Preface
About This Manual
This manual is written for professional system integrators and PC technicians. It
provides information for the installation and use of the SC818G 1U chassis. Instal-
lation and maintenance should be performed by experienced technicians only.
Supermicro's SC818 1U chassis features a unique and highly-optimized design for
quad-processor platforms. The chassis is equipped with a 1400W power supply to
support high-performance system components and eight high-speed heavy duty
counter-rotating fans for optimal cooling. Quick release slide rails also available for
HPC and datacenter use.
This document lists compatible parts available when this document was published.

Chapter 1
Introduction
1-1 Overview
Supermicro’s SC818G 1U chassis features a unique and highly-optimized design.
The chassis is equipped with high efciency power supply. High performance fans
provide ample optimized cooling for FB-DIMM memory modules and 4 hot-swap
drive bays offer maximum storage capacity in a 1U form factor.

1-3 Chassis Features
The SC818G 1U high-performance chassis includes the following features:
CPU
The SC818G chassis supports a DP or UP Dual-core Xeon processor. Please refer
to the motherboard specications pages on our website for updates on supported
processors.
Hard Drives
The SC818G chassis features three drive bays for SAS/SATA drives. These drives
are hot-swappable. Once setup correctly, these drives can be removed without
powering down the server. In addition, these drives support SES2 (SAS/SATA).
I/O Expansion slots
Each SC818G chassis includes four full-height, full-length expansion slots or two
double-width high-end graphics cards (GPU), plus one low-prole expansion slot or
one double-width high-end graphics card, (with twin motherboards).
Peripheral Drives
Each SC818G chassis supports one slim DVD-ROM drive (optional) and one slim
Floppy drive (optional). These drives allow you to quickly install or save data.
Other Features
Other onboard features are included to promote system health. These include eight
cooling fans, a convenient power switch, a reset button, and LED indicators.

1-5 Returning Merchandise for Service
A receipt or copy of your invoice marked with the date of purchase is required be-
fore any warranty service will be rendered. You can obtain service by calling your
vendor for a Returned Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number. When returning
to the manufacturer, the RMA number should be prominently displayed on the
outside of the shipping carton, and mailed prepaid or hand-carried. Shipping and
handling charges will be applied for all orders that must be mailed when service
is complete.
For faster service, RMA authorizations may be requested online (http://www.
supermicro.com/support/rma/).
Whenever possible, repack the chassis in the original Supermicro carton, using the
original packaging material. If these are no longer available, be sure to pack the
chassis securely, using packaging material to surround the chassis so that it does
not shift within the carton and become damaged during shipping.
This warranty only covers normal consumer use and does not cover damages in-
curred in shipping or from failure due to the alteration, misuse, abuse or improper
maintenance of products.
During the warranty period, contact your distributor rst for any product problems.

System Safety
2-1 Overview
This chapter provides a quick setup checklist to get your chassis up and running.
Following the steps in order given should enable you to have your chassis setup and
operational within a minimal amount of time. This quick set up assumes that you are
an experienced technician, familiar with common concepts and terminology.
2-2 Warnings and Precautions
You should inspect the box the chassis was shipped in and note if it was damaged
in any way. If the chassis itself shows damage, le a damage claim with carrier
who delivered your system.
Decide on a suitable location for the rack unit that will hold that chassis. It should
be situated in a clean, dust-free area that is well ventilated. Avoid areas where heat,
electrical noise and electromagnetic elds are generated.
You will also need it placed near at least one grounded power outlet. When cong-
ured, the SC818G chassis includes one power supply.
2-3 Preparing for Setup
The SC818G chassis includes a set of rail assemblies, including mounting brackets
and mounting screws you will need to install the systems into the rack. Please read
this manual in its entirety before you begin the installation procedure.
2-4 Electrical Safety Precautions
Basic electrical safety precautions should be followed to protect yourself from harm
and the SC818G from damage:
Be aware of the locations of the power on/off switch on the chassis as well •
as the room’s emergency power-off switch, disconnection switch or electrical
outlet. If an electrical accident occurs, you can then quickly remove power from
the system.
Do not work alone when working with high voltage components.•

