Purpose

This Quick Reference Guide is designed to assist you during
routine LS 5700/LS 5800 operation. Detailed information about
unpacking, installation, performance specifications, and
troubleshooting can be found in the LS 5700/LS 5800
Product Reference Guide.

Product Description

The LS 5700 and LS 5800 high performance omni-directional
laser scanners read bar codes quickly and accurately with a
minimum of effort. Electrical Article Surveillance (EAS)
compatibility which allows simultaneous bar code re ading and
security tag deactivation is offered as an option. Except for
mounting orient ation a nd inst all ation, both sc anners ar e simila r in
most other areas. Unless otherwise noted, this guide will apply
equally to the LS 5700 and LS 5800.

The LS 5700 is designed to rest on top of the counter.

The LS 5800 mounts in the counter with the face of the scanner
flush with the counter top.

The LS 5800 is available with a stainless steel top cover and
scratch-proof scan window option. It is well suited for the most
demanding applications, where hard goods such as bottles and
cans are dragged across the scanner.

Operating the LS 5700/LS 5800 Scanner

Turning On

The LS 5700/LS 5800 does not ha ve an on/of f swit ch. As soon as
you plug it in, it’s ready to scan.

Indicator Lights

Notice the red and green indicator light s insi de the sc an w ind ow.
They provide you with information about the scanner’s
operation. Here’s what you can expect to see:

• Green light on, red light off - The scanner is on, wa iting to de­code a symbol.

• Green light off br iefly - A bar co de has been suc cessf ully de­coded. Y ou will also hear a beep from the scanne r to confirm
this.

• Green light on, red light on - The scanner is asleep. See
Rest/Sleep Mode, on page 6.

• Anything else - Including st ead y red li ght, blinking red light,
or blinking green light. The scanner is not operating nor­mally . Cont act the tec hnical pe rson in charg e of scanning at
your location, or call the Symbol Support Center at the tele­phone number on the backcover.

Controls

The LS 5700 has a push button n ear the top right corner . This push
button is to both adjus t the volu me and tone of the b eeper, and to
wake the scanner from its rest or sleep mode.

When the scanner is operating, depress this button to adjust the
volume/tone. Hold down the button until the desired sound is
obtained. There are five distinct volume/to ne combinations.
Each combination beeps two times before cycling to the next
sound.

If the scanner is in a rest or sleep mode, depressing this push
button briefly awakens the scanner.

Programming

Generally, the technical person in charge of scanning
customizes the scann er for your part icular app li catio n usin g
programming bar codes found in the LS 5700/LS 5800
Product Reference Guide. If you are programming the scanner
yourself, consult the Product Reference Guide for more
information.

Scanning a Bar Code

The dotted areas below represent the active scan area.

For the best scanning performance, the counter top or surface
area covered by the active scan area should be free of any
designs (e.g. stripes or patterns). Ideally, that area should be a
light solid color. To scan a bar code, move an item through the
active scan area in the direction of the arrows, with the bar code

has been decoded successfu lly.

Rest/Sleep Mode

If there is no scanning activity for a specified period of time, the
scanner enters a rest or reduced power mode. The default is 30
minutes. You can change this period of time by scanning the
appropriate bar code in the Product Reference Guide. This mode
saves power and extends the life of the scanner. The
LS 5700/LS 5800 automatically awakens as soon as you pass
a bar coded item past the scan window.

The LS 5700 also has a programmable shut-down sleep option
that turns off the laser and the motor. The scanner can be

awakened from this mode or the rest mode by momentarily
depressing the push button on th e top ri ght corner. When you
press this button, the scanner emits two beeps. The volume and
tone settings remain unchanged.

Maintenance

Cleaning the exit window is the only maintenance required. A dirty
or scratched window may affect scanning activity.

• Remove any dirt pa rticles with a damp cloth.

• Wipe the window with a tissue moistened with
ammonia/water.

• Press window removal latch and rotate forward.

