Tefal 1875 User Manual

Using your generator :
Connect your generator to an “earth” type socket.
The “boiler ready” indicator on the base set and the iron indicator turn on (unless the iron thermostat is set at minimum).
It will be hot when the iron indicator goes out.
Leave the boiler to heat up (for about 8 minutes).
The generator will be ready to use for ironing when the “boiler ready” indicator goes out.
NB : During the ironing process, the iron indicator and the “boiler ready” indicator turn on and off according to heat requirements.
Hints :
• while waiting for the boiler to be ready, and if your iron is hot, you can dry iron fabrics that do not require steam.
• in order to cut down boiler heating time, you can fill it with hot water from the tap using a jug.
When the appliance is used for the first time, a harmless odour and smoke may be given off. This has no effect on the use of the appliance and will disappear quickly.
Before steam ironing, check that you have filled the boiler correctly. Consult the temperature chart and, according to
the fabric to be ironed, use the temperature control thermostat (located on the iron).
The iron indicator turns on : the soleplate heats up. Wait until this indicator goes out before ironing.
In order to get steam, press the steam control button under the handle of the iron and keep pressed down.
Release the control button and the steam stops.
Where to install your steam generator?
You can install the generator :
• on the iron rest plate of your ironing board (if it is large enough) OR
• beside your ironing board, on a heat-resistant stand
Your steam generator should be located at the height of your ironing board or below it. Always place the generator on a firm surface, either while ironing or when filling the boiler.
First of all fill the boiler :
What kind of water should I use?
• Caution : never use demineralised water from batteries, refrigerator condensation, water from a condenser clothes dryer or water from a softener. All these kinds of water harm the steam generator only use untreated tap water.
• If you have a water softener : take the water prior to the softener, or else take care to empty the boiler regularly (see “Maintaining your generator”).
• For safety reasons, never put additives (perfume, finish, fragrance oils, etc.) in the boiler.
Place your generator on a horizontal stand. Check that your generator is disconnected and cold. Unscrew the boiler cap. Using a water jug, fill with one litre of
untreated tap water. Fill the boiler, taking care that the
water does not spill over. If this occurs, remove the excess water.
Replace the boiler cap, screwing on tightly.
Hints :
To iron thicker fabrics, use the steam control.
Every time it is used (and when used for the first time), or
if you have not used the steam for several minutes, press the steam control button several times in succession away from the ironing board. This will enable the cold water to be removed from the steam circuit.
Short bursts on the steam control button are sufficient for
perfect ironing. It is inadvisable to keep the control button pressed down continuously.
If you have no more steam :
The boiler in your generator is empty. You should fill it, carefully following the instructions given in the section below.
Filling the boiler while in use :
IMPORTANT :
Press the steam control button located on the handle of the iron and keep pressed down until there is no more
steam. Never unscrew the boiler cap
while the iron is producing steam.
Disconnect the generator. Slowly unscrew the boiler cap. Using a water jug, fill it with one litre of untreated tap water. Fill the boiler, taking care that the water does not spill over. If this occurs,
remove the excess water. Replace the boiler cap, screwing on
tightly, and reconnect your generator. Wait a few minutes until the “boiler
ready” indicator goes out.
The generator and the iron are ready to use when both the iron indicator and the “boiler ready” indicator are out.
Consult the temperature chart and, according to the fabric to be ironed, use the temperature control thermostat (located on the iron).
The iron indicator turns on : the soleplate heats up. Wait until this indicator goes out before ironing.
Iron your fabric, taking care not to press the steam control button located on the iron handle.
Hints for ironing
Avoid placing your iron on a metal iron rest, as this could
wear out the soleplate. Only place your iron on the iron rest plate of the base set : this is fitted with non-slip pads and has been designed to resist high temperatures.
If you wish to iron woollen garments, simply project steam
by means of the steam control button, without placing the iron on the fabric. In this way the fabric keeps fresh and the fibres stay soft.
After ironing a garment, if you wish to give it a last touch
up, hang it on a hanger and iron it in an upright position.
Begin by ironing fabrics that require a low temperature
(synthetics, silk, wool), and end with those that require a high temperature (cotton, linen).
