2. STEAM HUMIDIFIERS T98 EH4
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
Applying an electrical current to two electrodes submerged a container of water, there is a circulation of electric current between them which increases the temperature of the water to the boiling point. Water, in fact, because it contains a minimum quantity of salts, behaves as an electrical resistance that closes the circuit between the two electrodes.
OPERATION AND EQUIPMENT PARTS
When the production of team is requested, the electronic control applies current to the electrodes immersed in the water, closing the contactor. The production of steam is controlled by measuring the current absorbed with an amperometric transformer. When it descends below the required value following a lowering of the water level, the feed valve is opened allowing water to fill the feed tank from which it descends, by the force of gravity, to the inside of the cylinder. The two small top level electrodes, positioned at the top of the cylinder, control that the water level does not supersede the maximum value. Beyond this maximum value, water is discharged through the overflow pipe of the feed tank. The other two electrodes, positioned on the feed tank, measure the conductivity of the incoming water which is useful to the electronic control for maximum efficiency of the humidifier based on the chemical characteristics of the water itself. The discharge valve is activated by the control unit and is frequency dependent upon the characteristics of the incoming feed water allowing it to maintain an optimal concentration of salt within the cylinder.

START-UP PROCEDURES
Following installation and checking of all electrical and hydraulic connections, the unit may be turned ON by pressing the green switch positioned below the control panel. The display will automatically position a triangular cursor at the indicator for electric current. Simultaneously, the relative values of the aforementioned parameters will be displayed. When humidification is requested, the LED 7) HUMIDIFY ON is turned ON and the control unit fills the cylinder with water: the fill led (4) is also turned on at this point. The operation proceeds until the correct current value is reached. This value dependes not only on the steam production imposed but on the conductivity of the feed water measured by the two small electrodes positioned on the filling cup as well. Steam production is factory-set at 70% of maximum production capacity.
START-UP WITH CONDUCTIVITY OF FEED WATER SUPERIOR TO 1000 MICROSIEMENS
The humidifier reaches full efficiency immediately, adjusting water flow to the cylinder to provide the value of current necessary to produce the required steam quantity.
START-UP WITH CONDUCTIVITY OF FEED WATER INFERIOR TO 1000 MICROSIEMENS
The humidifier reaches full efficiency slowly because it begins on “soft” cycle. This cycle may last one hour dependent upon the conductivity; it will proceed until the conductivity reaches the projected value. If the scarcely conductible water reaches the top level electrodes during the filling phase a prealarm (E05) appears. It is followed by another prealarm (E02) signalling reduced functionality if the conductibility remains low during successive fillings. This pre-alarm may persist for a prolonged time period in cases where conductivity is very low. The aforementioned pre-alarms do not block the functioning of the unit and they are turned off automatically as soon as the conductivity within the cylinder reaches projected values. If the situation persist after numerous fillings (particularly when the humidifier has been in use for some time) it means that the cylinder needs cleaning or replacement and on additional alarm (E08) will appear blocking the functioning of the unit.
SETTING OF PARAMETERS
As already mentioned, some of the indicators are only displayed values while others may be
modified by the user:
2) maximum steam production
3) drainage with electrodes whether under current or not. Respositioning of the triangular cursor by using the pushbutton 12) SEL, the indicators are displayed in a clockwise manner in the following order:
1) - 2) -3) - 4) - 5) - 1) visualisation lasts for 30 seconds afterwich the display returns automatically to the initial start configuration, that is, either current or relative humidity depending on the model. In cases of modification of parameters, the memorization of the new value must be made within 30 seconds by pressing push-button 12) SEL.
MAXIMUM STEAM PRODUCTION
Using push-button 12) SEL, position the cursor at the indicator for max production. The value of maximum steam production which had been previously set is visualized and with pushbutton
13) and 14) this value may be either increased or decreased. Pressing pushbutton SEL a second time the new value is memorized and the cursor is positioned at the indicator 3) CONFIGURATION.
IMPORTANT:
SWITCH TO CHOOSE HUMIDIFICATION POWER
In “AUT” position the system supplies 30% of max water vapour delivery which is preset in phases Iª and IIª of LevControl 1; Iª, IIª, IIIª of LevControl 2. It supplies the max. water vapour delivery in phase IIIª of LevControl 1 and in phase IVª of LevControl 2. In “MAX” position it always supplied the max. water vapour delivery.
Note: The “MAX” position must be used only during the manual leavening phase.