• Insert a coin into the large screw heads on the front of the
scanner and turn counter-clockwise.

• Lift off the window.

To C lean:

• Wipe clean the underside of the upper window.

• Wipe clean the top surface of the lower window.

• Re-install the top cover by tightening the two large screws.

• Remove the window as described above.

• Lift unit out by the two lift straps.

Les lecteurs laser omnidirectionnels haute performance LS 5700
et LS 5800 permettent une lecture rapide et précise des codes à

Le LS 5800 existe avec un revêtement en acier inoxydable et une
vitre en option à l’épreuve des rayures. Il est d’une résistance à
toute épreuve, même dans les environnements les plus difficiles
(lecture d’articles durs tels que les bouteilles ou les canettes).

Utilisation des lecteurs LS 5700/LS 5800

Mise en marche

Les LS 5700/LS 5800 ne so nt pas pourvus d’interrupteur Marche/
Arrêt. Dès que vous les branchez, ils sont prêts à fonctionner.

Témoins

Remarquez les témoins rouge et vert intégrés dans la fenêtre de
lecture. Ils vous renseignent sur le fonctionnement du lecteur :

• Témoin vert allumé, témoin rouge éteint : le lecteur est en
marche et prêt à décoder.

• Témoin vert éteint briève ment : décod age de l’arti cle réus si.
Le lecteur émet par ailleurs un bip de confirm at ion .

• Témoins rouge et vert allum és : le lecteur est en mode Veille .
Reportez-vous à la page 14 pour plus d’informations sur ce
mode.

• Autres situations (t émoin rouge resta nt allumé, témoin rouge
ou vert clignotant) : le lecteur ne fonctionne pas normale­ment. Contactez la personne responsable de la lecture sur
votre lieu de travail ou le service d'assistance technique de
Symbol au numéro indiqué au dos du guide.

Commandes

Le LS 5700 est muni d’un bou ton p ousso ir dans l’angle supéri eur
droit. Ce dernier permet de régler le volume et la tonalité du
beeper et de quitter le mode Veille.

Lorsque le lecteur foncti onn e, ap puy ez sur c e bou ton p our rég ler
le volume/la tonalité. Maintenez-le enfoncé jusqu’à obtention du
niveau sonore souhait é. Il existe cinq combi naisons dif férentes de
volume/tonalité. Chaque combinaison retentit deux fois avant de
passer au son suivant.

Pour quitter le mode Veille, appuyez et relâchez immédiatement
ce bouton.

Lecture d’un code à barres

Pour des performa nces op timales, le revêt ement du comptoir d oit
être uni (ex : pas de motif, ni de rayures) dans la zone de lecture
active. Dans l’idéal, ce dernier doit être réalisé dans une teinte
claire et unie. Pour lire un code à barres, passez l’article dans la
zone de lecture dans le sens des flèches, code tourné vers la

fenêtre de lecture. Le lect eur émet un bip lors que le décodag e est
effectué.

Mode Veille

Si aucune lecture n ’est effectu ée pendant un l aps de temp s donné
(30 minutes est le réglage par défaut), le lecteur passe en mode
Veille (économie d’énergie). Pour modifier cette durée, lisez le
code à barres corresponda nt dans le Guid e de référenc e produi t.
Ce mode économise l’énergie et prolonge la durée de vie du
lecteur. Les terminaux LS 5700/LS 5800 sont réactivés
automatiquement dès que vo us p assez un artic le mun i d’un c ode
devant la fenêtre de lecture.

Le LS 5700 dispose également d’une option Veille/Mise hors
tension programmable qui coupe le faisceau laser et le moteur. Il
est possible de quitter ce mode en appuyant sur le bouton
poussoir situé dans l’ angle supérieur dro it de la fenêtre. Le lect eur
émet alors deux bi ps, les r églages de volum e et de tonalité restant
inchangés.

