Set U p

The LS 1220 can be triggered either by a software
trigger command, or by an external switch. Available
from Symbol is a photo detector (p/n 50-13700-025), a
push button switch (p /n 25-04950 -01) and a foot switch
(p/n 25-04951-0 2). If your LS 1220 came without a host
cable, or if you are constructing you own external
trig ge ri n g s wi tc h, con s u lt t he LS 1220 Product
Reference Guide.

To connect your LS 1220:

• Plug the 25-pin D-connector into the appropriate
RS-232C port o n your host te rmi nal.

• Plug the 9-pin D-connector into the LS 1220.

• If using an external switch, plug it into the female
stereo c o nn e ct or on th e fl yi ng l ea d of the 9 -p i n
D-connector.

• Plug the output cable from the power supply into
the receptacle on the side of the 25-pin D­connector.

• Plug the powe r supply i nto an app rop r i ate AC
receptacle.

• If host powered, a separate power supply is not
required.

• Check all connections to be sure they are secure.

• Program your LS 1220. Triggering option bar
codes begin on page 6. Refer to the LS 1220
Programmer’s Guide for more information on
selecting specific parameters.

Scanning Made Easy

Ready

Before you use the scanner, make sur e all cable connections
are secure.

Test

When you trigger the unit, the scan beam is energized for
approximately 1 second. A tw o button switch is r equired to
activate the aiming be am in l on g r ange models.

Scan

Make sure the bar c ode is within th e scanning range. Align
the bar code and trigger the unit. The scanner has read the
symbol when the green DECODE LED lights.

Scan the Entire Symbol

• The scan beam must cr oss every b ar a nd space on
the symbol.

• The larger the symbol, the farther away you
should hold it from the scanner.

• When th e bars on the symbol are close together,
hold the symbol clos e r to the scanner.

Aiming Tips

Position at an Angle

Do not positi on the scanner e xactly pe r pe ndicular to the
bar code being scanned. In this position, light can bounce
back into the scanner’s exit window, and possibly prevent
a successful decode.

Long Range

Long Range models have an aiming mode to facilitate
accuracy over a longer distance. Consult the LS 1220
Product Reference Guide for more information.

Triggering Options

The LS 1220 can be energized in any of seven ways. To
select a specific option, scan the associated bar code
beginning on page 40.

Level

A trigger pull or external switch closure activates the laser
and decode processing. The laser remains on, and decode
processing continues until a trigger release, a valid decode,
or th e Laser O n Tim e -out is reached.

Host

The host sends a La ser On c ommand. Th e laser remains on
and decode processing occurs until a good decode, the
Laser On Time-o ut is r eached, or the host s ends a Laser Off
command.

Pulse

A trigger pull activates the laser and decoding processing.
The laser remains on and decode processing continues
until a valid decode or the Laser On Time-out is reached.

Next New Code

The LS 1220 decodes a nd transmits inf ormation, then wait s
until a new cod e is dete ct ed before transm itti ng ag a in.

What If...

Nothing happens when you follow the operating instructions.

• Check the system power.

• Check for loose cable connections.

• Make sure the scanner is programmed to read the
type of bar code you want to scan.

• Check the symbol to make sure it is not defaced.

• Try scanning similar symbols of the same code
type.

Note: If after performing these checks the symbol still does

Installation

Le lecteur LS 1220 peut être actionné par une commande
du logiciel ou un interrupteur externe. Symbol propose un

Pour connecter votre LS 1220 :

• Branchez le connecteur D 25 broches dans le port

ordinateur central.

• Branchez le connecte ur D 9 broches sur le LS 1220.

• Si vous utilisez un interrupteur externe,
raccordez-le au connecteur stéréo femelle sur la

Installation

La lecture en toute simplicité

Préparation

Avant d’utiliser le lecteur, vérifiez que tous les câbles sont
correct ement branchés.

Test

Lorsque vous appuyez sur la gâchette du lecteur, le
faisceau de lecture est activé pendant environ 1 seconde.
Pour activer le faisceau de visée sur les modèles longue
distance, il convient de monter une gâchette à deux
positions.

