Code Reading Considerations
BOA Spot ID offers fast decoding of 1D and 2D codes pri nted or directly marked on a
variety of surfaces, including paper, plast ic and metal. The decoder is robust and able
to read poorly printed, w orn or environmenta lly degr aded codes i n any orientation .
Guidelines for reliable code reading are as follows:
1D Codes
• M ini mum distance between bars = 1.5 pixel s (2.5 pi x el s for low contrast)
• M ini mum bar width = 1.5 pixel s ( 2.5 pi xels for low contrast)
2D Codes
• M ini mum cell size = 2 x 2 pixels
• M ini mum dot diameter = 2 pix el s
All Codes
• Non-DPM = Maximum ROI size = 1280 x 960
• D PM = Maximum ROI area = 614,400 pix els (i .e. 1280 x 480, 1024 x 600, 960 x 640,
800 x 768 and anything smaller, such as 640 x 480)
• U se “Invert” preprocessor to decode light-on-dark barcodes
• With the excepti on of “low contrast”, the control parameters descr ibed on the next
page are mutually exclusive. Onl y one can be enabl ed at a time.
General deployment guidel ines:
• Choose a lens that satisfies the FOV and minimum bar/module size
• Adjust wor ki ng distance to maximize the code FOV wher ever possible
• BOA Spot ID with integrated lig ht is a good choice for high contr ast codes pr inted on
non-reflective surfaces
• BOA Spot ID with external dar k field li ght is better for dot peen codes
• BOA Spot ID with external di ffuse of f-axi s l i g ht is better for cur ved or highly reflective
surfaces.
• Increase li g ht and r educe shutter time to stop motion for fast moving applicati on s

Cable Configurations
The BOA Spot Visi on Sensor offers flexible ca bling to suit a number of application
configurations:
1. For typical applications, both the Ethernet and I/O-PWR cables are connected to
provide flexibi lit y betw een the sensor and the control env ir onment. In this
configuration, pow er is usually supplied by the I/O-PWR cable. Note: Power is
common to both BOA Spot connector s.Either or both cables can supply pow er
provided they come from the same power source. Do not co nnect different power
sources to the BOA Spot connectors. Note: The PL-101 is for this config ur ati on .
2. For single cable applications that do not require I/O , the Ethernet cable can be used
to supply power ( r eferred to as “Passive Power over Ethernet” or PPoE) and
communications betw een the sensor and the co ntrol env i ronment. Power is supplied
by connecting a D C vol tag e so ur ce bet ween 12-30V to conductors (PWR and GND)
on the Ethernet RJ45 connector. In this configurati on, t he sensor I/O is unavailable .
Note: The PL-100 module suppli es Passive Power on the Ethernet connection.
3. For single cable applications that do not require an Ether net connect i on at runtime,
the I/O-PWR cable provides limited communications and power between the sensor
and the control envir onment. N ote: The PL-101 is for this configuration. An Ethernet
connection is still required for setup.
Panel Link Modules
The PL-101 and PL-100 are optional modules that provide a safe and convenient way
to interface with BOA Spot. The PL-101 provides an isolation barrier between the
factory and the sensor I/O (differential isol ation) and all ow s conveni ent panel w iri ng.
The PL-100 provides convenient Passi ve Power on the Ethernet connector .

Job Switching Using Inputs
BOA Spot can store up to 32 Solutions (job files) that ca n be l oaded on demand via a
hardware switch. The swi tch uses the g ener al purpose GPI1 & GPI2 inputs. A PLC, or
other hardware contr oll ing dev ice, sets a HIGH signal on the “job change” li ne (GPI1)
and sends a series of pul ses on the “job select” l ine (GPI2) equal to the soluti on #. i.e.
solution 12 = 12 pulses.
The pulse train requir es a 1 millisecond (1 ms) setup and hold time betw een any edge
transition. When a sol uti on switch is detected, BOA Spot will abort the current
inspection ( if running) and sw itch immediatel y.
To use the BOA Spot inputs for job switchi ng, select the “Job Chang e” and “Job Select”
functions in the Input control setup panel as show n.
Note: OS 151209 or later, H ar dware version 21414 or later, and Firmwar e version 1997
or later is required to support the “hardw ar e switch” operation described on thi s pag e.
Note: Job switching is also supported throug h the softw are user interface and the scr ipt
tool. These methods are described later in this manual.

