Thank you for purchasing The First years Contigo I480. We hope that it will make your baby’s travel safer, easier, and more pleasant.

We believe the Contigo I480 is the easiest Infant Seat to use. We do more testing than most companies to make it as safe as possible. And, we use the latest methods to assure the highest quality.

We have tried very hard to keep our instructions simple and understandable. We apologize for beginning our instructions with so many warnings but they are very important for you to properly restrain your child. Read and understand all of the instructions and warnings. The safety of your child depends on it!

Section 3 - Warnings

• DO NOT modify or attach any toys, padding, or other items to this Infant Seat. Untested modifications or padding could result in injury in a crash.

• Secure this Infant Seat with the vehicle seat belt or

LATCH bars at all times (even when there is no child in it). An unsecured child restraint can injure others if a crash occurs.

Direct sunlight can make Infant Seat surfaces hot enough to burn your child. Use caution and check the vehicle and Infant Seat on hot, sunny days.

TOMY advises parents that children should use a child restraint with a built-in harness system until they exceed the weight or height limits specified by the manufacturer.

Contigo I480 Infant Seat Use Requirements:

This child restraint is designed for use by children whose:

- W eight is between 5 and 35 lbs (2,3 and 15,9 kg), and

- Height 32 inches or less (81 cm).

Use only in a rear facing position when using this restraint in a vehicle.

•

DO NOT use this infant seat in a forward facing position.

•

Only use this Infant Seat with the vehicle’s seat belts or LATCH System.

•

DO NOT use this Infant Seat with vehicle seat belts mounted to the vehicle door or door frame.

•

DO NOT use this Infant Seat if it cannot be properly installed. Some child restraints will not fit some vehicle seating positions.

•

NEVER use this Infant Seat in any vehicle seating position equipped with an active air bag. Read your vehicle’s owners manual to see to turn off your airbag if you have no back seat or a

child must ride in the front seats. For side airbags see page 10.

• NEVER attempt to install the Infant Seat without the base. The Infant seat has not been designed to be used with out a base.

To determine the types of side impact air bag(s) your vehicle may have for individual seating positions, please refer to your owner’s manual. The Contigo I480 Infant Seat child restraint may be used in any rear seating position equipped only with side impact

5.Vehicle Seat Belt Systems:

Use only the vehicle’s lap and shoulder belt, lap belt or LATCH system when restraining this Infant Seat.

Design and operation of vehicle seat belt systems vary from vehicle to vehicle and from seating location to seating in the same vehicle. Not all vehicle seat belts betls can be used with a child restraint. Refer to the information in this section information on the various types of vehicle seat belt systems.

This type of belt system has a latch plate that will not allow the lap portion of the belt to loosen once it is buckled. The belt is tightened by pulling hard on the shoulder portion of the vehicle belt while pushing down on the restraint.

This type of belt system has a latch plate that allows the belt to slide through even when it is buckled. Many vehicles with this type of seat belt system can be locked by pulling all the seat belt webbing out. Refer to your vehicle owner’s manual for details on switching the retractor from ELR mode to ALR mode.The belt is tightend by pulling hard on the shoulder portion of the vehicle belt while pushing down on the restraint.

This type of lap belt is tightened by pulling on the excess belt once it is buckled.

This belt system’s retractor locks automatically and does not allow the lap belt to lengthen once it is buckled. Tighten by feeding the autobelt back into the retractor while pushing down on the infant restraint.

6. Vehicle Seat Belt Retractors

Consult your vehicle’s owners manual for types of retractors that are in your automobile and the function of the retractors.

Acceptable Autobelt Retractor Type

ALR – Automatic Locking Retractor: Allows belt to be pulled in one motion until fastened, then operates as a ratchet, winding in slack, preventing further extension (until completely rewound). In most belts, you will hear a faint clicking sound that indicates the belt is locked and ratcheting in. Switchable– When Adjusted to the ELR mode Manually adjustable from ELR mode to ALR mode. For most, pull belt webbing all the way out of the retractor to activate the ALR mode. A slight "click" may be heard, but the belt will ratchet in to retractor once switched into ALR mode). In some models, the retractors switch from ELR to ALR by pushing a button.