Lecture

Assurez-vous que le code à barres est à portée de lecture.
Alignez le code à bar re s et pres sez la gâch ette. Le déco dage
est effectué lorsque LE TÉMOIN vert DE DÉCODAGE

Conseils de visée

Angle de lecture

Ne positionnez pas le lecteur perpendiculair ement au code
à barres à déc oder. Dans cette position, la lumièr e se r eflète
sur la fenêtre de lecture du lecteur et risque d’empêcher le
décodage.

Longue distance

Les modèles lecture longue distance sont munis d’un
dispositif de visée pour améliorer la fiabilité à grande
distance. Reportez-vous au Guide de référence produit
pour de plus amples informations.

Options de déclenchement

Il existe sept manières d’activer le LS 1220. Pour
sélectionner l’une d’entre elles, lisez le code à barres
correspondant, à partir de la page 41.

Niveau

La pression sur la gâchette ou un interrupteur externe
active le laser et le processus de décodage. Le laser reste
activé et le processus de décodage se poursuit jusqu’à ce
que la gâchette soit relâchée, qu’un décodage soit effectué
ou que la d urée d’activation du laser soit a tteinte.

Ordinateur central

Dépannage

Vorbereitungen

Überprüfen Sie alle Kabelanschlüsse vor Inbetriebnahme
des Scanners.

Überprüfung

Nach dem Auslösen wird der Lesestrahl etwa eine
Sekunde lang aktiviert. Bei Modellen mit großen
Reichweiten ist ein Schalter mit 2 Tasten zum Aktivieren
des Lesestrahls erforderlich.

Scannen

Vergew i sser n S i e sich, da ß sic h der St ri chco d e inn erh alb
des korrekten Scanbereichs befindet. Richten Sie den
Strichcode aus und betätigen Sie den Scanner. Sobald die
grüne DECODE LED aufleuchtet, hat der Scanner das
Symbol gelesen.

Tips für das Zielen

Scannen Sie das gesamte Symbol

• Zum Decodieren muß der Lesestrahl über alle
Striche und Leerstellen des Symbols fahren.

• Je größer das Symbol, desto größer sollte der
Abstand sein, in welchem Sie den Scanner halten.

• Halten Sie den Scanner bei Symbolen mit eng
nebeneinanderliegenden Strichen in kürzerer
Entfernung.

Tips für das Zielen

Halten Sie den Scanner in einem gewissen Winkel

Halten Sie den Scanner nicht genau senkrecht über den
Strichcode, den Sie scannen möchten. In dieser Position
kann das Licht auf das Ausgangsfenster zurückgeworfen
werden und möglicherweise ein erfolgreiches Decodieren
verhindern.

Große Reichweiten

Modelle für große Reichweiten sind mit einem Zielmodus
ausgestattet, der die Genauigkeit über größere
Entfernungen unterstützt. Weitere Informationen dazu
können Sie im Produkthandbuch zum LS 1220 nachlesen.

Auslöseoptionen

Es gibt sieben versc hiedene Möglich keit en, den LS 12 20 zu
aktivieren. Zum Auswählen einer bestimmten Option
scannen Sie den entsprechenden Strichcode. Die hierzu
erforderlichen Strichcodes sind ab Seite 41 abgedruckt.

Pegel

Die Aktivierung des Lasers und die Initiierung des
Decodiervorgangs erfolgt, indem Sie den Auslöser ziehen
oder den externen Schalter betätigen. Der Laser bleibt
eingeschaltet und der Decodiervorgang geht solange
weiter, bis der Auslöser losgelassen wird, das Decodieren
erfolgreich abgeschlossen oder der Abschaltzeitpunkt des
Las ers erreicht wird.