Entretien

Le seul entretien de ce modèle consiste à nettoyer la fenêtre de
sortie. Si la vitre est sale ou rayée, les performances s’en
ressentent.

• Retirez les pa rticules de po ussière à l’aide d’un chi ffon d oux.

• Frottez la fenêtre avec un tissu i mbibé d ’ammoni aque/d’ea u.

Pour changer ou nettoyer la fenêtre de sortie, procédez comme
suit :

• Appuyez sur le loquet de déverrouillage de la fenêtre et fait­es-le pivoter.

Pour changer ou nettoyer la fenêtre de sortie, procédez comme
suit :

• Insérez une pièce de monna ie dans les grandes vi s à l’avant
du lecteur et tournez-les dans le sens inverse des aiguilles
d’une montre.

• Retirez la fenêtre.

Nettoyage :

• Nettoyez la face inférieure de la fenêtre supérieure.

• Nettoyez la face supérieure de la fenêtre inférieure.

• Remettez la fenêtre en place et revissez les deux grandes
vis.

Extraction de l’unité du comptoir :

• Retirez la fenêtre comme indiqué ci-dessus.

• Extrayez l’unité à l’aide des deux courroies de levage.

Produktbeschreibung

Die ungerichteten Hochleistungslaserscanner LS 5700 und LS
5800 lesen Strichcodes mühel os mi t hoher Ge sc hw in di gke it und
Präzision. Wahl weise ste ht EAS-Kompatibilität (EAS = Electrical
Article Surveillance) zur Verfügung, die das gleichzeitige Lesen
von Strichcodes und Deaktivieren von Sicherheitsetiketten
ermöglicht. Von der Montageausrichtung und Installation
abgesehen sind die beiden Scanner weitgehend gleich. Sofern
nicht anderweitig an gegeb en, gil t diese r Lei tfa den so wohl für de n
LS 5700 als auch für den LS 5800.

Der LS 5700 wurde für die Montage auf der Kassentischfläche
konzipiert.

LS 5800

Der LS 5800 wird in den Kassentisch eingebaut, wobei die
Scanneroberfläche mit der Kassentischoberfläche bündig ist.

Produktfluß

Wahlweise steht der LS 5800 mit einer Edelstahlabdeckung und
einem kratzfestem Lesefenster zur Verfügung. Der Scanner
eignet sich für anspruchs volle Anwendungen, bei dene n z.B. harte
Waren wie Flaschen und Dosen über den Scanner gezogen
werden.

Bedienung des LS 5700/LS 5800 Scanners

Einschalten

Der LS 5700/LS 5800 ist nicht mit einem Ein-/Ausschalter
ausgestattet. Mi t dem Anschließen an den S tromkreis ist der La ser
betriebsbereit.

Anzeigeleuchten

Beachten Sie die roten und grünen Anzeigeleuchten im
Lesefenster. Diese liefern Ihnen Informationen zum
Betriebszustand des Scanners. Folgende Anzeigen sind möglich:

• Grüne Leuchte an, rote Leuchte aus - Dies verweist auf ein­en eingeschalteten Scan ner, der bereit ist, ein Symbol zu le­sen.

• Grüne Leuchte kurz aus - Ein Symbol wurde erfolgreich ge­lesen. Der Scanner send et anschl ießend eine n kurzen Piep­ton aus, um dies zu bestätigen.

• Grüne Leuchte an, rote Leuchte an - Der Scanner befindet
sich im Ruhezustand. Siehe dazu Bereitschafts-/Ruhemo­dus auf Seite 23.

• Sonstige Konstellationen - dazu zählen kontinuierliches
rotes Licht, blink endes rotes L icht oder b linkendes grünes Li­cht. Der Scannerbetrieb i st gestört . Wend en Sie sich a n den
technischen Beauftragten in Ihrem Betrieb oder an die Kun­dendienstzentrale vo n Symbol (Telefonnummer au f dem hin­teren Deckblatt).

