OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS –CATALOG NO. 2100-I-E-V Desktop Meter Station
Description
The TESCO Catalog 2100 Desktop Meter Station is powered by a single phase 120VAC 5A
source. The 2100 is a multi-form meter testing device. Its small footprint allows use in an office or
shop environment. Depending on the options selected a load current can be applied to the meters
“A” phase stator. The 2100 can be used for qualification testing of solid state and mechanical
meters (when the tilt version is chosen), verifying meter functions, and program updates. The unit
is protected by a 2 amp circuit breaker.
Meter Potential Voltage
The Voltage selector switch sets the meter potential voltage. The settings are 120V, 208V, 240V,
277V, and 480V. Potential voltage is wired parallel to all meter coils. Note that some newer meters
have an auto ranging feature for voltage and will run at wide range of voltages (see manufacturers
specifications). Some legacy meters can only be powered by a specific voltage. The user should
verify all meter documentation and labeling.
When the 2100 is ordered with the 500VA transformer for testing disconnect functions the 2s meter
should only be tested at the 240 volt setting. This will configure the meter with a 3-wire circuit with a
virtual neutral. This will ensure that the meters back voltage detection will not prevent the disconnect
switch from closing.
This 2100 3-wire configuration is also connected for 12S meters when the disconnect option is
specified. The 3-wire circuit is hardwired (switched) to the 12S form. The voltage selector is
disconnected when 12S is set.
Loading Options
Internal 0.5 amp load:
A 0.5 amp phantom load will be applied to the A stator coil of the meter. Once the meter is
installed and the POWER pushbutton is depressed the load will be applied to the meter.
Load Receptacle:
A 120VAC, 15 amps NEMA 5-15 receptacle is mounted to the front of the unit. Line voltage is
connected to the receptacle through the meter “A” leg. Once the meter is installed and the
POWER pushbutton is depressed the load connected to the receptacle will be powered.
When this option is specified an additional 15 amp fuse is added to the 2100 front panel (to the
left of the receptacle). This fuse protects the unit and will open should any device requiring
greater than 15 amps, or that is faulty, be plugged into the receptacle.
Binding Posts:
Two fifty amp binding posts are mounted to the front of the unit, labeled BP1 and BP2. Binding
post (BP1) is connected to the “A” line stab of the meter and binding post (BP2) is connected to

the “A” load stab of the meter. Connect the current output of a load box to these two binding
post. Maximum current is 50A.
Two Load Option:
Either the receptacle load or the internal 0.5 amp load option can be added with the binding
post option. With this configuration a Load Selector switch is added. Set the switch to
INTERNAL for either the 0.5 amp load or the receptacle load. Set the switch to EXTERNAL for
connecting a load box to the binding post. When the switch is in the EXTERNAL position the
internal load is OFF.
CAUTION: DO NOT connect a load box to the 2100 with the internal load energized. Damage can
occur to one or both devices! Switch the Load Selector to the EXTERNAL position.
The zero insertion force socket is equipped with a meter interlock switch. A meter must be installed
and correctly seated for the unit to power up.
Operation
Verify meter form and operating voltage.
Set meter form switch and voltage selection switch.
If unit has two loading options select internal or external.
Rotate ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) release knob counter clockwise to open the socket. Insert meter.
Rotate knob clockwise to lock meter in socket.
Press POWER pushbutton to apply potential to meter. The pushbutton will light indicating power is
applied to the meter.
Press POWER pushbutton to remove power prior to removing meter from socket.
Special Instructions for Disconnect Operation
The 2100 use phantom loading configurations for the internal 0.5 amp load and the receptacle load.
Because of this some meter manufacturers disconnect circuitry may detect a back voltage when
trying to reconnect the meter (close the disconnect switch). It is best to disconnect any external load
that is connected and set the Load Selector to the EXTERNAL position prior to performing disconnect
tests.
Special Instructions for Connecting an External Load Box
Power the load box from same line source that the Cat 2100 is powered from. Connect the current
output from the load box to the external binding posts of the Cat 2100 (See illustration below).
Energize the meter and the load box and check the meter rotation. If the meter goes backwards,
reverse the current leads on the external binding posts and recheck.