Power should always be disconnected from the system when removing or in-•
stalling main system components, such as the serverboard, memory modules
and the DVD-ROM and oppy drives (not necessary for hot swappable drives).
When disconnecting power, you should rst power down the system with the
operating system and then unplug the power cords from all the power supply
modules in the system.
When working around exposed electrical circuits, another person who is fa-•
miliar with the power-off controls should be nearby to switch off the power, if
necessary.
Use only one hand when working with powered-on electrical equipment. This •
is to avoid making a complete circuit, which will cause electrical shock. Use
extreme caution when using metal tools, which can easily damage any electrical
components or circuit boards they come into contact with.
Do not use mats designed to decrease electrostatic discharge as protection from •
electrical shock. Instead, use rubber mats that have been specically designed
as electrical insulators.
The power supply power cord must include a grounding plug and must be •
plugged into grounded electrical outlets.
Serverboard battery: CAUTION - There is a danger of explosion if the onboard •
battery is installed upside down, which will reverse its polarities This battery
must be replaced only with the same or an equivalent type recommended by
the manufacturer. Dispose of used batteries according to the manufacturer’s
instructions.
DVD-ROM laser: CAUTION - this server may have come equipped with a •
DVD-ROM drive. To prevent direct exposure to the laser beam and hazardous
radiation exposure, do not open the enclosure or use the unit in any uncon-
ventional way.

Keep the area around the chassis clean and free of clutter.•
Place the chassis top cover and any system components that have been re-•
moved away from the system or on a table so that they won’t accidentally be
stepped on.

While working on the system, do not wear loose clothing such as neckties and •
unbuttoned shirt sleeves, which can come into contact with electrical circuits or
be pulled into a cooling fan.
Remove any jewelry or metal objects from your body, which are excellent metal •
conductors that can create short circuits and harm you if they come into contact
with printed circuit boards or areas where power is present.
After accessing the inside of the system, close the system back up and secure •
it to the rack unit with the retention screws after ensuring that all connections
have been made.
2-6 System Safety
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is generated by two objects with different electrical
charges coming into contact with each other. An electrical discharge is created to
neutralize this difference, which can damage electronic components and printed
circuit boards. The following measures are generally sufcient to neutralize this
difference before contact is made to protect your equipment from ESD:
Do not use mats designed to decrease electrostatic discharge as protection from •
electrical shock. Instead, use rubber mats that have been specically designed
as electrical insulators.
Use a grounded wrist strap designed to prevent static discharge.•
Keep all components and printed circuit boards (PCBs) in their antistatic bags •
until ready for use.
Touch a grounded metal object before removing any board from its antistatic •
bag.
Do not let components or PCBs come into contact with your clothing, which may •
retain a charge even if you are wearing a wrist strap.
Handle the backplane by its edges only; do not touch its components, peripheral •
chips, memory modules or contacts.
When handling chips or modules, avoid touching their pins.•
Put the serverboard and peripherals back into their antistatic bags when not •
in use.

For grounding purposes, make sure your computer chassis provides excellent •
conductivity between the power supply, the case, the mounting fasteners and
the serverboard.

3-1 Overview
This chapter describes the most common components included with your chassis.
Some components listed may not be included or compatible with your particular
chassis model. For more information, see the installation instructions detailed later
in this manual.
3-2 Components
Chassis
The SC818G chassis includes three 3.5" hard drive bays and options for peripheral
drives. For the latest options, visit our Web site at: http://www.supermicro.com.
This chassis accepts a 1U backplane, up to eight fans and a power supply. SC818G
models come in black.
Backplane
Each SC818G chassis comes with a 1U backplane. The backplane will accept SAS/
SATA. For more information regarding compatible backplanes, view the appendices
found at the end of this manual. In addition, visit our Web site for the latest informa-

Fans
The SC818G chassis accepts up to eight system fans. System fans for SC818G
chassis are powered from the serverboard. These fans are 1U high and are powered
by 4-pin connectors.
Rack Mounting
The SC818G can be placed in a rack for secure storage and use. To install the
chassis in a rack, follow the step-by-step instructions included in this manual.

Power Supply
Each SC818G chassis model includes a high-efciency power supply rated at 1400
Watts. In the unlikely event the power supply fails, replacement is simple and can
be done without tools.
Air Shroud
Air shrouds are funnel air directly to where it is needed. Always use the air shroud
included with your chassis.

Though not frequently, you may need replacement parts for your system. To en-
sure the highest level of professional service and technical support, we strongly
recommend purchasing exclusively from our Supermicro Authorized Distributors /

System Interface
4-1 Overview
There are several LEDs on the control panel and on the drive carriers that provide
system and component status. This chapter explains the meanings of the LED
indicators and the appropriate responses that need to be taken.