Bedienungselemente

Der LS 5700 verfügt über eine nah der oberen rechten Ecke
integrierte Drucktaste. Über diese Drucktaste werden sowohl
Lautstärke und Ton des Piepers eingestellt als auch der Scanner
aus dem Bereitschafts- oder Ruhemodus wieder aktiviert.

Wenn Sie Lautstärke oder Ton einstellen möchten, drücken Sie
diese Taste, während der Scanner in Betrieb ist. Halten Sie die
T as te solange gedrückt, bi s der gew ünschte Ton eingestellt i st. Es
stehen fünf verschiede ne Lau t st ärk en-/Tonkombinationen zur
Verfügung. Jede Kombination ertönt zwei Mal, bevor der Zyklus
fortgesetzt wird.

Bedienung des LS 5700 /LS 5800 Scanners

Programmierung

Normalerweise wird der technische Beauftragte in Ihrem
Unternehmen den Scanner auf die Anforderungen Ihrer
spezifischen Anwendungen einstellen, indem er die im
Produkthandbuch zum LS 5700/LS 5800 Scanner enthaltenen
Strichcodes einliest. Falls Sie die Programmierung selbst
durchführen, können Sie den Produktleitfaden unterstützend zu
Rate ziehen.

Scannen eines Strichcodes

Um optimale Scanergebnisse zu erzielen, sollte die Oberfläche
des Kassentisches, die sich im Scanbereich befindet, keine
Muster (z.B. S treifen oder sonstige Muster) aufweisen. Im Id ealfall
sollten sie eine helle und einfache Farbe haben. Zum Scannen
eines Strichcodes führen Sie einen Artikel mit dem
Strichcodeetikett auf das Scanfenster zeigend in Pfeilrichtung
durch den aktiven Scanbereic h. Sobald ein S trichco de erfolgreich
gelesen wurde, zeigt der Scanner dies durch einen Piepton an.

Bereitschafts-/Ruhemodus

Wird der Scanner über einen bestimmten Zeitraum hinweg nicht
aktiviert, wechselt dies er in ein en Berei t sc ha f ts- oder
Energiesparmodus. Die Voreinstellung sieht hier 30 Minuten vor.
Sie können diesen Wert ändern, indem Sie den entsprechenden
Wert aus dem Produkthandbuch einscannen. Durch diesen
Modus wird Energie eingesp a rt und die Leb ens da uer des
Scanners verlängert. Der LS 5700/LS 5800 wird automatisch
aktiv, sobald Sie einen S tri chcode am Lesefenster vorbei führen.

Der LS 5700 verfügt ferne r üb er ein e p rogra mm ier bar e Ab sc hal t-/
Ruheoption, die den Laser und den Motor abschaltet. Durch

kurzes Betätigen der Drucktaste in der rechten oberen Ecke wird
der Scanner aus dem Bereitschafts- oder Ruhemodus aktiviert.
Beim Drücken dieser Taste sendet der Scanner zwei Pieptöne
aus. Die Lautstärken- und Toneinstellung bleibt dabei
unverändert.

Wartung

Die einzige erforderliche Wartung besteht im Reinigen des
Austrittsfensters. Ein verschmutztes oder zerkratztes Fenster
kann das Scannen möglicherweise beeinflussen.

• Entfernen Sie Schmutzpartikel mit einem feuchten Tuch.

• Wischen Sie das Fenster mit einem mit Ammoniaklösung
befeuchteten Papiertuch ab.

LS 5800

L’LS 5800 viene montato nel banco cassa, con la parte anteriore

Accensione

I lettori LS 5700/LS 5800 non presentano alcun interruttore di
accensione e spegnimento (on/off). Non appena si collega
l’alimentazione, il lettore è pronto per funzionare.

Comandi

L'LS 5700 è d otato di un pulsante po sto vicino all ’angolo superi ore
destro. Tale pulsante serve sia per regolare il volume e la to nalità
del segnalatore acustico sia per rimettere in funzione il lettore
quando è in modo “riposo” o “inattivo”.

