Network Communications Set Up

The CRD2700-4200E cradle allows communication between terminals and their associated host computers connected to an Ethernet network. The CRD2700-42 00E mus t be connec ted to a n Ethernet network which is connected to the same network as the host computers, or an Ethernet network connected to the larger Internet via an Internet gateway. The cradle uses one of two configur ations to accomplish this: DHCP mode or Static mode.
8
Page 11
Quick Reference

DHCP Mode

1 DHCP Address Mode
When using DHCP mode, the cradle acquires it’s IP address dynamically from the DHCP server. There must be a DHCP server or a DHCP relay agent on the same subnet as the CRD27004200E with IP addresses , a gateway IP add ress, at least one DN S address, at least one WINS server address, a nd a subnet mask for the unit to be automatically configured. The cradle acquires one DHCP address from the DHCP server.
Network communications set up:
1. Ensure there is a DHCP server accessible to the CRD27004200E on the subnet.
2. Connect one end of a standard 10 Base-T network cable to the connector labelled Host on the back of the CRD27004200E. Connect the other end of the cable to a subnet hub.
3. Power up the cradle; the CRD2700-4200E performs a power-up sequence, then attempts to collect its network parameters from the DHCP server. While collecting network parameters, all LEDs flash green. Once configuration completes, all LEDs shut off.
If configuration of the unit from the DHCP server fails, all LEDs flash red. The unit retries the DHCP request every 10 minutes.
6 DHCP Address Mode
The 6 DHCP address mode is the cradle’s default mode. When using this mode, the cradle acquires 6 IP addresses dynamically from the DHCP server: one for the cradle, one for each of the 4 slots, and one for the expansion slot.
9
Page 12
CRD 2700-4200E
In this mode, each slot has its ow n IP address a nd may be dir ectly accessed by the network. On power-up, the 6 IP addresses are acquired. Periodically, the lease times are checked and renewed as required. If the renewal request is NAKed by the server, the cradle enters Panic mode and re-boots. If the cradle receives no response from the serv er and is un ab le to re -bind, it enters Panic mode and re-boots.
Caution: In 6 DHCP Address mode, the cradle must acquire 6
addresses from the DHCP server by requesting addresses with different requestor IDs. Some DHCP servers use the MAC address instead and with those cradles the cradle only receives one address and will not operate. This situation has occurred on some Novel servers. To remedy the situation, use static mode.
Cradle Configuration, DHCP Address Mode:
1. Start a Terminal Emulation session for the cradle: a. Connect the modular en d of cable (P/N 1 70013-000) and
a null modem adap ter betw een the e xpansio n port of the cradle and the COM port on a host computer.
b. Star t a termina l emulation s ession on th e host com puter .

Network Address Translation (NAPT)
In both DHCP and static mode, the cradle assigns private IP addresses to each terminal and performs Network Address Translation (NAPT) on all TCP/IP and UDP/IP packets as they transmit through the cradle between the outside network and the cradle’s private network. The terminals are assigned private addresses specified in options A-E in the Public network menu above.
The cradle modifies one IP addres s and port numb er pair in side a TCP/IP and UDP/IP packet header. Those packets going to the outside network have their source address translated to the IP address of the cradle and their source port changed to a unique port number associated with the cradle slot it came from. Conversely, packets designated to the cradle’s private network have their destinat ion IP ad dress an d po rt numb er mapped to the equivalent private network IP address and port number. The differences in the port numbers distinguish between packets for different slot s in the cradle. The bene fit of both IP address an d port translation is that mult iple sl ot s can simult an eousl y share the one network IP address of the cradle.
Accessing the outsi de network with the CRD2700-4200 E is not the same as a direct connection to the outside network. When using NAPT, many network services do not function at all. Since NAPT modifies addresses in TCP/IP and UDP/IP headers, it is

insufficient for network services that embed IP addresses inside packet data. Also, the CRD2700-4200E assumes that terminals sending data with one TCP or UDP so urce port expec ts to receive replies on the same port n umbe r, but some network services m ay reply with data o ver a ra nge of p ort s . Th es e ne tw ork se rvi ces a r e unusable with th e CRD2 700-42 00E. Als o, s ome serv ices l isten to incoming requests from the network. Since port numbers are usually fixed for a given service, no terminals can be set up as listeners.
Note: Turn off NAPT mode before using ActiveSync.

Configure for use with the SPT 1700/SPT1800 Terminal

The cradle must be pr operly confi gured for us e with t he SPT1 700 terminal. The configuration steps include:
Creating a CRD2700-4200E Mod em Sync Se rvice on page 17
• SPT 1700/SPT1800 Terminal Configuration (refer to the
SPT1700 PRG)
• Configuring the host PC for the CRD2700-4200E cradle and
for the SPT 1700/SPT1800 (refer to the SPT 1700/SPT1800 PRGs).