Host-Computer

Der Host-Computer sendet einen "Laser On" (Laser
einschalten)-Befehl. Der Laser bleibt ei ngeschaltet und der
Decodiervorgang geht solange weiter, bis ein Decodieren
erfolgreich abgeschlossen ist, der Abschaltzeitpunkt des
Lasers erreicht ist oder der Host-Computer einen "Laser

Configurazione

Lettura facile

Pronto

Prima di usare il lettore, accertarsi che tutti i collegamenti

Suggerimenti per il corretto puntamento

Angolazione

Non puntare il lettore perpendicolarmente al codice a
barre. In questa posizione, la luce viene riflessa nella
finestra d’uscita del lettore, impedendo così la lettura del
codice.

Long Range

I modelli Long Range dispongono di una modalità di
puntamento che consente di migliorare la precisione della

Opzioni di attivazione

L’ LS 1220 può essere attivato in sette modi diversi. Per
selezionarne uno specifico, leggere il codice a barre di
programma zi one ad esso associato, che si trova a partire
dalla pagina 41.

Livello

L ’attivazione del laser e della decodifica , avviene mediante
un inter ru ttore est erno. Il las e r e d i l decodificatore

Nuovo codice

L’LS 1220 decodifica e trasmette il contenuto del codice a
barre e quindi attende il rilevamento di un codice diverso
dal precedente prima di trasmettere i dati nuovamente.

Livello continuo

Il laser è sempre attivo. La decodifica ha inizio con una
delle possibili attivazioni e continua fino a quando viene
effettuata una lettura valida, oppure viene disattivato il
lettore o vien e superato il time -out di attivazi one del laser.

Lettura e trasmissione dati continua

Il laser e la decodifica sono sempre att ivi. S i sconsiglia di
usare questa modalità se si s ta programmando il lettore con
i menù di codici a barre.

Impulso continuo

Il laser è sempre attivo. La decodifica ha inizio con
un’attivazione e continua fino a quando viene effettuata
una lettura valida oppure viene supetato il time-out di
attivazione del laser.

Cosa fare se...

Dopo aver seguito le istruzioni non accade nulla.

• Verificare che il sistema sia alimentato.

• Verificare che le connessioni siano state eseguite
propriamente.

• Accertarsi che il lettore sia programmato per il
tipo di codice a barre che si desidera leggere.

• Verificare che il codice non sia illeggibile.

• Provare a leggere codici diversi.

Nota: Qualora, nonostante i controlli, non si riesca a leg-

gere i codici a barre, contattare il vostro tecnico di fi­ducia.

Configuración

El LS 1220 se activa con un mandato de activación de
software o con un conmutador externo. Symbol dispone de
un fotodetector (p/n 50-13700-025), un interruptor de
pulsador (p/n 25-04950-01) y un conmutador de pedal
(p/n 25-04951-02). Si el LS 1220 ha llegado sin cable de
conexión al o rdenad or, o si se está co nstru yendo su pro pio
conmutador de disparo externo, consulte la Guía de
Referencia d e Producto del LS 1220.

Para conectar el LS 1220:

• Enchufe el conector tipo D de 25 patillas en el
puerto RS232C correspondiente de su ordenador.

• Enchufe el conector tipo D de 9 patillas en el LS

1220.

• Si utiliza un conmutador externo, enchúfelo al
conector estéreo hembra de la terminación
volante del conector tipo D de 9 patillas.

• Conecte el cable de salida de la fuente de
alimentación en el tomacorriente del lado del
conector tipo D de 25 patillas.

• Conecte la fuente de alimentación a la toma de
corriente alterna apropiada.

• Si se alimenta de energía procedente del
ordenador no se requiere otra fuente de
alimentación.

Prueba

En el momento en que arranque su unidad, se activa el rayo
de luz de lectura por un tiempo apro ximado de 3 segundos.
Para activar el rayo de luz en los modelos de largo alcance
se requiere un conmutador de dos botones.

Lectura

Asegúrese de que el código de barras esté dentro del
alcance de lectura. Alinee el código de barras y active la
unidad. El scanner ha leído el símbolo en el momento en
que el LED del descodificador de color verde se ilumine.

