2 AXON AX 100 mkII Update (English)

Congratulations!

We're pleased that you have decided to upgrade your AXON AX 100 to the mkII version with the AXON Soundboard WAVE XTABLE. This upgrade provides quite a few valuable enhancements, such as the practical integration of a computer editor (PC & MAC) and over 500 sounds. We urgently recommend that you have the upgrade installed by an expert. While the installation only requires a few steps, it's very important that they are performed correctly. We cannot accept any liability for damage to the device or injury resulting from the failure to follow these instructions.
If you would like to install the upgrade yourself, we will try to provide as much assistance as possible, of course. We can imagine that you want to take advantage of the new possibilities as quickly as possible—still, please take your time and work slowly and deliberately, with full concentration.

Installation guide

1. Gather the tools required for the installation. These should include a high-quality, insulated screwdriver, and if possible an EPROM gripper. With care and experience, you can also do the job with two small precision screwdrivers. Nevertheless, we urgently recommend investing in the proper special tool—it may save you a lot of trouble by reducing the risk of damage to the EPROM.
2. You should also perform the work on an antistatic mat and wear an antistatic wrist strap. EPROMs are highly sensitive components which are extremely vulnerable to electrostatic charges. Flying sparks may be exciting in interpersonal relationships, but they can mean instant death for sophisticated electronic devices and their components. Be sure to use extreme caution for this reason.
- Always wear an antistatic wrist strap coupled to the antistatic mat by a pushbutton,
or to a suitable unpainted, grounded metal object such as a radiator or the chassis of the device.
- If you do not have such a strap at your disposal, always touch a grounded metal
object with both hands to eliminate possible electrostatic charges before touching electronic components. Substantial charges may build up when wearing shoes with crepe or plastic soles or clothing made of synthetic materials, or when the humidity is low (in the winter, for example).
- Leave the components in their protective packaging until you actually need them.
After unpacking them, place them either on the antistatic mat, or on their protective packaging.
- Antistatic mats and wrist straps are only effective if they are grounded.
3. Ready? If you haven't already done so, disconnect the AXON from the AC power by unplugging the power cord from the back of the housing. Place the device on the antistatic mat or another clean, grounded surface.
4. Open the housing by removing the 10 screws of the cover with a screwdriver. Place them someplace where they a) will be easy to find, and b) cannot fall into the open

housing. While it's not very likely, such accidents have accounted for the occasional short circuit.
5. Now that the patient is lying in front of you on the operating table with his chest open, it's time to get down to business. First, identify the EPROM that you need to remove— the rectangular chip behind the display, roughly in the middle of the board. After all, we don't want you to put a lot of effort into removing the wrong chip.
6. Carefully apply the EPROM gripper (you're still grounded, aren't you?) and gently lever the EPROM from its socket. This should only require a minimum of effort. Should you feel resistance or notice any other problems, stop and be sure that you have applied the gripper correctly. Do not force it! The same applies if you are using small screwdrivers instead of a gripper. In that case, be sure to work from both sides, alternating between the left and right. Do not lever one side out completely before starting on the other. Doing so would risk doing irreparable damage to the delicate pins of the chip or its socket.

7. If you've done everything correctly, you should now be looking at the bare socket without an EPROM—like this:
8. Carefully (!) pick up the new EPROM with the EPROM gripper or your freshly grounded fingers to insert it into the socket. Please ensure that the notch on the EPROM matches the notch on the socket and that all of the pins are correctly positioned on their openings. (Also see the illustration under item 10.)

9. Once the EPROM is correctly aligned, use two fingers to press it home with gentle, even pressure applied to all of the pins at the same time. Once again, this does not require undue effort. Do not use force. If you feel resistance, stop immediately. Please keep an eye on all of the EPROM's pins—it's very easy to bend or even break them off, which would amount to the destruction of the EPROM.
10. Finished? Then things should look exactly like this. Please note how the notch of the EPROM matches that of the socket.

11. You have mastered the first part well. But that's no reason to get overconfident— please ensure that you are well-grounded for the following steps as well. Carefully remove the AXON Soundboard from its antistatic packaging. Take care not to touch the components or printed circuits; always handle the board by the edges. The alignment of the board is correct when the contact strip is located at the top edge and the socket for the contact pins at the lower left.
12. Next, place the board with the socket on the mating double row of contact pins. Be sure that the pins and sockets are aligned before pressing the board home.

13. As you can probably imagine, a great deal of force is not required. Take your time during the installation to make sure that none of the contact pins are bent and that everything fits correctly.
14. Next, secure the board with two screws (left and right of the upper contact strip). The lower holes are not relevant for the installation.
15. That's it. Replace the cover and secure it with the screws that you carefully set aside earlier. Finally, reconnect your AXON to an AC socket and test it. If you did everything correctly, you should now be able to take advantage of all of the AXON update's features.
16. You can also take the wrist strap off now—it's not all that fashionable, after all.
For further information on using the new features, please see the AXON AX 100 mkII manual on the included CD.