Creating a CRD2700-4200E Modem Sync Service

The SPT 1700/SPT1800 terminal communicates with the CRD2700-4200E via a Modem Sync. The Modem Sync offers many options which must be configured for use with the CRD2700-4200E.
Create a separate CRD2700-4200E network configuration and select it as the d efa ult Mo dem Sy nc se rvi ce . Use ei the r Gra f f iti or the keyboard feature (click in the lower left-hand corner of the scratch pad on the abc to access the keyboard) to enter the information.

Page 20
CRD 2700-4200E
1. Select the HotSync application from the main application screen.
2. Choose the Select Servi ce box under th e Mode m Sync ic on to create a new CRD2700-4200E service.
3. Select the Earthlink service, click Menu->Duplicate.
4. Change the service name to CRD2700-4200E. Leave the user name and password blank. Choose the Direct Serial Connection option.
Note: The default Palm baud rate for the cradle is 57600
baud.

The HotSync Process

Prior to performing HotSync confirm that:
Modem Sync Service has been created
CRD2700-4200E is properly connec ted /configured
Network HotSync mode is enabled on the host PC
The terminal has been HotSync’d with the host PC at least once using a directly connected serial cradle
SPT 1700/SPT1800 Terminal has been configured (refer to the SPT 1700/SPT1800 PRGs)
Host PC has been configured for the SPT 1700/SPT1800 Terminal Configuration (refer to the SPT 1700/SPT180 0 PRGs)
Insert a terminal in the cradle to automatically HotSync the terminal. All local slots in the cradle are capable of operating simultaneously.
18
Page 21
Quick Reference
If multiple slots are to be HotSync’d simultaneously, each must communicate with a different host PC. If the application requires simultaneous connection to a single host database, additional software, available from Symbol, is required.
Terminals inserted into daisy-chained cradles are HotSync’d in a round-robin fashion sim ult a ne ous ly with any HotSy nc s from loc al slots. Daisy-chained cradles share a logical “fifth slot” on the CRD2700-4200E, which, while it shares equal priority with the local slots, allows only one HotSync at a time.
Performing HotSync
Insert the SPT 1700/SPT1800 terminal into a local cradle slot, or a slot on an interconnected serial cradle to initiate communication between the terminal and the host. The cradle slot’s LED turns red, then flashes green, indicating that the host and terminal are communicating (when the terminal has been properly i ns erte d). Do n ot remove the terminal from the cradle while the LED is flashing green, this disrupts communication and data may be lost. If the terminal is inserted into an interconnected serial cradle slot whil e anoth er termi nal on the serial cradle chain is communicating with a host, the terminal waits (its LED remains red) until the first terminal finishes communicating, then the slot’s LED turns green until the terminal is removed from the s lot. To remove the terminal, pu ll it straight u p from the cradle slot.

Configure for use with the PPT 2700/PPT2800 Terminal

The cradle can be used to synchronize the PPT 2700/PPT2800 using either Active Sync. Active Sync only allows one terminal to connect to a host at a time. eConnect is a required control panel applet that is installed in the terminal, and allows Active Sync or any custom synchronization application to be launched when the terminal is inserted into the cradle. eConn ect can al so be set up to start a TCP/IP connection with the cradle, allowing any IP-based application to communicate through the cradle.
When the PPT 2700/PP T2800 terminals are in serted in the cradle, the cradle appears to be a direct-connect PPP service.
The cradle must be pro perly confi gured for use w ith the PPT 2700/ PPT2800 terminal. The configuration steps include:
Configuring the CRD2700-4200E cradle for the PPT 2700/ PPT2800
PPT 2700/PPT280 0 T erminal Co nfiguration (refer to the PPT 2700/PPT2800 PRGs)
Configuring the hos t PC for t he CRD 2700-4200E c radle an d for the PPT 2700 /PPT280 0 (refer to the PP T 2700/PP T2800 PRGs).

The ActiveSync Process

Prior to performing ActiveSync confirm that:
CRD2700-4200E is properly connec ted /configured
ActiveSync Service has been installed on the host PC with network mode enabled
The terminal has been ActiveSync’d with the host PC at least once using a directly connected serial cradle
eConnect is installed and configured on the terminal
20
Page 23
Quick Reference
A partnership has been established between the host PC and the terminal by performing an ActiveSync with the host PC using a directly connected serial cradle.
Once the CRD2700-4200E is properly connected, data communication betwee n the PPT 2700/PPT 2800 terminal and the host computer can take place.
Note: NAPT mode must be off for Active Sync to function.
Insert a terminal into the cradle or a slot on an interconnected serial cradle. This initiates the communication between the terminal and the host to automatically ActiveSync the terminal. All local sl ots in the cradle operate simultaneously.
The cradle slot’s LED turns red, then flashes green, indicating that the host and terminal are communicating (when the terminal has been properly inserted). Do not remove the terminal from the cradle while the LED is flashing green, this disrupts communication and data may be lost.
If the terminal is inserted into an interconnected serial cradle slot while another terminal on the serial cradle chain is commun icating with a host, the terminal waits (its LED remains red) until the first terminal finishes communicating, then the slot’s LED turns green until the terminal is remo ved from the slot. To remove the terminal, pull it straight up from the cradle slot.