Output Considerations
A hardware output is a signal with a fixed programmed pulse duration and fixed
programmed of fset relative to the incomi ng T r i g g er sig nal . S et one output to PASS and
another to FAIL. If processing is not complete when the output decision is scheduled, a
FA IL output will result. This method guarantees a PASS or FAIL out put at a pr edi ct able
offset for every trigger .

Image Logging
Tw o methods of image logg i ng ar e su ppor ted. If a client PC is connected at runtime,
images can be l og g ed di r ect l y to the PC dri ve. If no client is connected at runtime,
Image loggi ng ca n be se tup to a netw or ke d device using the F TP protocol.
Note: Image logging affects per formance and is not recommend e d for time critical
applications.
Setting up Inputs
The BOA Spot applicati on prov ides opt ions for control ling the inputs. These are
selected in “ Setup Connections” in t he “ Config ur ati o n” panel as shown below. Click
on the GUI table cells to change the control parameters.
Click the trigger “Control”
cell to change the trigg er
input polarity.
Each input supports a noise filter called “debounce”. A signal must remain active for
the duration of the debounce to be considered valid. The debounce settings range
from 1us to 64ms. GPI0 is a special input that is used either as a T r igger or general
purpose input. When used for tr ig ger ing , the polarity of this input is programmable .
BOA Spot inputs ar e avail able t o the script tool for synchroniz i ng w ith external
events. They ca n also be use d as “Job Change” and “ Jo b Select ” i nputs for
hardware job sw it ching (refer to page 27).

Setting up Outputs
The BOA Spot application provides tw o options for controlling the outputs. These
are selected in “Setup Connections” in the “Configuration ” panel as shown below.
Click on the GUI table cel l s to set the D r iver , polar it y and associated pulse
parameters.
Click a cell in the
“Driver” column to
change the output
source. GPO2 can
also select a
“Strobe Pulse”.
Note: The Strobe driver uses the offset/dur ation setti ng s define d in the sensor
panel. The act i ve polarity only af fects the external STROBE output.
Each BOA Spot output can be co nfig ur ed by an equation in the script tool or a
programmable pulse based t he insp ect ion result (either Pass, Fail or Recycle):
Script Setting: Use the script tool to config ure an output to provide a
programmable level or a pulse based on the application need (Note: the GUI
pulse settings are disabled i n this mode – shown as dark gr ay above). Script
selection is non-deterministic, meani ng the output timi ng may vary if the processor
is heavily l oaded. This may occur, for exampl e, when the trig g er and i nspect i on
times are close and BOA Spot is serving images to a connected PC.
Example: A script equation that generates an activ e high 10 ms pulse based on a
PASS result w oul d be:
If (Result = 1) Global.GPO[0] = pulse( 1, 0 ,10)
Click a cell in the
“Polarity” column to
change the output
polarity.

