Installation Instructions
The software that takes Phase Noise and Jitter measurements is included in all
spectrum analyzers running application software version 1.3.x or higher.
However, you need an option installation key to activate it. To activate the Phase
Noise and Jitter Measurement capability, you must enter the new option
installation key supplied with this kit into the spectrum analyzer application. If
your spectrum analyzer is running an earlier version of the application software,
you will have to download and install the latest software before you can enter the
option key that enables the Phase Noise and Jitter measurements.
Updating the Instrument Application Software
Select Help > About.. from the spectrum analyzer software menu bar to check
the version of your spectrum analyzer’s software. The software version appears
at the top-right corner of the About box. If your spectrum analyzer is not running
version 1.3.x or later software, you must download and install the latest version
of the application software. If your spectrum analyzer is running version 1.3.x or
later software, proceed to Install Option Key.
To install the latest version of the spectrum analyzer application software:
Install Option Key
1. Use your Web browser to go to: www.tektronix.com/software.
2. Enter your instrument model number in the Search by keyword text box
and click Go.
3. Follow the link for the RSA6100A Series Software and download the
software.
4. Follow the instructions on the Web page to install the software.
To activate the Phase Noise and Jitter Measurement option:
1. In the spectrum analyzer application, select Tools > Install Upgrades.The
Install Upgrade wizard starts, as shown in Figure 1. Click Continue.

2. The Install Upgrade Enter Key screen appears (see Figure 2).

3. Type the option installation key into the empty text box and click Continue.
An Installation Success dialog box opens, as shown in Figure 3.

4. Click Close. Exit and restart the RSA6100A application to enable the new
feature.
5. Press the Displays button on the RSA6100A.
6. In the Folders panel, select the RF Measurements folder.
7. In the Available displays panel, verify that you can select the Phase Noise
measurement.
This completes the installation of the Option Installation Key.
Installing the Option Key Label
Place the new option key label over the existing label on the instrument rear
panel.
This completes the installation of the Phase Noise and Jitter Measurement
(Option 11) upgrade kit.