Unacceptable Autobelt Retractor Type

ELR – Emergency Locking Retractor: Allows the belt

to be freely extended or rewound. It locks only when the vehicle slows, changes direction or stops suddenly.

• Use only with children who weigh between 5 and 35 pounds (2,3 and 15,9 kg) or less and whose height is 32 inches (81 cm) or less.

• Register your child restraint with TOMY.

DO NOT place this rear facing child seat in a front seat that has an airbag.

•

SUFFOCATION HAZARD:

Infant Carrier can roll over on soft surfaces and suffocate child. Never place carrier on beds, sofas or other soft surfaces.

•

STRANGULATION HAZARD: Child can strangle in loose restraint straps. Always use harness, NEVER leave child in carrier when straps are loose or undone.

•

FALL HAZARD: Child’s movements can slide carrier. NEVER place carrier near edges of counter tops, tables or other elevated surfaces. Be sure handle locks into position before lifting carrier.

•

Snugly adjust the belts (Harness) provided with

this child restraint around your child. Secure this child restraint with the vehicle’s child

restraint Anchorage system (LATCH) if available or with a vehicle belt.

Follow all instructions on this child restraint and in the written Instructions located on the bottom of the seat. Do not use without instructions.

2- Leveling base.

. Level Vehicle

- Place I480 and base on auto seat to check if base is level. LEVEL is indicated by the ball being completely in the green area.

- Pull out on the red release knob and slide the angle

foot to raise the base or to lower

the base angle to move ball.

Check to make sure vehicle is on a level surface.

The base is NOT level and seat back is NOT at 45 degree unless the ball is in the green.

NOTE: If needed, a towel or pool noodle can be used for extra elevation and angle adjustment.

Press down on base with knee, tighten auto belt and insert buckle tongue into buckle.

Close (a) and secure (b) “Lock Off” to eliminate slippage.

Pull on auto safety belt to ensure the auto buckle is secure.

CHECK level indicator on I480 by

installing on base to ensure the ball is in the green area.

- CHECK base at safety belt path

for movement. Base should not move more than 1 inch in any direction.

- If base moves, repeat steps until

all safety steps are met.

After Ball is in the green area on Level indicator, open Lock Off and thread auto safety belt through the labeled “Belt Here” auto safety belt path.

Press down on base with knee, tighten auto belt and insert buckle tongue into buckle.

Remove BOTH LATCH Lower

Anchor connector from the LATCH Lower Anchor storage compartment.

Attach the right and left LATCH Lower Anchor to the anchor points. Press down on the base with your knee and pull up on the webbing loop until the webbing is taut.

CHECK level indicator on I480 by installing on base to ensure the

ball is in the green area.

CHECK base for movement

at the belt path. Base should not movemore than 1 inch in any direction.

Consult your automobile’s owners manual or manufacturer for location and availability of LATCH lower anchor points.

Remove BOTH LATCH Lower Anchor connector from the LATCH Lower Anchor storage clips.

Attach the right and left LATCH Lower Anchor to the anchor points. Press down on the base with your knee and pull up on the webbing loop until the webbing is taut.

ball is in the green area.

CHECK base for movement

at the belt path. Base should not move more than 1 inch in any direction.

A locking clip is provided with the

infant seat but a locking clip may be purchased by calling TOMY 1-888-899-2229.

Follow the base installation on pages

17 to 20.

4- Thread the locking clip on the belt as close to the latch plate as possible– It must be within 1 inch.

A Free Sliding Latch Plate will require the use of a locking clip if the base Lock Off feature is not used.

TOMY requires the use of the Lock

Offs at all times for all off base installations.

Lower Infant seat onto the base.

NOTE-You should hear a positive

click when the Infant Seat is installed correctly. Pull up on the Infant Seat handle to ensure the Infant Seat is attached to the base. see figure 1 .

5- If the base does not pass both

checks, repeat installation steps until the base installation passes both checks.

