Setting up Data Encryption (WEP) in the Access Point
It is advisable to use a secure wireless connection by making use of an encoded encryption. If you refrain from doing this, malicious users will be able to log on to your network for free using a laptop + wireless PC Card + software. This cannot be prevented by using a firewall.
Select the Encryption option in the main menu of the Access Point.
The following screen will appear:
example1: In this example the 64 bit WEP encryption has been configured with key number1: 1020304050.

Configuring the Wireless Access Point
In order to connect to the Access Point your network card must be put within the same range as the Access Point. Connecting is done with a standard patch cable. Because the AP works on the 192.168.2.1 IP address, you must put your network card on an IP address within this range (e.g. with the IP address 192.168.2.101). Enter 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask. You do not need to enter the other values of your network card.
Search for the Access Point using your Internet Browser (e.g. Internet Explorer) by entering the IP Number of the Access Point (192.168.2.1). You will be prompted for the username= admin and password= 1234. After logging on you will be able to view the home page.
Configuring the Access Point for wireless connections
After you have logged on to the router, select the “Wireless Setting” option.

Then click on the button to save the data in the Access Point. Your Access Point will now only send encoded signals to wireless stations. NB: After configuring WEP in the Access Point, do not forget to enter the same key in the wireless client or you will not be able to connect.
Setting up MAC Filtering
In addition to the WEP encryption security for your wireless connection, it is advisable to include the use of MAC Filtering. When correctly set up, MAC Filtering ensures that only network cards with the MAC address specified by you will be given access to your Access Point. To find the MAC address of your wireless card, follow this simple method:
Windows 98/SE
Go to Start -> Run and enter the command winipcfg followed by enter. The “IP Configuration” screen will appear. Select the wireless adapter and click the 'More Settings' button. The adapter address is the MAC address of this particular (wireless) network card.
example ‘winipcfg’ for finding the MAC address
Windows 2000/XP
Go to Start -> Run and enter the command cmd followed by enter. A black MS-DOS window will appear. Enter the command ipconfig /all followed by enter. The physical address of your wireless card is the MAC address we are searching for.
Once we have found the MAC address (for example 00-50-DA-66-AC-A7), it must be added to the Access Point as a secure connection.
Select “MAC-Filtering” from the main menu of the Access Point
The following screen will appear. Select the “Enable Wireless Access Control” box and enter the MAC address together with a description of the PC.
Then click “Add” and the Mac address will be added to the list of allowed connections:
Tick the “Select” box to activate the Mac address of the relevant PC.