Quando il lettore è in fu nzion e, spi ngere il pulsa nte per re golare il
volume/tonalità. Tenere il pulsante premuto fino ad ottenere il
suono desiderato. Sono disponibili cinque divers e combinazioni di
volume/tonalità. Ciascuna combinazione emetterà due segnali
acustici pr ima di passare al suono successivo.

Lettura di un codice a barre

Le aree punteggiate rappresentano l’area di lettura attiva.

Per una migliore lettura, la parte superiore del banco cassa o
superficie utilizzata dall’area di lettura attiva deve essere priva di
segni (ad esempio, strisce, disegni). Tale area dovrebbe
idealmente essere di colore luminoso e pieno. Per leggere un
codice a barre, passare il codice a barre del prodotto attraverso
l’area di scansione e nella direzione indicata dalle frecce, con
l’etichet ta del codice a barre rivolta verso la finestra del l ettore.
Quest’ultimo emetterà un segnale acustico a conferma
dell’avvenuta lettura del codice.

Modo riposo/inattivo

Se non viene ef fettuata alcuna lettura per un determinato pe riodo
di tempo, il lettore entrerà in modo “riposo” o di alimentazione
ridotta. Il periodo predefinito è di 30 minuti. Tale periodo può
essere modificato leggendo con il lettore lo specifico codice a
barre nel manuale di riferimento. Questa fase permette di
risparmiare energia e di prolungare la durata del lettore. L'LS

L'LS 5700 è inoltre dotato di un dispositivo di spegnimento
programmabile in grado di spegnere il laser e il motore. Il lettore

destro. In tal caso, il lettore emette due segnali acustici e la

Manutenzione

La pulizia della finestra di uscita è l’unica operazione di
manutenzione richiesta. Una finestra sporca o graffiata potrebbe
determinare una lettura imprecisa.

• Rimuovere lo sporco con un panno umido.

• Asciugare la finestra con un panno inumidito con ammonia­ca o con acqua.

Controles

El LS 5700 tiene un b otón p ulsad or al lado de la esqu ina superio r
derecha. Este pulsador sirve para ajustar tanto el volumen como
el tono de la señal sonora, y para reactivar el scanner desde su
situación de espera o reposo.

Pulse este botón para ajustar el volumen y el tono cuando el
scanner esté en funcionamiento. Mantenga el botón apretado
hasta obtener el sonido deseado. Hay cinco combinaciones
diferentes de volumen/tono. Cada combinación pitará dos veces
antes de iniciarse el ciclo del próximo sonido.

Modalidad Espera/Reposo

Si no hay actividad de lectura por un período de tiempo
especificado, el scanner en trará en una moda lidad de e spera o de
energía reducida. El valor predeterminado es de 30 minutos. Se
puede cambiar este período de tiempo mediante la lectura del
código de barras adecuado en la Guía de Referencia del
Producto. Esta modalidad ahorra energía y alarga la vida del
scanner. El LS 5700/LS 5800 se reactivará automáticamente tan
pronto como un artículo con códigos de barras pase por delante

Mantenimiento

Warranty

(A) Warranty Symbol Technologies (hereafter “Seller”) hardware Products are warranted against defects in

workmanship and m aterials for a period of t w o (2) years from the date of sh ipment, unless othe rw is e
provided by Seller in writing, provided the Product remains unm odified and is operated under normal and
proper conditions. Warran ty provisions and dura tio ns on software, integrated ins ta lled systems, Produc t
modified or designed to meet specific customer specifications (“Custom Products”), remanufactured
products, and recondit ioned or upgraded pr oducts, shall be as provid ed in the applicable Product
specification in effect at th e t im e of purchase or in the acco m panying software licen se .

(B) Spare Parts Spare parts (i.e. parts, components, or subassemblies sold by Seller for use in the service
and maintenance of Products) are warranted against defects in workmanship and materials for a period of
thirty (30) days from the date of shipment. Spare parts may be new or originate from returned units under the
conditions set forth in subsection D below.

