movement and meter shunt combined. Follow the procedure below to test and calibrate the
instrument's meter movement.
INSTRUMENT (models 4501 & 14571) CALIBRATION PROCEDURE:
¾ Turn instrument off and remove batteries.
IMPORTANT: Disconnect from AC power source on AC units (model 14571).
¾ Unplug sensor and remove instrument from case.
¾ Connect the Digital Multimeter's positive lead to the WHITE lead of the sensor cable.
¾ Connect the Digital Multimeter's negative lead to the 47 ohm resistor and connect the
jumper lead from the 47 ohm resistor to the GREEN lead of the sensor cable. The 47 ohm
resistor is in series between the Digital Multimeter's negative lead and GREEN lead of
the sensor cable.
¾ Install the two D cell batteries in the instrument.
¾ Wipe plastic meter face with a damp cloth to remove any static electricity.
¾ Zero the instrument's meter movement using the meter face adjustment screw. Set the
READ/CALIBRATE switch to READ.
¾ Rotate the ADJUST control until the Digital Multimeter indicates 37 mA.
¾ Adjust the trimpot located on printed circuit board or on meter movement until meter
reads 500 microns. Add or remove meter movement shunt resistance on instruments
without a trimpot.
¾ Install instrument into case

SENSOR (model 4510) CALIBRATION PROCEDURE:
IMPORTANT: Verify instrument calibration before calibrating sensor to instrument.
¾ Evacuate sensor to 500 microns or to a vacuum you most widely use the sensor at.
¾ Plug sensor cable into sensor.
¾ Install batteries or plug instrument into AC power source and turn instrument on.
¾ Set the READ/CALIBRATE switch to READ.
¾ Rotate the ADJUST control until the meter indicator stabilizes to the vacuum of the
sensor.
¾ Set the READ/CALIBRATE switch to CALIBRATE and note the number that the meter
indicates on the lower scale. This is the new calibration number for the sensor. Replace
the original calibration number stamped on the sensor with the new number.
