679-5027-00 IEEE1394 Adapter Instructions
071-0631-00
Product Description
The IEEE1394 serial bus is an interconnect standard running up to 400 Mb/s, used for computer peripherals, such as digital cameras and disk drives.
The IEEE1394 Adapter allows you to probe signals on the bus, external to system enclosures, without disturbing system operation. The adapter maintains a balanced 55 ohm signal path, is hot-pluggable, and can be used in both single-ended and differential modes.
Using the Adapter
To use the IEEE1394 Adapter, do the following:
1. Disconnect the firewire cable from the point you intend to probe. The system does not need to be powered off.
2. Plug the IEEE1394 Adapter into the connection you removed the cable from.
3. Plug the cable into the adapter.
4. Connect your probe to the appropriate signal pins. See Figure 1.
5. J4 is used for a current loop connection; this connector typically has a shorting jumper attached.
NOTE. To reduce signal reflections, you can
clip off the pins of the unused test points. For example, if you are only making differential measurements, clip off the two single-ended test points. (This will make the adapter usable for differential measurements only; you will need to use another adapter for single-ended measurements.)

Table 1 lists the signals available on the adapter.

Safety Summary
To avoid potential hazards, use this product only as specified.
To avoid fire or personal injury
Connect and disconnect properly. Connect the probe
output to the measurement instrument before connecting the probe to the circuit under test. Disconnect the probe input and probe ground from the circuit under test before disconnecting the probe from the measurement instrument.
Observe all terminal ratings. To avoid fire or shock
hazard, observe all ratings and markings on the product. Consult the product manual for further ratings information before making connections to the product.
Do not operate with suspected failures. If you
suspect there is damage to this product, have it inspected by qualified service personnel.
Do not operate in wet/damp conditions. Do not operate in an explosive atmosphere. Keep product surfaces clean and dry.