When you lower the iron thermostat, wait a few moments
for the soleplate to cool down. In this way you will avoid scorching the fabric with an overheated soleplate.
If you iron mixed-fibre fabrics, always set the thermostat
on the lower temperature. For example, a fabric made up of linen and viscose should be ironed at the temperature for synthetics (viscose).
• Your steam generator is an electric appliance. It should be used in normal usage conditions.
• Your generator is fitted with 2 safety systems :
- a thermal fuse for preventing any overheating.
- an exhaust valve incorporated into the boiler cap, in order to prevent excess pressurisation; in the event of a malfunction, the cap allows steam to escape.
Caution: if the safety cap is dropped or knocked heavily, the valve may get damaged. In this case, have the boiler cap replaced in an Approved Service Centre.
• Always connect your steam generator to a power supply where the voltage is between 220 and 240 V. Any connection error may cause irreversible damage to the steam generator and will cancel the guarantee.
• This iron must be plugged into an earth socket. If your are using an extension lead, ensure that it is the bipolar type (10A) with an earth conductor.
• If the power cord is damaged, it must be replaced immediately by an Approved Service Centre to avoid danger.
Caution : the soleplate of your iron may reach very high temperatures, which can cause burns. If your iron is placed for a few moments on the iron rest plate, this plate may also reach very high temperatures. In this case, do not touch either the iron soleplate or the iron rest plate until the iron has cooled down.
Caution : your steam generator allows you to iron with a considerable steam output. This steam is hot : it can cause burns.
• Handle your iron with great care, particularly if your are ironing in an upright position.
• Always leave your generator out of reach of the children. Never leave it unattended while it is switched on.
• Always disconnect your steam generator :
- before filling or emptying the boiler.
- before cleaning your generator.
- after each use.
• In order to unscrew the boiler cap, always ensure that:
- your generator is cold (that is, disconnected for over an hour).
- there is no more pressure in the boiler. In all other cases, never attempt to unscrew the boiler cap while it is in use : the strong pressure could cause burns.
• Never immerse your steam generator in water or any other liquid. While rinsing out the boiler, never fill it directly under the tap. Never hold the generator base set under the tap.
• Should the steam generator be dropped or severely knocked, or if you observe any irregularity in its operation, have your generator inspected by a qualified engineer at an authorised service centre, where it will be restored to good working order.
• If the boiler cap is lost or worn out, have it replaced with the same model.

Never dismantle your iron:
always take it to an Approved Service Centre.
Hints :
• Clean the soleplate of your iron when you notice that it has difficulty in sliding or that the sole plate is stained brown.
Rinsing out the boiler :
Check that the generator is cold and disconnected. With a jug, fill the boiler 3/4 full with tap water. Shake the base set for a few
moments and then empty it completely over a container.
NB : In particular, do not use descaling agents for rinsing out the boiler, as they will damage it.
Cleaning the iron soleplate :
Unplug the iron and clean the soleplate whilst still luke warm with a non-abrasive, plastic sponge. Do not use metal scouring pads, scouring powders or iron soleplate cleaners. For the more stubborn stains, use a non-abrasive, plastic sponge and a cream cleaner.
Caution :
Do not use any cleansing agent for cleaning the soleplate
of your iron.
Never hold the iron under the tap.
The process of smoothing out creases by ironing in an upright position can be used :
• to smooth creases in garments, dry-cleaned articles and curtains.
• to give a final touch up to a garment.
To smooth out creases :
If you smooth out creases in a garment, hang it up on a hanger.
Set the iron thermostat on maximum (cotton, linen) whatever type of fabric it is, and wait for the iron to heat up.
The iron indicator should go out.
Gently stretch the fabric on which the creases are to be smoothed out.
With the iron close to the fabric, press the steam control button (located under the handle of the iron) and move the iron up and down.
Hints :
Do not keep the steam
control button pressed down continuously : short bursts of steam are sufficient.
If you wish to smooth
out creases in cotton, linen or wool, take care to put the iron soleplate in contact with the fabric.
Caution : for synthetic fabrics and silk, take care to smooth
creases by keeping the iron soleplate several centimetres away from the fabric, to avoid scorching.