Ver sion 1.2; 2017-11-20 BOA Spot ID Quick Start
Soft Pulse Setting: Selecting thi s se tti ng will automatically define scripts
based on the pulse set ti ng s defined in the GUI. This offers a convenient
alternative to learning the script tool if you only need to generate a pulse
output.
Pulse Setting
duration synch roniz ed to the incoming trigger. In this mode, the output will
pulse IF the result is TRUE and the total inspect i on time is less than the
pulse offset from the tr i g g er. If the pulse offset is too short, BOA Spot wi l l not
generate a pass pulse even if the inspection passes. In this case, BO A Spot
will always generate a FAIL pulse if FAIL is selected on any output. This
would resul t i n false r ej ect s i f the output is being used to contr ol a di r ecti onal
device.
Min Pulse Offset = Exposure Time + Acq uisit ion Time + Inspection Ti me
Example: Pulse 10 ms on GPO0 for a P ASS resul t OR pulse 30 ms on
GPO1 for a FAIL result. Sensor exposure time is 9 ms, acquisi t ion time is
~16 ms and inspection time is ~35 ms. Minimum Pulse Offset = 9+16+35=60
ms. IF the minimum offset is satisfied, BOA Spot will output a PASS pul se on
a good result, ELSE BOA Spot w ill output a F AIL pulse instead. The duration
of the pulse is not si g ni ficant in this decision. However, setting the pulse
longer than the trigger period is not advised. The maximum pulse offset and
duration is 16 seconds.
Note: Processing over head can also affect the minimum pulse offset
requirement. It is good practice to calibrat e this time based on y our typica l
expected usage of the system (i.e. inspection time overhead + system
access overhead)
: This mode offers a deterministic output with an offset and
8. Optionally: Cli ck on “E dit Scri pt” in t he Navigation bar.
BOA Spot offers a basic scripting tool for applica ti on control. If you are set ti ng
up a complex inspect ion (not typical with BOA Spot) or handshaking with
connected dev ice s, the script tool prov ides a lot of flexibili ty.
You do not need to use the script tool for basic application s. Refer to the on-line
help for more details.

T roubleshooting Common Problems
Problems Changing the A ddress
Problem: BOA Spot di sappear s in iDiscover after clicking “ Apply”. Does not reappear.
Reason: BOA Spot must be rebooted for the new address to take effect.
Solution: Close iDiscover. Cycl e pow er to the BO A Spot. Wait for the boot to complete
(about 20-30 seconds). Re-open i D isco ver . BO A Spot shoul d now appear.
Problem: Address does not change. BOA Spot st il l has the factory default address.
Reason: Possi bly more than one BOA Spot on the network with the same (old ornew)
address. This can happen if multipl e BOA Spots at the factor y default are connected.
Solution: Disconnect the BOA Spot that does not change, verify that ther e ar e not
other BOA Spots at that address. Connect one at a time to chang e the addresses.
Problems Connecting to BOA Spot
Problem: C annot connect to the BOA Spot. Cannot open the Home page, or cannot open
the iNspect application w indow.
Reason 1: A soluti on may be running i n a very fast loop, repeating too fast to allow
communication. This sometimes happens when experimenting with a minimal Solution.
Solution 1: Disconnect the trigger to pause the program, or disable “Auto Load” and
reboot the BOA Spot. If this w orks, increase the internal t imer or add to y our Solution.
Reason 2: Low on memory. The 256MB Pr ogr am memory is used to cache acqui red
images, intermediate results, Match templates, and Solution files for quick switching .
Solution 2: Reboot the BOA Spot. A reboot clear s cached Solutions, images, results.
Problem: F ailed to Connect. Error 0x1007.
This message means the “Socket Connect”
succeeded, but the message transfer which
immediately follows connecting, has failed.
Reason: The BOA Spot may be “ too busy” to respond
to the PC. This can happen if you are creating a new
Solution, and it runs very fast because ther e ar e few tool s and a fast Inter nal Ti mer. Or,
if you have added new instructions that take more time, such as savi ng images, the
Internal timer or Trigger may be occurring before al l the instruct ions are co mpleted.
Solution: Disable the trigger to pause the program or disable “Auto Load” and r eboot
the BOA Spot. Increase the Int ernal Timer interval (slow down the BOA). If you have
added new instructions try commenting them out.