Power: The main power switch is used to apply or remove power from the power •
supply to the server system. Turning off system power with this button removes
the main power but keeps standby power supplied to the system. Therefore,
you must unplug system before servicing.
4-3 Control Panel LEDs
The control panel located on the front of the SC818G chassis has ve LEDs. These
LEDs provide critical information related to different parts of the system. This sec-
tion explains what each LED indicates when illuminated and any action that may
be required.
Reset: The reset button is used to reboot the system.•
4-2 Control Panel Buttons
The SC818G chassis includes two or three push-buttons located on the front panel:
a reset button and a power on/off button.
Universal Information LED: The Universal Information LED is used to indated •
fan failure, power failure, overheat condition, or to identify the unit within a large
rack installation. The feature requires a motherboard that supports the Universal
Information LED.
When this LED blinks red quickly, it indicates a fan failure and when blinking red
slowly a power failure. This LED will be blue when used for UID (Unit Identier).
When on continuously red, it indicates an overheat condition, which may be caused
by cables obstructing the airow in the system or the ambient room temperature
being too warm. See the table below for descriptions of the LED states.

Note: Deactivating the UID LED must be performed in the same way it was acti-
vated. (If the UID LED was activated via IPMI, you can only turn the LED off via
IPMI and not with the UID button.)
Power: Indicates power is being supplied to the system's power supply units. •
This LED should normally be illuminated when the system is operating.
HDD: Indicates IDE channel activity, SAS/SATA drive, and/or peripheral drive •
activity when ashing.
NIC1: Indicates network activity on GLAN1 when ashing.•
NIC2: Indicates network activity on GLAN2 when ashing.•

4-4 Drive Carrier LEDs
Your chassis uses SAS/SATA drives.
SAS/SATA Drives
Each SAS/SATA drive carrier has two LEDs.
Green: Each Serial ATA drive carrier has a green LED. When illuminated, this •
green LED (on the front of the SATA drive carrier) indicates drive activity. A
connection to the SATA backplane enables this LED to blink on and off when
that particular drive is being accessed.
Red: The red LED to indicate an SAS/SATA drive failure. If one of the SAS/SATA •
drives fail, you should be notied by your system management software.

Overheat Temperature Setting
Some backplanes allow the overheat temperature to be set at 45º, 50º, or 55º by
changing a jumper setting. For more information, see the appendices at the back of
this manual or download the backplane user guide at www.supermicro.com.
Overheating Condition
If the Server Overheats, do the Following:
Determine the nature of the overheating condition as described in the Control 1.
Panel LEDs section of this manual.
Conrm that the chassis covers are installed properly.2.
Check the routing of the cables and make sure all fans are present and oper-3.
ating normally.

Removing the Chassis Cover:
Remove the three screws securing the top cover to the chassis.1.
Press both of the release tabs at the same time to release the cover 2.
Slide the cover toward the rear of the chassis.3.
Lift the cover up and off of the chassis.4.
Warning: Except for short periods of time, do NOT operate the chassis without the cover in place. The chassis cover must be
inplacetoallowproperairowandpreventoverheating.

Removing Hard Drive Carriers from the Chassis
1. Press the release button on the drive carrier. This extends the drive carrier
handle.
2. Use the handle to pull the drive carrier out of the chassis.

The drives are mounted in drive carriers to simplify their installation and removal

cluding a 2.5" hard disk drive, DVD-ROM or oppy drive. For a complete listing of

Installing or Replacing a Peripheral Drive
Unplug the main power cord to the chassis.1.
Unplug the power and data cables from the motherboard and/or backplane. 2.
If you are adding a new drive: Remove the dummy tray from the drive bay 3.
The mini-bezel can be removed by pulling out the hard drive beneath the
drive bay, then pulling the mini-bezel forward.
If you are replacing a drive: Locate the locking tab at the rear (left hand side
when viewed from the front) of the peripheral drive. Push the tab toward the
drive and push the drive unit out the front of the chassis.
Re-use the side rails or install the side rails onto the peripheral drive4.
Insert the new drive unit in the slot until the tab locks in place.5.
Reconnect the data and power cables.6.
Replace the chassis cover (replace the server in the rack, if necessary) and 7.
power up the system.

Standoffs
Permanent and Optional Standoffs
Standoffs prevent short circuits by securing space between the motherboard and
the chassis surface. The SC818G chassis includes permanent standoffs in loca-
tions used by most motherboards. These standoffs accept the rounded Phillips head
screws included in the SC818G accessories packaging.
Some motherboard require additional screws for heatsinks, general components
and/or non-standard security. Optional standoffs are included to these mother-
boards. To use an optional standoff, you must place the hexagonal screw through
the bottom of the chassis and secure the screw with the hexagon nut (rounded
side up).