THE USER MUST NOT INTERVENE SHOULD ANY OF THE FOLLOWING MACHINE MALFUNCTIONS OCCUR. IT IS OBLIGATORY TO CONTACT AN AUTHORIZED TECNOMAC TECHNICIAN.
1. THE CONTROL PANEL IS NOT WORKING
2. THE HEATING SYSTEM IS NOT WORKING
3. IN ANY OTHER CASE OF IRREGULAR FUNCTIONING
5. ALARMS AND PRE-ALARMS
PRE-ALARM
Functions to advise the user via display or serial line, of particular situations regarding unit functioning. The control continues to regulate the production on steam compatible with the newly signalled situation (alarm level, reduced functionality, etc.) and verifies whether or not the cuse of the prealarm has disappeared and/or the production of steam may be allowed the return gradually to the required value. On the contrary, after a certain time an alarm is signalled. The pre-alarm consists of: – visualisation on the display or eventual trans-
mission via serial line of the relative alarm code.
ALARM
The alarm is activated following the duration of a particularity of function, already signalled by a prealarm, which does not allow the continuation of regular steam production (eg, cylinder exhausted). It may appear following a temporary situation (voltage excess, lack of water, etc.) which requires intervention of personnel. The alarm consist of:
– visualisation on the display or eventual trans-
mission via serial line on the relative code;
– blocking of the humidifying function (reset is
automatic for E11 and E12 when relative
humidity returns within set limits); – activation of alarm relay; – lighting of alarm led 9) – total draining of water (with the exception of
alarms E31, E32, E11, E12).
ALARMS - TROUBLE SHOOTING
The purpose of the following table is to help the user to identify the cause of eventual malfunctions and to indicate the necessary procedure in case of block in humidifier function. By pressing the pushbutton 10) RESET following an alarm, the humidifier resumes activity. If the cause of the alarm persists however, within a short time the humidifier will stop again. In any case it is advisable, before re-starting the humidifier by pressing the 10) RESET button, to consult the possible remedies suggested in the following table in order to avoid unnecessary loss of time or actions that may damage the unit.

6. MAINTENANCE
WWWWAAAARRRRNNNNIIIINNNNGGGG!!!!!!!!!!
!!
THIS PROCEDURE MAY ONLY BE DONE
BY AN AUTHORISED TECNOMAC
INSTALLATION TECHNICIAN
Regular maintenance is limited to descaling or replacing the boiler, together with annual cleaning (generally done before seasonal close-down).
CYLINDER BOILER CLEANING AND REPLACEMENT
This is necessary when scale on the active surfaces of the electrodes prevents the sufficient passage of electrical current (alarms E08 and E06). To dismantle the cylinder boiler: – drain water completely, by pressing MANUAL
DRAIN button 11) on the control panel;
– cut of power to the equipment by means of
switch or line fuses;
– remove steam pipe from the boiler; – disconnect wiring to main electrodes and
unplug light level electrodes; – unscrew fixing knob to free cylinder, lift boiler
to remove. The boiler may generally be used
again after descaling. Unscrew ring nut (see
figure) and extract bottom filter. Remove
scale and calcareous deposits under a jet of
water and clean grids mechanically or chem-
ically with a commercially available cleaner.
When electrode wear is such that regenera-
tion is insufficient, the boiler must be
replaced. Exchange only involves the body
of the boiler and the gasket. The ring nut,
connection piece and filer do not deteriorate
with use. Reassemble the boiler in reserve sequence, after, checking and if necessary the washer between the threaded connection and the discharge group.
CLEANING AND SEASONAL CLOSE-DOWN
Annually, or before summer close-down, inspect and clean the systems. Drain water from the boiler by pressing the MANUAL DRAIN pushbutton 11) on the control panel and cutting off power. The following is Recommended: – dismantle and wash water intake valve, and
check that intake filter is clean; – dismantle drain group, cleaning conduits and
nozzles and removing and solids from the
base of the syphon; – inspect water intake, drain, steam and con-
densation pipes, and replace them it they are
worn out or fragile.
