Description
The EFX-1 is a wall-mount surround loudspeaker for home theater applications. It offers the choice of bi-pole or di-pole operation, which can be changed at the flick of a switch. In addition to the conventional choices of bi-pole or dipole operation, the EFX-1 can operate with the treble units in dipole mode and the midrange units in bi-pole mode or vice versa. This gives unusual flexibility in choosing the optimum spacial effects characteristics for home theater surround-channel set-up. We do recommend that either full bi-pole or di-pole modes be used in most circumstances.
The system uses a carefully designed sealed trapezoidal cabinet and incorporates two three quarter-inch soft dome treble units, two three-inch midrange units and a five-inch bass unit (fig.1). The midrange units use separate internal enclosures from the bass unit to minimize coloration. Connection is by means of five-way binding posts on the rear of the cabinet (fig.2).

The unit is installed using the familiar “keyhole” mounts on the rear of the cabinet (fig.3). The enclosed mounting template should be used for defining relative mounting bolt locations once final cabinet positioning has been decided. Be sure to keep the template level horizontally. Once in the correct position mark the center of each hole with a pen or nail. Remove the self adhesive template and re-apply it to the adjacent wall once again being sure to stay level. You can re-apply the self adhesive lable several times if required.
The EFX-1 must be mounted so that the midrange and treble units are at the sides of the bass unit and not above and below the bass units (fig.4). The grille cover should be removed to confirm proper cabinet orientation.
Ensure that the wall fastening is designed to accept the weight of the EFX-1 system.
Failure to do so will result in the EFX-1 becoming detached from the wall, with the possibility of serious injury to the installer or

other persons.
Alternatively, the EFX-1 may be mounted on small shelves symmetrically placed along the chosen wall. The same care should be taken in ensuring that the shelf is suitable for the weight and dimensions of the EFX-1.
(fig.3)
The ideal location for the EFX-1 is symmetrically along the side walls slightly behind the main seating area. If this location is not available, the EFX-1 can be mounted symmetrically along the rear wall at approximately the outer edges of the main listening area. Care should be taken to avoid corners whenever possible (fig.5). Corner mounting is not recommended.
Height from the floor should be around two-thirds of the way up the wall, using the same height for both left rear and right rear units (fig.6).
(fig.5)
Please remember that symmetrical placement means predictable and complementary left and right performance. This is true for all
loudspeakers in a room. Once the location of the units has been decided and a secure mounting method implemented, the EFX-1 may be carefully lifted off the wall at any time to facilitate connection.

Please be very careful to observe correct polarity (the + wire to the + terminal (“red”), the – wire to the – terminal (“black”)) when making connections (fig.2).
Setting up the controls
The EFX-1 gives unique flexibility in surround effects options. The following describes operation features of the EFX-1. We encourage you to experiment with the available controls to find the option that suits your environment and taste. However, do remember that you should choose the same settings for both the right rear effects and left rear effects channels.
Bi-pole: With all switches set in the bi-pole mode (all switches to the left, fig.7) all the speaker
units will operate in-phase with one another (they all push air together or pull air together). The drive unit arrangement on the EFX-1 ensures a broad and expansive sound field in this mode.
(fig.7)
Di-pole: With all switches set in the di-pole mode (all switches to the right, fig.8) the drive units
on the two sides are out-of-phase with one another (one side pushes while the other side pulls). An even more expansive sound field can be obtained in this mode.
(fig.8)
EFX-1 Options: You may wish to experiment further by setting the high frequencies in the di-pole
mode with the midrange frequencies in the bi-pole mode, or vice versa. Choose the same settings for both loudspeakers.