Motherboard Installation
Installing the Motherboard
Review the documentation that came with your motherboard. Become familiar 1.
with component placement, requirements, and precautions.
Disconnect the power supply and lay the chassis on a at surface.2.
As required by your motherboard, install standoffs in any areas that do not 3.
have a permanent standoff. To do this:
A. Place a hexagonal standoff screw through the bottom the chassis.
B. Secure the screw with the hexagon nut (rounded side up).
Lay the motherboard on the chassis aligning the permanent and optional 4.
standoffs
Secure the motherboard to the chassis using the rounded, Phillips head 5.
screws. Do not exceed eight pounds of torque when tightening down the
motherboard.
Secure the CPU(s), heatsinks, and other components to the motherboard, 6.
chassis, and/or backplane as needed.
Note: Both the top cover and the oor of the chassis are designed with an optional
air ventilation grating, should additional air intake be required. To utilize the air
grating, Peel back the mylar lm covering the grating on the top cover, and or the
oor of the chassis.

Eight heavy-duty fans provide cooling for the chassis. These fans circulate air
through the chassis as a means of lowering the chassis' internal temperature.
The chassis includes counter-rotating fans. Each fan unit is actually made up of two
fans joined back-to-back, which rotate in opposite directions. This counter-rotating
action generates exceptional airow and works to dampen vibration levels.
Fan Numbering in the BIOS
In the unlikely event of a fan failure, the failed system fan can be identied through
the BIOS, by utilizing the fan numbering system shown below. These numbers are
also imprinted on the oor of the chassis.

optional additional fan tray, should additional cooling be required.
Adding an Additional System Fan Tray
Turn off the power to the system and unplug the system from the outlet.1.
Place the additional fan tray into the vacant space in the the chassis, aligning 2.
the mounting holes in the fan tray with the mounting holes in the oor of the
chassis and aligning the fan tray so that it is facing in the the opposite direc-
tion from the fan beside it. These trays hook together and must be connected
in alternating directions in order to t within the chassis.
Connect the fan wires to the fan headers.3.
Power up the system and check that the fan is working properly before re-4.

Replacing a System Fan
If the BIOS is not being utilized to determine which fan has failed, open the 1.
top cover of the chassis while the system is running to locate the position of
the failed fan. Never run the server for an extended period of time with the
top cover open.
Turn off the power to the system and unplug the system from the outlet.2.
Remove the failed fan's power cord from the backplane.3.
Remove the four pins securing the fan to the fan tray. 4.
Lift the failed fan from the fan tray and out of the chassis.5.
Place the new fan into the vacant space in the fan tray, while making sure the 6.
arrows on the top of the fan (indicating air direction) point in the same direc-
tion as the arrows on the other fans in the same fan tray.
Reconnect the fan wires to the exact same chassis fan headers as the previ-7.
ous fan.
Power up the system and check that the fan is working properly before re-8.

The SC818G chassis includes a 1400 Watt power supply. This power supply is
auto-switching capable. The power supply automatically sense and operates at a
100v to 240v input voltage.
Power Supply Replacement
If the power supply unit fails, the system will shut down and you will need to replace
the unit. Replacement units can be ordered directly from Supermicro (see contact
information in the Preface). As there is only one power supply unit in the SC818G
chassis, power must be completely removed from the server before removing and
replacing the power supply unit.

6-1 Overview
This chapter provides a quick setup checklist to get your chassis up and running.
Following these steps in the order given should enable you to have the system
operational within a minimum amount of time.
6-2 Unpacking the System
You should inspect the box the chassis was shipped in and note if it was damaged
in any way. If the chassis itself shows damage you should le a damage claim with
the carrier who delivered it.
Decide on a suitable location for the rack unit that will hold your chassis. It should
be situated in a clean, dust-free area that is well ventilated. Avoid areas where
heat, electrical noise and electromagnetic elds are generated. You will also need
it placed near a grounded power outlet. Be sure to read the Rack and Server
Precautions in the next section.
6-3 Preparing for Setup
The box your chassis was shipped in should include two sets of rail assemblies,
two rail mounting brackets and the mounting screws you will need to install the
system into the rack. Please read this section in its entirety before you begin the
installation procedure outlined in the sections that follow.
Choosing a Setup Location
Leave enough clearance in front of the rack to enable you to open the front •
door completely (~25 inches).
Leave approximately 30 inches of clearance in the back of the rack to allow for •
sufcient airow and ease in servicing.
This product is for installation only in a Restricted Access Location (dedicated •
equipment rooms, service closets and the like).