Problem: When I click the “iNspect” link, an error message says ActiveX cannot be
installed or se cur i ty settings are preventing ActiveX installation.
Reason 1: Internet Explorer Security sett ings, or Windows Firewall.
Solution 1: Refer to instructions on pages 34-37on configuring t he PC for BOA Spot.
Disable the fir ewall. Pay special att enti on to the Internet Expl or er set ti ng s.
Reason 2: 64-bit Internet E xpl orer 8. On 64-bit GV 3000 or GV 300 systems until
August 1 1, 2015, the Taskbar shortcut pointed to the 64-bit version of Internet Explorer
8; which is not completely functional. The shortcut was redirected to the 32-bit version
of Internet Expl orer on Aug ust 13, 2015 (both versions ar e i nst all ed on all 64-bit
systems). “About I nter net Explorer” wil l expli ci t ly show “64-bit versi on” .
Solution 2: Reboot the system, run iAssistant, and click “C l ean” then r eboot again
before using the 32-bit Internet Ex plor er. Use iD i sco ver or the Emulator Start Menu
shortcuts to access the B OA Spot. These point to the 32-bit ver sion of Internet Ex plor er.
Problem: U nreliable connecti on.
Reason 1: Internet Explorer Security sett ings, or Windows Firewall.
Solution 1: Refer to instructions on pages 34-37 on config ur i ng the PC for BOA Spot.
Disable the fir ewall. Pay special att enti on to the Internet Expl or er set ti ng s.
Reason 2: Low on memory. The 256MB Pr ogr am memory is used to cache acqui red
images, intermediate results, Match templates, and Solution files for quick switching .
Solution 2: Reboot the BOA Spot. A reboot clear s cached Solutions, images, results.
Reason 3: Running and looping too fast for communication.
Solution 3: Disconnect the trigger to pause the program, or disable “Auto Load” and
reboot the BOA Spot. If this w orks, try increasing the internal timer or adding tool s.
Problem: After updating the firmwar e, I cannot reconnect to the BOA Spot.
Reason: The old support files may still be on your system if you did not “Clean” it.
Solution: Run iAssistant. Click “Clean”. Reboot the syst em and connect to the BOA
Spot. When you click on l i nks on the home page new support fil es will be installed.
Also make sure you are not using the 64-bit v er sion of Internet Explorer 8. Open
Explorer and then open “About Inter net Ex plorer ”. “64-bit Edi tion” i s explici tly shown.
iDiscover and the Emulator Start Menu shortcuts point to the 32-bit Internet Ex plor er.

Problem: I cannot reconnect to the BOA Spot. I keep gett ing a message to run
iAssistant and clean the sy st em. But running iAssist ant and cleani ng is not fixing this
problem.
Reason: Either the BO A Spot or the PC may be “ st uck” with a running process that
does not quit when is should. Sometimes using sensor s w ith different fir mwar e versi ons
(BOA, BOA2XA, BOA Spot) can cause thi s probl em.
Solution: 1) Disable auto load (if possible) and reboot the BOA Spot. 2) Reboot the
PC. 3) Run iAssistant again, and click the “Clean” button. 4) Reboot the PC again.
5)
_Now reconnect to t he BOA Spot. N ew support files should be i nst all ed.
Problems Running BOA Spot Solutions
Problem: Alw ays outputs a Fail pulse, ev en when the Monitor show s a P ass resu l t.
Reason: The pulse offset may need to be increased, to allow for the inspection time.
Solution: Please refer to the formula on page 49, under “Pulse Sett ing”.
Problem: The Solution file wil l not load.
Reason 1: The Soluti on does not match the current BOA Spot (resolution or model).
Solution 1: Try loading the Solution in the Emulator and see what model is displayed. If
you have trouble, try changing the resolution or model in the Emulator before loading.
Reason 2: If the Solution file will not load in the Emulator, it may be corrupted.
Solution 2: Create a new Solution, or use an earlier v er si on of this sol uti on (if
available) from before the loading probl em began.
Problem: Program Switching is disabled.
Reason: Soluti on switchi ng is disabled when you edit solution files, and when you
export Solutions. Swi tching is re-enabled when you save or load a Sol uti on.
Solution: Save the current solution, or go to the Select Solution panel and load a
solution. Note: Loading a Solution in the Run panel does not re-enable switching.
Problem: D isplay control s are disabl ed in the Run panel. C annot ch ange the di splay.
Reason: These controls are di sa bled when image logging is enabled.
Solution: Disable image logg i ng t o all ow changing the di sp lay settings.
Problem: H istor y Log disabled i n the Run panel.
Reason: The History Log is disabled by default to save on memory.
Solution: History Log is enabled from the Connections panel.