No coloque el scanner totalmente perpendicular al código
de barras que esté leyendo. En esa posición la luz puede
rebotar y entrar en la ventana de salida del scanner
impidiendo así, en alg uno s casos, una descodificación
correcta.

Largo alcance

Los modelos de largo alcance tienen un modo de apuntar
que facilita la precisión a una mayor distancia. Para más

Nivel

Impulso

Un disparador de activación acciona el láser y la
descodificación. El láser permanece encendido, y el
proceso de descodificación continúa, hasta el momento en
que se produzca una descodificación válida o se consuma

El LS 1220 descodifica y transmite información, y a
continuación se pone en espera y no vuelve a transmitir
hasta que no detecte un código nuevo.

Nivel continuo

hasta que cese la activación o hasta que se consuma el

Lectura e informe constantes

Warranty

Symbol Technologies, Inc. (“Symbol”) manuf actures its har dware products in accordance
with industry-standard pr actice s. Symbol warrants that for a period of twelve (12) months
from date of shipment, products will be f ree from defects in materials and workmanship.
This warranty is provided to the original owner only and is not transferable to any third
party. It sha ll not apply to any product (i) which has been repaired or altered unless done
or approved by Symbol, (ii) which has not been maintained in accordance with any
operating or handling instructions supplied by Symbol, (iii) which has been subjected to
unusual physical or electrical stress, misuse, abuse, power shortage, negligence or accident
or (iv) which has been used other than in accordance with the product operating and
handling instructions. Preventive maintenance is the responsibility of customer and is not
covered under this warranty.
Wear items and accessories having a Symbol serial number will carry a 90-day limited
warranty. Non-serialized items will carry a 30-day limited warranty.

Warranty Coverage and Procedure

During the warranty period, Symbol will repair or replace defective products returned to
Symbol’s manufacturing plant in the US. For warranty service in North America, call the
Symbol Support Center at 1-800-653-5350. International customers should contact the
local Symbol office or s upport center. If warranty s ervice is required, Symbol will issue a
Return Material Authorization Number. Products must be shipped in the original or
comparable packaging, shipping and insurance charges prepaid. Symbol will ship the
repaired or replacement product freight and insurance prepaid in North America.
Shipments from the US or other locations will be made F.O.B. Symbol’s manufactur ing
plant.

Symbol will use new or refurbished parts at its discretion and will own all parts removed
from repaired products. Customer will pa y for the replaceme nt product in ca se it does not
return the replaced product to Symbol within 3 days of receipt of the replacement product.
The process for return and customer’s charges will be in accordance with Symbol’s
Exchange Policy in effect at the time of the exchange.

Customer accepts full responsibility for its software and data including the appropriate
backup thereof.
Repair or replacement of a product during warranty will not extend the original warranty
term.

Symbol’s Customer Service organization offers an array of service plans, such as on-site,
depot, or phone support, that can be implemented to meet customer’s special operational
requirements and are available at a substantial discount during warranty period.

implied, on products furnish ed hereunde r, including withou t limit ation im plied w arranties
of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. The stated express warranties are
in lieu of all obligations or liabilities on part of Symbol for damages, including without

Radio Frequency Interference Requirements

This device has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A
digital device pursuant to Part 15 of the Federal Communications
Commissions Rules and Regulation. These limits are designed to provide
reasonable protection against harmful interfer ence when the equipment is
operated in a commercial environment. This equipment generates, uses, and

with the instruction manual, may cause harmful interference to radio

Laser Devices

Symbol products using las e rs comply with US 21CFR1040.10, and IEC825­1:1993, EN60825-1:1994+A11:1996. The laser classification is marked on
one of the labels on the product.

Class 1 Laser devices are not considered to be hazardous when used for their
intended purpose. The following statement is required to comply with US and
international regulations:

Caution: Use of controls, adjustments or performance of procedures other
than those specified herein may result in hazardous laser light exposure.

Class 2 laser scanners use a low power , visible light diode. As with any very
bright light source, such as the sun, the user should avoid staring directly into
the light beam. Momentary exposure to a Class 2 laser is not known to be
harmful.