Rack Precautions
Ensure that the leveling jacks on the bottom of the rack are fully extended to •
the oor with the full weight of the rack resting on them.
In single rack installation, stabilizers should be attached to the rack.•
In multiple rack installations, the racks should be coupled together.•
Always make sure the rack is stable before extending a component from the •
rack.
You should extend only one component at a time - extending two or more si-•
multaneously may cause the rack to become unstable.
General Server Precautions
Review the electrical and general safety precautions that came with the com-•
ponents you are adding to your chassis.
Determine the placement of each component in the rack • before you install the
rails.
Install the heaviest server components on the bottom of the rack rst, and then •
work up.
Use a regulating uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to protect the server from •
power surges, voltage spikes and to keep your system operating in case of a
power failure.
Allow the hot plug hard drives and power supply modules to cool before touch-•
ing them.
Always keep the rack's front door and all panels and components on the servers •
closed when not servicing to maintain proper cooling.

Rack Mounting Considerations
Ambient Operating Temperature
If installed in a closed or multi-unit rack assembly, the ambient operating tempera-
ture of the rack environment may be greater than the ambient temperature of the
room. Therefore, consideration should be given to installing the equipment in an
environment compatible with the manufacturer’s maximum rated ambient tempera-
ture (TMRA).
ReducedAirow
Equipment should be mounted into a rack so that the amount of airow required
for safe operation is not compromised.
Mechanical Loading
Equipment should be mounted into a rack so that a hazardous condition does not
arise due to uneven mechanical loading.
Circuit Overloading
Consideration should be given to the connection of the equipment to the power
supply circuitry and the effect that any possible overloading of circuits might have
on overcurrent protection and power supply wiring. Appropriate consideration of
equipment nameplate ratings should be used when addressing this concern.
Reliable Ground
A reliable ground must be maintained at all times. To ensure this, the rack itself
should be grounded. Particular attention should be given to power supply connec-
tions other than the direct connections to the branch circuit (i.e. the use of power
strips, etc.).

6-4 Rack Mounting Instructions
This section provides information on installing the SC818G chassis into a rack unit
with the quick-release rails provided. There are a variety of rack units on the market,
which may mean that the assembly procedure will differ slightly. You should also
refer to the installation instructions that came with the rack unit you are using.
NOTE: This rail will t a rack between 26" and 33.5" deep.
Identifying the Sections of the Rack Rails
The chassis package includes two quick-release rail assemblies in the rack mounting
kit. Each assembly consists of two primary sections: an inner xed chassis rail and
inner rail extention that secure directly to the chassis, and an outer rail assembly
that secures directly to the rack itself.

Installing the Inner Rail Extensions
The SC818G chassis includes a set of inner rails in two sections: inner rails (A)
and inner rail extensions (B), which are attached to the chassis. The inner rails are
preattached and do not interfere with normal use of the chassis if you decide not
to use a server rack. Attach the inner rail extensions stabilize the chassis within
the rack.
Installing the Inner Rail Extensions
Place the inner rail extensions (B) over the preattached inner rails (A) which 1.
are attached to the side of the chassis. Align the hooks of the inner rail with
the rail extension holes. Make sure the extension faces "outward" just like the
inner rail.
Slide the extension toward the front of the chassis.2.
Secure the chassis with screws as illustrated.3.

6-5 Installing the Server into a Telco Rack
To install the chassis into a Telco (post) type rack, use two L-shaped brackets (Op-
tional with the MCP-290-00016-0N) on either side of the chassis (four total). First,
determine how far follow the chassis will extend out the front of the rack. Larger
chassis should be positioned to balance the weight between front and back. If a
bezel is included on your chassis, remove it. Then attach the two front brackets to
each side of the chassis, then the two rear brackets positioned with just enough
space to accommodate the width of the Telco rack. Finish by sliding the chassis
into the rack and tightening the brackets to the rack.

listed below when accessing your system or handling the components.
C-1 ESD Safety Guidelines
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) can damage electronic com ponents. To prevent dam
-
age to your system, it is important to handle it very carefully. The following measures
are generally sufcient to protect your equipment from ESD.
Use a grounded wrist strap designed to prevent static discharge.•
Touch a grounded metal object before removing a component from the antistatic •
bag.
Handle the RAID card by its edges only; do not touch its components, peripheral •
chips, memory modules or gold contacts.
When handling chips or modules, avoid touching their pins.•
Put the card and peripherals back into their antistatic bags when not in use.•

is used to indicate the activity status of
each hard drive. The Activity LED Header
is located on the rear of the front panel. For
the Activity LED Header to work properly,

Explanation of Jumpers
To modify the operation of the backplane,
jumpers can be used to choose between
optional settings. Jumpers create shorts
between two pins to change the function
of the connector. Pin 1 is identied with
a square solder pad on the printed circuit
board.
Note: On two pin jumpers, "Closed" means
the jumper is on and "Open" means the
jumper is off the pins.