Move handle to the most forward postion. The handle must always

be in in the forward position while in the auto mobile.

Ensure base is installed correctly as described in the Base Installation section before installing the Infant seat.

2- Check That Handle is Locked

Positioning of Handle

- Before the Infant seat is lifted for any reason, check to make sure handle is locked into position by pushing forward and pulling back on the handle.

Press red button on both sides of the handle to move handle. Only use position A for antirebound position. Only use position B to carry the Infant Seat.

- Align locking tabs and press Chest Clip together until tabs snap into place. Note: Try to pull Chest Clip apart to ensure the clip is locked.

B 5 Point Buckle-

- Press red center button until the 5 Point Buckle releases.

Pull Buckle Tongue from Buckle

5 Point Buckle To Lock

Align Buckle Tongues and insert both Buckle Tongues into Buckle until Buckle Tongues lock in place. Note: Try to remove Buckle Tongues from Buckle to ensure the Buckle is locked.

C Harness Adjuster

To loosen harness system

- The Harness Adjuster is located at the Lower end of the Infant Seat between the child’s feet. Press the yellow center button and pull the harness system outward from the seat back over the baby’s shoudler.

Buckle. Pull Harness webbing out until harness is snug over the child’s shoulder.

Note: A snug strap should not allow any slack. It lies in a relatively straight line without sagging. It does not press on the child’s flesh or push the child’s body into an unnatural position.

- Pull out the yellow adjustment

knob located on the seat back and slide the adjustment to either the upper or lower slot depending upon the height of the child.

After adjustment for shoulder height, move yellow knob up and down to ensure the yellow knob has engaged.

Note:The harness should be at or below the shoulder of the child. NeeN

Smaller Children 7.13

Positioning/Removal

- Rolled towels can be added for side support for smaller infant.

- Add a rolled wash cloth for added support between the crotch belt and the infant.

The Head Bolster is held in place with hook and loop fasteners. The top inside of the Head Bolster should be as close to the top of the child’s head as possible.

1-Unfasten outer snaps, remove canopy, head bolster and cold weather boot if included. 2-Loosen harness and place the harness out of the way as indicated in the picture.

3-Locate the Easy Off pad flaps and separate.

Section 7 - Installation and Use

1. Lower dry pad on shell allowing the attachment flaps to remain open.

2. Pull harness through open flaps. Place harness in the harness location slots. Place harness to the side. .

3. Close flaps and secure with the hook and loop fastener.

4. Fasten outer snaps, replace Canopy Head Bolster.

Put heavy or sharp items in the trunk. Loose items can be deadly in a crash.

If you need to use a blanket in cold weathe r , put the child in the restraint and cover both with the blanket.

Section 10 - Care and Cleaning

Removing Seat Pad:

Gently unsnap metal snaps after following the directions on page 34.

Cleaning Seat Pad, Head Bolster and Canopy:

Hand wash in cool water and mild soap.

- Air dry.

Cleaning Shell:

Wipe with mild solution of soap and water. Avoid wetting labels.

- Rinse with clean water.

- Never use “household” detergents or solvents.

Reattach Seat Pad:

Follow directions on page 35 to reattach pad.

Section 11 - Replacement Parts

We know pads get worn or damaged. Some companies charge outrageous prices when their parts wear out. At Compass, we will sell you replacement parts at or near our cost plus what it costs us to handle and ship them. They are still expensive, but we promise they are fair prices. Of course, replacement instructions are always free. Please call for current prices on other items.

Section 12 Accident seats

DO NOT use this Via if it has been in an accident unless it meets the criteria for a minor crash as set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

1-According to NHTSA, a crash is minor if it meets ALL of the following: 2-the vehicle was able to be driven away from the crash site; 3-the vehicle door nearest the safety seat was undamaged; 4-there were no injuries to any of the vehicle occupants; 5-the air bags (if present) did not deploy; AND 6-there is no visible damage to the safety seat.

In addition, please contact your insurance company. Your insurance company may provide some assistance replacing this infant seat if the accident doesn't meet the above criteria.
