About Patch Management Solution for Mac
Patch Management Solution for Mac lets you scan Mac computers for the updates that they require. The solution then reports on the findingsand lets you automate the downloading and distribution of needed software updates. You can distribute all or some of the updates.
Patch Management Solution for Mac can updateonly the software that is supported by the Mac OS X Software Update utility. The solution integrates with the Software Update utility, and lets you collect needed updates information from the target Mac computers and initiate software update. Mac computers download software updates from Apple and report installation status to Notification Server.
Patch Management Solution for Mac provides you with the pre-configured rollout jobs that let you automate installing a large number of updates. For example, the pre-configured rollout jobs can install all updates, all recommended updates, and so on.

You install Patch Management Solution for Mac through Symantec Installation Manager as part of the AltirisClient Management Suite or AltirisServer Management Suite installation.
You can also install Patch Management Solution for Mac separately from other suite components.

To install Patch Management Solution for Mac
1
Do one of the following:
Download and run the Altiris Client Management Suite or Altiris Server
Management Suite installation file from the Symantec Web site (www.symatec.com).
If you already have Symantec Installation Manager installed, click Start
> All Programs > Altiris > Symantec Installation Manager > Symantec Installation Manager.

In Symantec Installation Manager, click Install New Products.

In the Filter by box, click None.

In the list of available products, select Altiris Patch Management for Mac.

Follow the installation wizard through to completion.
Licensing
Each Symantec product comes with a 7-day trial license that is installed by default. You can register and obtain a 30-day evaluation license through our Web site at
www.altiris.com or purchase a full product license.
Use Symantec Installation Manager to install licenses.

Checking for available software updates

Checking for available software updates
You can check target Mac computers for the software updates that they require. When you run the Check Available Updates Task, the target Mac computers download software updates information from Apple and then report the list of available updates to Notification Server.
To ensure that the list of available software updates on Notification Server is kept up to date, the task is pre-configured to run twice a week. The task is configured to run on the All Patchable Mac Computers target.
If you want to quickly check Mac computers for compliance, you can run the task immediately.
After you collect software update information from Mac computer, you can view this information in reports.

To check for available software updates immediately

In the Symantec Management Console, on the Manage menu, click Jobs and Tasks.

In the left pane, click Jobs and Tasks > System Jobs and Tasks > Software > Patch Management > Mac > Check Available Updates Task.

Under Task Status, right-click Run Check Available Updates Task on Schedule, and then click Start Now.
Viewing the list of available software updates
You can view the list of available software updates in the Available Mac Software Updates report. The report also shows the number of computers that require an
update.
In reports, you can drill down on specific items to obtain additional information.
To populate the report, collect the available software updates inventory.

With Patch Management Solution for Mac you can use the following methods of installing software updates:

Installing individual software updates
You can install individual software updates directly from reports.
Before you can install updates, you must collect available software updates inventory.
See “Checking for available software updates” on page 17.
To install software updates, you create a software update rollout job. You can view the rollout jobs and their status at Manage > Jobs and Tasks > System Jobs and Tasks > Software > Patch Management > Mac > Rollout Jobs.

To install individual software updates

In the Symantec Management Console, on the Reports menu, click All Reports.

In the left pane, click Reports > Software > Patch Management > Mac > Available Mac Software Updates.

Click the updates that you want to install.
To highlight multiple items, hold down the Ctrl or Shift key.

Right-click the updates that you want to install and then click Create Rollout Job.

(Optional) In the dialog box that opens, modify the name and the description of the rollout job that you just created.

Under Task Status, click New Schedule.

In the New Schedule dialog box, configure a schedule for this software update rollout job.
For example, click Now.

Under Input, click Add > Target.

In the Add Target dialog box, click Open.

In the Open dialog box, click AllPatchable Mac Computers Target and then click OK.
It is safe to run the rollout job on all supported Mac computers. When the rollout job runs, it checks if the update that you want to install is needed. If the update is not needed, the job does not download and does not install the update.

Click OK.

Installing all updates
Patch Management Solution for Mac also provides you with automated rollout jobs that let you install all software updates that match a specific criteria. For example, you can choose to install all available updates, all recommended updates, all updates that do not require a restart, and so on.

To ensure that Mac computers in your environment are always up to date, you can configure automated rollout jobs to run on a schedule. For example, you can configure the jobs to run weekly.

To install all updates

In the Symantec Management Console, on the Manage menu, click Jobs and Tasks.

In the left pane, click Jobs and Tasks > System Jobs and Tasks > Software > Patch Management > Mac > Automated Rollout Jobs.

Click the rollout job that you want to run.

In the right pane, under Task Status, click New Schedule.