(C) Repair of Symbol-branded hardware For repairs on Symbol-branded ha rdw are Products under this
Agreement, includ ing repairs covered by warranty, the repair services provide d are warranted against
defects in workmanship and materials on the repaired component of th e Product for a period of th irt y (30)
days from the shipment date of the repaired Product, or until the end o f the original warranty pe riod,
whichever is longer.

(D) Product Service Products may be serviced or manufactured with parts, components, or subassemblies
that origi nate from retu rned products and that have been te s t ed as meeting app licable specificatio ns f or
equivalent new material and Products. The sole obligation of Seller for defective hardware Products is limited
to repair or replacement (at Seller’s option) on a “return to service depot” basis with prior Seller authorization.
Customer is responsible for shipment to the Seller and assumes all costs and risks associated with this
transportation; return shipment to the Cus t om er will be at Seller's exp ens e. Customer shall be responsible
for return shipment charges for product returned where Seller determines there is no defect (“No Defect
Found”), or for produc t ret urned that Seller dete rm ines is not eligible for wa rranty repair. No charge will be
made to Buyer for replacement parts for warranty repairs. Seller is not responsible for any damage to or loss
of any software progra m s, data or removable data st orage media, or the rest oration or reinstallation of any
software programs or data other than the software, if any, installed by Seller during manufacture of the
Product.

(E) Original Warranty Period Except for the warranty applying solely to the repaired component arising from
a repair service as provided in Section C abov e, th e aforementioned pr ov is ions do not extend the o riginal
warranty period of an y Pr oduct that had either been repaired or replaced by Seller.

(F) Warranty Provisions The above warran t y p rov is ions shall not apply to an y Product (i) which has been
repaired , t amper ed wi th, alt ered or modi fied , exce pt b y Sel ler’ s au thor ized ser vice per sonne l; (ii) in w hich the
defects or damage to the Product result from no rm al wear and tear, misuse, neglige nc e, im proper storage,
water or other liquids , b at te ry leakage, use of parts or ac c es s ories not approved or su pplied by Symbol, or
failure to perform ope rator handling and sch eduled maintenanc e ins t ructions supplied b y Seller; (iii) which
has been subjected to unusual physical or electrical stress, abuse, or accident, or forces or exposure beyond
normal use within the specified operational and environmental parameters set forth in the applicable Product
specification; nor shall the above warranty provisions apply to any expendable or consumable items, such
as batteries, supplied with the Product.

EXCEPT FOR THE WARR AN T Y OF TITLE AND THE EXPRESS WARRANTIES STATED ABOVE,
SELLER DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES ON PRODUCTS FURNISHED HEREUNDER INCLUDING ALL
IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR USE. ANY
IMPLIED WARRANTIES THAT MA Y BE IMPOSED BY LAW ARE LIMITED IN DURA TION TO THE LIMITED
WARRANTY PERIOD. SOME ST ATES OR COUNTRIES DO NOT ALLOW A LIMITATION ON HOW LONG
AN IMPLIED WARRANTY LASTS OR THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF INCIDENTAL OR
CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES FOR CONSUMER PRODUCTS. IN SUCH STATES OR COUNTRIES, FOR
SUCH PRODUCTS, SOME EXCLUSIONS OR LIMITATIONS OF THIS LIMITED WARRANTY MAY NOT
APPLY.

The stated express wa rranties are in lieu of all obligations or liabilitie s on t he part of Seller for damages ,
including but not limited to, special, indirect or consequential damages arising out of or in connection with
the use or performan c e of th e Product or service. Seller’s liability for dam ages to Buyer or others res ulting
from the us e of any P roduc t or ser vice furn ishe d he reunde r sh all i n no way ex cee d the purc hase pric e of said
Product or the fair market value of said service, except in instances of injury to persons or property.
